What is your definition of natural?

Like Tree18Likes

Okay, I feel I just became natural because I stopped wearing weaves and wigs. I was very young when I decided to stop wearing relaxers...around 14.

Can you be considered natural if you're wearing weaves and wigs? Just wanted to hear other opinions on this.....

If you are natural underneath your wig/weave, you are "natural underneath your wig/weave." The hair you grow is still natural, you just don't wear it out.

idk..i think if your natural curl pattern isnt permanently changed in any way, youre natural. but if you straighten, or wear wigs/weaves 99.9% of the time (like, as your default style and not as a protective style), youre not "natural, natural".. like, no one is gonna look at you ad say "she's natural". it's like you're hair is natural, but you aint bout that natural hair life lol.

You're natural if you don't deliberately alter your hair texture with a chemical process.

If your hair texture CHANGES because you dye your hair, in my opinion, you're still natural. If you're a weave/wig queen but keep your hair natural under it, you're still natural.

As long as you don't use chemicals to permenantly alter your hair texture, you are natural in my book. Some naturals wear wigs or weaves as a protective style so as long as they don't permenantly alter their hair underneath the wig or weave, they are still natural.

Good question. I go back and forth between wigs and wearing my hair out. When i wear my hair out AA women ask me a lot "are you completely natural?" i say yes but i have been wondering if i ever decide to dye my hair would that still be an honest answer. If i did it wouldnt be permanent dye because my hair hates that stuff.

if we're going to count what we where ON our head as an indication of 'natural' or not, we may as well say headbands, scarves, oil, etc alter our naturalness.

i don't believe there is a 'perfect' definition of natural hair.

In the case of weaves and wigs, if its not altered under there and you wear a weave/wig 364 days a year. youre still natural.......

As long as your texture isn't chemically changed, you're natural. But if you always wear wigs no one will ever know you're natural. So...

Some people even say defining your CURLS is anti natural. If you're defining your curls- and I mean YOUR NATURAL GROWN CURLS!!!- you have not "accepted your natural hair". I was like.. Are you SERIOUS?!! Honey people get crazy about this natural thing!

Natural to me means the hair has not been altered from it's natural hair type and or texture permanently to be something that it isn't in it's natural state.

That could be with chemicals (ie relaxers, texurizers, curly perms, kertain straightening or brazilian straightening) or thermally damaging the hair for a certain purpose (IE: so called heat training).

Weaves, wigs, extensions and hair dye doesn't denote to me that someone's real hair isn't "natural". If all their own hair that they grew meets the criteria I stated above...to me they are still natural. I don't have to see their true hair color or hair under the add-ons to accept them as a natural.

I just wish people would stop trying to "strip" others of their natural "title" altogether. It means different things to different people, oh well. I love information sharing on Twitter and the hair boards, but some people get waaaaay too involved in someone else's hair.

Never got the dye thing either. A lot of women claim they have this perspective b/c if you're a black woman and you dye your hair blonde, you want to be white. But uh, what if you dye your hair darker? What then? It's still chemicals. I've dyed my hair (natural and relaxed) just about every color of the rainbow and then some - blue, black, green, purple, red, blonde, light brown, auburn (okay I was in HS with the crazy colors), so I guess I've just wanted to be everything? When I dyed my hair blue I wanted to be...a peacock?
I consider natural is when your hair is not chemically altered such as relaxers and texturizer.
To me natural means you don't have a relaxer or a texturizer. It's that simple for me. But if someone always wears wigs and weaves i don't know why it matters what's underneath. Especially if it's never seen. That's why i don't get the point of interviewing these natural hair celebrities that never wear their hair out. If you giving me weave tips fine but i don't need your natural hair care tips if you never weat your natural hair out. Okay i am all off topic now. Natural for me is no relaxers and no texturizers oh yeah and no jheri curls either. LOL

Natural hair for me is like what everybody else says...just no relaxers or tex-laxd. I dye my hair a couple times a year so maybe Im biased. Ppl can tell me Im not natural cuz I dye my hair but that's their opinion. I would consider you natural. Just because you don't wear your hair out doesn't mean anything.

I went through a process of defining natural for myself. It started with no more relaxers.13 or so months later I left the flat iron & direct heat alone. I now use only organic products on my hair. I just started using natural skincare products. I never wore makeup or got into fake nails. I just feel now that I am embracing "natural". When you see me its just juices n berries folks. That doesn't mean that other ppl aren't authentic or real. I will leave you with an outkast lyric "is everybody with dreads for the cause". You can be as natural as you want to be, but if your attitude is bad then your naturality is irrelevent. My natural hair does affirm my consciousness as an African American woman but thats personal. You would have to get to know me to confirm that.

If I was meeting someone for the first time in a crowded place, say at the mall or a party and I asked what does this person look like and I was told "She's average height, your complexion, and she's natural," I would look for someone with kinky, curly, c-strand, z-strand, coily, wavy, s-wavy, SOMETHIN type of hair. Can see where someone might question the wig/weave thing, but hey, if we took some weave/wig wearers, strapped a parachute on them and shoved them out of a plane flying at high altitudes, they'd sure be natural by the time their feet hit the pavement

Anyway, I think weaved/wigged, pressed, braided, twisted out/braided out, knotted, dreaded, curler set (minus chemicals), finger-twirled, teased, greased, crimped, finger-waved, pencil-waved, afro-ed, and flat-ironed hair are natural. But as some have already said, "natural" is a relative term. My hair is semi-dyed and so my color is not natural.

Maybe "natural"/"unnatural" should be differentiated from intentionally deceptive. But even that's tricky. Wearing a wig and never showing natural hair can seem deceptive, but then again some ppl just like wearing wigs for a change. Just like some ppl relax their hair because they want a temporary change, whereas it seems others may be doing it out of hate for their curls, or sometimes, ethnicity. Great topic!

Usually if a woman is without a wig or weave then I always heard her or other people refer to her as wearing her "real hair." That's pretty much how I referred to it as well, not that it really came up much at all. Titles and definitions only came into play when I started transitioning because I was learning different things from forums and other places. To me, being natural means not using anything chemical to alter your hair's texture. I don't go as deep as some do regarding color or heat. To each his own though.

You know...while I do use the term "natural" among the natural hair community I am sort of reluctant about the term "natural" in general. It's because of all the drama that surrounds it especially among people of color of who is "really" natural and who isn't.

I much more prefer to tell people in general that my curls are natural. I dye my hair with a semi-permanent color. So I can see someone arguing.."Oh well you aren't natural". And technically that is true since my hair isn't the naturally jet black. I dye it that way. But my curls are natural. I don't straighten them or do things to make my hair less curly. So for me, "naturally curly" seems more of an accurate description of my hair.
