I used to think it was not necessary, but when I started getting regular trims my hair started to act better. Now I get less single strand knots, my hair holds a shape better and detangles easier. I trim every two to 4 months.

I did dusting of my ends every three months. I finally had my hair professionally trimmed after 16 months and my hair is singing! Detangling, washing and styling are much easier and faster.

I trim like 1-2 a year. I haven't gotten a trim at all in 2012. I plan on waiting until december (it'll be a year since my last straighten/trim) to get one because I do not like cutting my own hair. Also I so get ssks and a few split ends but if I notice them more and more I up my DC/protective style game and it reduces them significantly. My hair was just past my shoulders in November 2011 (2 year anniversary) and the back hit APL in May, so my growth doesn't seem to be compromised.
