Default Question about applying oils

When you wash your hair, how many of you guys apply oils to your scalp as opposed to just applying it on your hair for sealing? Is this a good thing to do or would it just give your hair a dirty feeling?

Thanks girls!

I put in leave in conditioner, wet a bit, then put oil in from scalp to ends.

I've always been an oil on scalp gal, but yes, putting too much too frequent can result in build-up and sometimes itchiness for me. I recently stopped doing it mainly because since I cut my locs, I've been washing and playing in my hair a lot more, so I forget, ha! I also started using SheaMoisture's African Black Soap scalp elixir, so I don't want to conflict by then putting an oil.

Periodically, I apply a super thin film of castor oil to my scalp. And when I say thin, I mean thin. Castor oil is so thick and greasy, if to much is used it can make hair dirty and greasy feeling

I do. It depends on the oils and blends (either ones that I purchase or make). Since I cowash twice a week and shampoo at least once every other week (most of the time weekly) due to frequent working out, I generally don't worry about build up.

Some people who don't wash their hair as frequently may find it to be a bit much.

Sometimes I massage my scalp with coconut oil and it practically disappears but as GNC said it depends on how often you wash .

I do it when I'm not being lazy. I wash frequently, be it shampooing or co-washing, so I've never really had a problem with buildup.

I usually do this but as a pre-poo. Have not done it after I wash.

Sometimes I will apply oil to my scalp. But I mostly apply it where my hair feels like it needs it the most (my ends).

'Greasing' the scalp has been part of my hair care routine since chidhood. The only difference (now that I'm older and wiser) is that I use an unrefined oil (usually coconut, which is also my prepoo of choice) instead of a petroleum based product.

The coconut oil dissolves really quickly and does not leave behind the heavy, greasy feeling that petroleum based products do. I also use castor oil to help thicken, and a little rosmary oil to help stimulate growth along my fragile hairline.

I wouldn't say it's bad for ALL hair but particularly for my own hair it's VERY bad. The reason I say that is it mostly depends on what KIND of oils you use and what condition your scalp is in. My scalp for example is very oily which results in dandruff, so putting more oil on it is a big NO. However there are people who also have dandruff that is cause by dry scalp and could benefit from scalp oiling. Having scalp problems of any kind will effect your overall hair health, so it's best that you take care of it. I would say pick a light oil (one that doesn't clog pores) and try it for a bit, I don't think it would hurt. And if you hate just think of it as a lesson learned.

I have oily scalp, and apart of the reason I wash as often as I do is to cleanse my scalp. I I always put oil on my scalp and hair before washing.. but rarely do i oil my scalp rght after shampooing. I was never a scalp greaser though, everytime I did it I didnt like the results (of course cause I was using petroleum products and it was clogging my pores) plus my grandma, who did my hair said it makes dandruff worse (which was true, again using petroleum). So i never got in the habit of greasing like some people.
I apply my leave in and seal with oil and whatever gets on my scalp stays. Im sure if you have dry scalp though, oiling it damp/freshly washed would be a great help. Do whatever you like best!
