'Can I touch it?' The fascination with natural, African-American hair - CNN.com

Has anyone read this or watched the video?

I've watched the video and I'm currently reading the accompanying article, just thought I'd share.

I'm annoyed with the comments following the article though . . . just the way people think astounds me.

Yeah...I commented.

While I think the whole slavery take was a bit off, I felt many of the comments indicated a lack of common sense.

I would say natural, kinky-coily hair gets more attention, as a WHOLE, than straight hair...that's from white people and black people (and everybody else). Don't let it be big and all "out". Folks stare. Some of it is admiration, some not. But our natural hair commands attention.

Natural kinky-coily hair is fascinating, and people are curious. But I don't care. It's rude (and I don't care what folks do in other countries) to touch a stranger's hair, butt, face...the whole nine, unless you have permission to do so.

People are way too "free" around other people. I like a more reserved society, where people respect the personal space of others, and don't assume that just because they're curious and "mean no harm", folks are supposed to be okay with being touched by strangers.

As I've said before, didn't we learn this wayyyyy back in kindergarten that we are to respect other people's personal space and not to touch someone else's belongings/person if you don't have permission? Right, I was sure we did . . so why are people acting like things have changed as we've gotten older?

And the slavery comment, was a bit much, but people's reactions to that one line really did amaze me.

Interesting article. I do think the whole your ancestors owned mine arguement to be a bit much...I dont know, but it wouldnt have been the first thing I jumped to. When I was younger I had people touch my hair all the time. My mother hated it. She would get on me if she saw my friends playing in my hair.

Oddly, I didnt have an adult try to touch my hair until I got to be an adult myself. A complete stranger touching my hair is a no no. I dont know whare those hands have been. Its fine to be curious, but please respect my personal space. Its just awkward. Your sitting down mindding your own business and then you feel hands at the back of your head. Its funny though, because you''ll turn around and the person will have this subtle look on there face, almost neutral. Like oh, yeah your my personal chia pet. The two times it has happened to me outside of the sandbox have both been in college class rooms ): I dont know if they were trying to get fresh and thought I would find that cute, but I spent the next hour of lecture wondering if I should go check the beck of my damn head...

Now if I know you, I love people gently playing in my hair. Its soothing! I have friend who will all but demand that someone play in her hair. So yeah, its about personal space for me .
I don't have a problem with people touching my hair if they ask. I don't want to be touched period unless it's invited so the same would apply to my hair. It's a part of my body so don't reach out and touch it if I don't know you or you don't have my permission.

Why are people so damn rude? It's really a shame an article had to even be written about this, bringing awareness to the fact that people have no manners or common sense. People can't keep their hands to themselves these days.

Oh, and the slavery thing, I'll comment on that later. I'm at work right now so I can't read the article and all the comments in depth.

If I find someone so captivating that I feel myself staring, I will say something to the person, "I really think your dress is beautiful", or "I love your locs", or whatever it is. If I see something strange, disgusting, obscene, etc., I still use self control and redirect my eyes, before I get too distracted. I don't just stare blankly at people. Yet, people think it's perfectly fine to do that.

Back to touching folks - Like I said, people love to think because they aren't trying to hurt you, you shouldn't have a problem with them touching you without permission. If you do, you need to "get over yourself". Yes, people are idiots.

I agree, I don't mind people touching my hair if they ask or I invite them to (i.e., put my head on their lap and place their hand in my hair), but for them to just randomly be like "(grip/pet strands without asking)," uh no.

Ok this comment pissed me off

Indexserv I'd like to touch your hair because it's different from mine and I'm curious to see what it feels like. That's about it. Asking questions, being curious... it's how we learn about each other. Give it a try! Ask questions instead of making assumptions about some sort of "ownership" mentality. I think you'll be surprised, and you might learn something about people of "the other color." less

I'm sorry (well, not really), but I don't give two squirts of duck sh*t about you being "innocently curious" about touching something you weren't invited to touch, something that doesn't belong to you. I'm not no damn piece of property! Why is that so fcuking hard for people to understand?!!

And what is with people justifying it by saying "people do it to me" and "people do it to pregnant women too" and "get over yourself". Um....I don't go touching ANYBODY out of curiosity. It's not about slavery or anything like that. It's not about conceit. It is about respect. Plain and simple. Ugh. Let me stop reading this mess before I get in trouble.

Sigh...

If I was preggers and someone I didn't know intimately came up to me and touched my tummy. I would smack them. POINT BLANK. I don't even play...

I don't walk up to people and touch their lips because they are smaller/thinner than mine. I don't walk up to people and touch their eyes because theirs are blue and mine are brown. I don't go up to people and touch their ass because theirs is flat and mine is not. I don't walk up to people and touch their skin because theirs is light and mine is not. I don't walk up to people and touch their hair because theirs is staright and mine is curly.

Keep your damn hands to your damn self.

I just read the article. It wasn't a bad article at all. Of course I didn't like the ignorant comments at the bottom. The video was good. I've been thinking of visiting her salon but I'm on a budget this year, maybe next year.

Back to the touching of hair, I've always thought of it as being rude to touch someone else's hair even if you ask. I have strangers all of the time asking to touch my hair. I've even had co-workers touch my hair and not ask. It still amazes me that their comments are all the same "It's so soft." I see that people still equate natural hair as being nappy.

It's funny because whenever my mom or sister comes to visit or if I'm on the phone with them, it never fails that I get stopped somewhere with someone wanting to know what I use on my hair and asking to touch it.

I wish I could make a cute shirt that says not to touch my hair..lol.

I agree that the slavery comments are a bit out there, but for me, personally, if you don't have permission, you don't get your paws in my hair. Period. The issue is that people don't understand what boundaries are these days and when they've been crossed. I'm not that prim and proper, so I wouldn't be down with returning to Victorian era mores, but re-establishing some respect for other people's personal space is in order.

Once, I got on an elevator in a very rich, predominantly white apartment complex. After a few seconds of silence, the elderly lady in there with me suddenly reached out and tried to grab my hair. In shock and horror, I stepped back and shrieked. A look of surprise was evident on my face - on hers, was a look of what seemed to be digust."Sheesh!" she said. "I was ONLY trying to touch it."

I was not in any way offended by her interest in my hair. Of course she would be! Natural hair is beautiful and intriguing. What I did not like was her invasion of my personal space. Were her hands even clean?

I don't know what was most frightening about the whole experience: The fact that she reached out to touch my hair or her defense that she was 'only' trying to touch it, like she had some kind of right to do so.

How quickly her interest in my hair faded away though... Most awkward elevator ride of my life.
