Twa too thick for eco styler gel, perhaps?
After my last post of wanting hang time, I decided to take out my braids. I tried a wash and go about an twenty minutes ago (when I had short hair like, 1 month my curls would work with with black gel,) and now I don't like the results!
I used ecostyler aloe vera on washed hair that I used a bit of leave in conditioner and oil.
Prior to washing I played with it, and putting a TON worked on a small section, HOWEVER... thats not a wash and go. So I first put a large amount in my hand, rubbed it in, and waited...
Maybe I didn't put enough? I think if I put more it would look like a big glob and rather gross. No tutorials I've seen use that much.
I even tried section by sectioning, and then added more eco, then I decided to add the left over of my curly custard, that helped a bit, but the shrinkage is beyond regular ridiculousness.
So.. I'm wondering, do I need something heavier? I've been natural a few times, and the first times I would use my pro style but as soon as my hair got any type of length, it was like "haha!" I wouldnt see any curls. So that is why I never opted to bother with wash n goes this turn around. I want something, and its starting to become warm, and although my twist outs are awesome, I like being able to just "wash and go."
I need some product advice.. Ugh..

Im a little confused and slightly high off these ( allergy)drugs so maybe its just me.
So are you looking for definition, hang time , or both? By you saying your hair is too thick for the ecostyler what do you mean? Is it not defining your hair , or is it not giving you the hangtime youre looking for?

Well I create different post because I am not always looking for the same thing. I don't think I can find one product for all, hence I made this. So I used the eco styler gel just to get some type of definition/style besides a freshly picked afro "shape" I guess you can call that defining. But yes, tried it and it did nothing for me. I was better off with nothing in my head.

Ok was your hair wet prior to the ecostyler, has it been washed , cowashed, or if youre into shampoo?
Was there a leave in prior , or did you go straight to the gel?

After deep co washing I added the gel to hair that was about 40 percent dry.

I would suggest using the level 10 krystal if you're not getting any definition. I know that some people who are 4b need the krystal which is level 10. That level is way too heavy and strong for my hair. I use either the blue which is level 5 or the pink that's level 7.
You should do a wng on wet not 40% dry hair for best results. You should check out some yt videos of naturals with 4a/4b which looks and sounds like your hair type. I know AfricanExport has a really good wng for type 4s who have a difficult time achieving definition.

I have dense hair (lots of hairs on scalp) and the post-TWA phase was hard for me too. Another thing i learned is that my hair curls only at the ends so when it was a very teeny TWA it looked curly or spiral-y but as it grew, it became bushier & less defined. (I can't count my last quasi "BC" from dreadlocks because I had too much new growth for it to behave the same way as a low cut. )
My hair has to be really wet to respond to conditioner & products well... also maybe over-manipulation might have affected your results because i know it ruins whatever pattern i have?
...Try wetting the already detangled & conditioned hair thoroughly and smoothing your product in immediately, gently with hands & fingers only? The brush and comb thing is weird for styling: it helps some hair to define and clump but over-separates other hair. Some parts of my hair actually have to recover it's kink and bit o' curl after detangling.
Also you'll probably have to use more condish and product in general than average density heads? (I'm checking your YT vid now. Beautiful hair!)
Ok, if I'm doing a WnG my steps might be:
Cowash and/or Detangle with Suave, Nature's Gate or Trader Joe's Nourish cond.
Rinse out the cowash/detangling condish
Apply more conditioner (Lustrasilk Shea Mango Cholesterol, Oyin Honey Hemp, TJ's mixed with EVOO), then let it rest under a baggie so my hair can kink & curl back up...For me, the longer it sits ~ the better. esp if I've used a brush or comb to detang.
Rinse most or half of that condish out with cool water
Gently add leave-in (Fekkai Shea, Shea Moisture or a home mix) and/or gel(Eco Styler Olive)
Some days after cowashing, I just leave it alone sans product and let it draw up. That's my CoWashGoShrink.

Wow, I didn't even know they made a 5! The olive oil one is way too heavy for my hair to use on the length (its OK for the edges). I will try to look for that one.

I'm a BRAND newbie to the wash and go, and thank you for all your info. I subscribe to a few of those. I tried to put some conditioner, only on the front and my curls showed, did it stay once dried, no. I heard how some people use conditioner alone to define, I have to recheck that post. I don't use more conditioner, and I will start doing that to see what would happen. I use to use cholesterol, and that made my curls show. I will try that baggie method before putting in product. Usually in the bath, I detangle and my hair is a poof, so your probably right about too much manipulation, so next time, after I detangle, I will add more conditioner to return my curls and see what happens. As far as gels, I think I'm done . I ordered a creme from Donna marie, so I will see. I think I will try creams, butters, custards, and serums for curl defining. Thanks a bunch .
