You know what is more scarier than cutting your hair for the first time?
Paying some one to cut if for you, and getting heat damage in return.
Yesterday I took out my three week old twists and was welcomed to knots and tangles and more stringy end pieces then usual. My hair felt dry so I thought maybe it just needs a wash.
But as Im washing my ends still feel rough. I know I needed a trimmed but I didnt want to go to a salon again. Like I mentioned before they gave me heat damage and I dont have a job so I cant afford to get it cut.
Now I remembered JessicazFro told me how she cuts her hair in twists or something. Its not like Jess' advice fell on deaf ears, but I couldnt remember the details exactly of how she did it. And I remembered on Elle's blog that when she does trim her ends on rare occasions she does them in braids or something because they're in layers anyways...
But I knew neither one would work for me because I always do my twists one section bigger than the other twisted part, same for braids too.
So one damp, still drying hair, I used my wide tooth seamless comb, then comb it again with a small tooth one, grabbed the ends and snipped snipped away!
After I was done, my ends were a little softer. And my hair shrunk even more. I have neck length(ish) hair that now shrinks to my ears. Im not gonna lie though, some sides are longer than others, but not by much tho. Maybe 1/4 of an inch??
The front used to be chin length, but now its lip length. Oops
So I decided to share this experience for incase any newly naturals or naturals that haven't got the hang of it yet who felt like they were doing the right thing (DCs, protective styles, wash n' goes) but still combating against dryness and are afraid to trim their own hair.
I really hoped this helped some. Im not saying I'm the first on here to cut my own hair but maybe I've helped in some ways...
Happy hair growing!!
