Exclamation How can I prevent Ayurvedic herbs from darkening hair?

Hey guys I am new herehttp://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/images/smilies/wave.gif I have been natural for almost three years and I am just now starting to really work on getting healthier hair (what a shame I know) I was wondering if you guys could help me though I am planning on using 1.Amla (oil or powder idk yet but I hear they both can darken hair) 2.Maka 3.Neem 4.Hibiscus 5.Shakaika 6.Arutha (Reetha) 7.Brahmi powders but I don't want to at all change the natural color of my hair (darken) I read somewhere that mixing with oil I think prevents any darkening but that was with the use of henna so I don't know if it will work with these herbs but if you guys have any idea I would love to hear it thanks in advance

Hi, and welcome!

I'm not sure how to prevent darkening and if oil works in preventing it, but just wanted to say I do an amla/brahmi/maka paste at least once every month (sometimes as often as once a week) and though I've experienced a slight darkening, it hasn't been like I've used a hair dye or indigo on my hair, its just been a deepening/strengthening of my natural colour, if that makes sense. Also it was a gradual thing, and I wouldn't say it was that noticeable. I do use oil in my pastes though, so maybe this is the reason why? I'm not sure- maybe others will have some insight, but you might also find it worth checking out and asking on the Ayurvedic spin-off threads on the 4a forum.

No, the results of ayurvedic treatments are supposed to build up over time. Several of the herbs you mention are supposed to prevent graying of / promote dark and shiny hair.

I've been using the ayurvedic powders and oils strictly for the past 3 weeks and prior to that I colored my hair back in late september. I have not noticed a darkening of my hair at all. If anything my hair is a lot shinier and highly moisturized. The only ayurvedic powder that I think will really darken your hair is Indigo.

If anything I think that my hair color is more vibrant because people are just now noticing I even had color. There are some pics at my blog Beyond the Kink or you can check out my youtube channel beyondthekink and look at my hair color but they don't darken at all.

The effects of ayurvedic herbs are meant to build up over time. Depending on the strength of your treatments and what herbs / combination you use, it will likely take more then three weeks to see the results.
