Default NYC ladies: where do you get your hair done?

I live about 3-4 hours from NYC, and I'm going to finally breakdown sometime this summer and get my hair cut and styled professionally for the first time in years.

So where do you go? More importantly where do you NOT go, so I know to avoid those places. LOL

I just treated my grandma to a hair salon treatment (for her b-day) and, honestly, I remember why I'm a DIY-er. Yes, her hair is thin...but, that didn't excuse the botched color job. She got low-lights that looked a mess. Ummm, she went to Christo 5th ave. The people were lovely and seem quite talented (everyone else's hair looked great), but the low-lights my grandma got were absolutely horrid. Thank goodness for clarifying shampoo (and lots of it).

ETA: My grandma has since washed her hair (with regular shampoo- not clarifying) and she says it looks so much better. Apparently, the color looks good now and she's pleased with the results. Soooo, with that said, I'll switch my vote FOR Christo

Hair Rules. But see Dailey, not Dickey. She's an amazing stylist. I get tons of compliments on my cut, whether straight or curly. Their colorist is great too.

Oh but I'm not a huge fan of the wash and go they do on me. Too much shrinkage the way they do it. But the straight styles are good (they straighten to cut anyway) and my flexi rod set was great. I figure I can style my own hair, I'm mostly there for the cut.

For cuts, I LOVE Carlos Flores at the Mario Diab salon downtown (but he's coming to London next week and usually travels around Europe after that so not sure how long he'll be away for). He is amazing at cutting/shaping using the Deva method, but not that great at actually styling (as in, doing wash n go's after he's cut. He uses Deva products which I'm not fond of, but apparently he's fine with you taking your own stuff in), and I've read some reviews saying you should use someone else at the salon if you want to colour. Can't remember who it was, but you should check in the salon reviews section of this site.

Do NOT go to "G's Urban Hair Salon" in Brooklyn!!!!!!! You have been warned!

I occasionally go to a former Devachan stylist who was working from home, but I think she's with a salon now. I haven't talked to her in a bit, but she's reasonable and flex. I have her info.

when i went to ouidad years ago, i had a good experience. and out of the 7 yrs i've been natural, the way ana styled my wash n go was hands down the best hair day i've had. ever. after leaving the salon i got compliments all day long from random strangers. the shape of the haircut was great too. i just don't recommend getting your hair carved and sliced if you don't have thick hair.

1+ to going to go see Carlos Flores. He gave me an amazing cut, the shape was amazing and if you like big hair then he's just the man to see. I went there not knowing what to expect and he gave me an amazing cut. He took his time and went over a lot of tips wit me. However when he styled my hair I thought it was too big. He saw instantly that I wasn't happy wit it and styled it over. I never used anything deva before and didn't like the products so when he styled my hair over he used my products and asked me to show him how I normally do my own hair then he showed me how to do it better. I swear since that appointment wit him my curls have really popped. Its pricey, but I love the shape of my cut and that I can finally truly wash n go. And he's such a sweetheart! =) highly recommend him.

Not so sure on the elasticity, but I don't think I have a very good moisture/protein balance and my hair is ubber dry, so I'm going to go with low... of course I could be very wrong.

I'm leaning towards Carlos. So far what I'm reading about him is making me smile and nod.

May I ask what happened at "G's Urban Hair Salon" in Brooklyn? I passed by this place today, and I remembered this thread.

Hi DarlingDiva,

I ranted about my experience earlier this year in this thread:

I just read your post in the other thread. I am so sorry you were treated that way. That was a horrible experience. Thank you for spreading the word.

General q. How much do they(any of the shops) charge for flat iron or using curly rods? I will have to go google to see what that would look like on natural hair, because all that I'm use to seeing is twist out curls.
