Protective styles that are edge/temple friendly?

I wear kinky twists as my primary protective style and I've seen great growth with it. However, it's wreaking havoc on my edges, no matter how loosely I twist and no matter how many times i re-twist the front. What's the use of having long hair when it looks like your hairline is receding?

I'd like to wear twists with my own hair, but I don't think my hair is long enough to look good in them (about 7-8 inches or so). I've tried making chunky twists and then throwing a wig on top for weeks at a time, but for some reason, this doesn't seem to help my hair (or edges) grow out.

I'm open to any suggestions you have.
My edges are looking quite thin these days. It actually on one side in one spot though, which is weird and I'm bothered by it. There's hair there but it's just not as thick as I remember it. I took out the twist extension that the spot is in to relieve tension on it. My hair is pretty short but I twisted that piece of hair and wrapped it loosely around a neighboring braid. I've been applying castor oil as much as I can remember so I'm working on a remedy myself. It could be the pony tails I wear. I'd wear it down but I did them really long (hip length) and I really didn't put much effort into them so the pony tails and buns hide the imperfections. When I do my new set over Spring Break I'm going to be neater with them and do them much shorter and I'll be able to wear them down more.

I think 7-8 inches (which is about shoulder length, right?) is a really good length for wearing twists. My favorite way to wear my own hair is in mini twists. I recently BC'd (more like a huge trim) but before I did my hair was around that length and I would wear my twists in my hair all the time. My hair is really short now so I prefer the extensions. You can pin them up, wear a half pony tail, head bands, and so many other styles.

I'm such a bun/ponypuff person, but sometimes my edges/hairline don't take them very well. So what I always do is, I part my hair from ear to ear, I make a bun or ponypuff or whatever behind the part, and then in front of the part, I twist, loose braid, roll-twist, etc. I just do a loose style with the front of my hair closest to my hairline. Keeping that front hair out of the bun really gives my edges and temple area a rest from any traction or stress. Hope that helped!

Here is an example of what I mean:

When my hair is in a bun, I deliberately leave out the "baby hair" and some tendrils on the sides, front and back to keep the tension away. I can always use aloe vera gel or a light hair gel to define it more. It also softens the look. HTH

Also wanted to add that all the styles are done sans extensions. I've had to come to grips with the fact that I am allergic to all types of extension hair (synthetic or human). My scalp reacts (violently) everytime I put them in. We're talking itchies like nobody's business, flaking, redness, scabs---the whole bit. NOT FUN.

So, I've had to get really creative with styling my hair at it's current length even though it's not really that long yet. Again, HTH. Good luck!
