To brush or not to brush?
Wondering if you use a brush on your curls and what kind? One minute I hear not to use one, then I hear they're great for distributing product and defining curls. I'm looking at the Denman D31 and D3 (Goody has one like this too and I grew up using Goody just fine). Apparently the paddle brushes with the balls on the end aren't good but a lot of people use them

Oh GAWD no.
I don't use brushes of any kind, but just because I don't doesn't mean it doesn't work for others. I WILL say however, that of all the brushes out there the only one I'd consider trying is the denman you're considering...BUT if you have thicker hair, DON'T get the D3. I've heard about women with thicker curls ripping their hair out with it (I guess it's a smaller denman?) Try the D30-whatever one if you do get it

I use a Mason Pearson Detangler, and before that I used a paddle brush.

Brushes take out my hair no matter what kind and how I use it. So no, I don't use one.

Thanks, I've heard that too. I bought the Goody version of the D3 this morning, my hair is SHORT! I figured I can work with that for now, if it's no good, it was only $4.99 as opposed to $10+ for the Denman. If I still decide I need one, I'll do the Denman D31 since I have yet to see another brand with a similar brush.

i'm conflicted. I have a whole collection of brushes..Denmans, shower wet brushes, Goody paddle brushes, vent brushes, boar bristles, Tangle Teezers plus some several detangling combs including the Mason Pearson.
I recently finished reading _Curly Girl_ and I've gone back to mostly fingercombing and detangling. In the shower I'll through sections with sandwiched, 'prayer hands' etc. under the stream to pull out shed hairs.
so yah, i'm conflicted because i'm afraid that ditching my brushes completely is going to leave too much shed hair behind. The last time I used a brush, i had a huge wad of hair in the brush from each side. This is even though I'd been rinsing and smoothing through it in the shower a couple times per week.
OTOH I hate how frizzy and amorphous my hair gets when i use brushes regularly. I used to brush through every week. Now I'm down to about once a month and I've found kinks and curls that I didn't know existed because it was always so separated and fuzzed out.
I think my hair looks & feels better in general since backing away from the brush. I think that those weekly sessions were snatching out more than shed hairs and my hair looked sort of weathered.

Not tryin to be a naysayer buuuuuut, in my experience the non-Denman versions aren't the same. They look identical sometimes, but they aren't. The Denman has smooth teeth, the one I bought before it, trying to save money, has seems, and some of those seems are rough. There's more flexibility in the base in the Denman allowing for less pulling as well. The teeth on my first one are all bent up from use. The Denman teeth have withstood and maintained their shape. Just adding my two cents.

I use a Denman knockoff to detangle sometimes & a boar bristle to brush back into a puff when I want slick edges.

I use a small fake denman only when my hair is soaked with condish, for the detangling phase. I have never brushed my hair dry since I went natural. When I am applying product, I used to use a fake Denman to distribute, but with my hair, the strands want to do their own thing, so I just let them. I clump better by smoothing and raking than brushing. When I want to slick the hair back, i use a slim boars bristle brush, but put on lots of leave in moisturizer first. I will say, that the denman knockoff is pretty good at removing shed hairs. I have less knotting at the ends when I use it. When I remove the knots, I find they are made of shed hairs wrapped around rooted hair. HTH!

I've heard that re non-Denman's, but I grew up using Goody, never even heard of Denman before this forum! I stepped away from that $2.99 Annie brand brush though, lol. Goody was a happy medium.

I don't use a brush for purposes stated in the OP, but if I did, I'd purchase the Mason Pearson Detangler or Denman D31/D41...probably the MP because I love the Rake Comb and the Detangling Comb.

Honestly I think you will have to try and see for yourself.
Personally I love mine and use it to detangle with leave in. At first I had a lot of hair and I thought I was breaking it after some time it stopped and I do not have a lot of shed hairs between washing. Now it is a must and I love it.
Oh and my hair texture is fine/normal.

I use a boar bristle brush I do it old school, I like that it distributes oils and water and butters throughout my hair and leaves it so soft. My hair reacts the best when I use a boar brush and less pieces fall out.

I shingle all my products with a shampoo brush which looks alot like the tangle teezer but with wider teeth. Other than that, nope.
