Hello Chicas!

I big chopped a month ago and although I was loving my hair, things are changing and i"m not so happy anymore.

My hair gets really dry and my main problem is every morning I have a frizzy mess of matted afro. I have about 5 inches of growth. My kinks, coils have great definition and are perfectly curly when wet. As the day goes along it starts to frizz giving it an undefined matted look, by the next morning, its a mess!!

Please help... what do I do? I just bought a set of products and still trying them out to see what works
CJ Daily Fix-- its good
CJ Curls in a bottle-- it gives definition the first day, then it just makes it dry and frizzy.
AO Honeysuckle...been using it since transitioning days its my favorite!
Bee Mine Luscious---its moisturizing, I just dont think I know how to use it.
Mop Top deep conditioner--not as slippery as I hoped for...very $$ so I need to keep using.. any suggestions?? maybe as a Leave-in?

I need defined moisturized curls! Please help me in achieving this... Im being discouraged of my natural look
Go to walmart and get a bottle of herbal essence hello hydration. It's very good for moisture and u can use it to style. If u want something thicker try he hydralicious self targeting. If u want to know what u can do at night then try a modified baggy technique with oil or butters and a little conditioner. For more hold try Eco styler gel or qp least feels like silk gel. Try some things u can get on ground first to see what ur hair may like.

I did not find the CJ CIAB to be very good. It dried me out. Try to explore other gels if you feel like you need it.

Do you wrap/bonnet your hair at night? What's your nighttime routine? I use to sleep without wrapping my head and my hair got very dry even with the satin pillowcase.

What are you sealing with or are you sealing at all? Sealing is crucial for me to keep my hair moisturized along with weekly DC'ing
You should add a styler to the list as well. Is your hair coarse or fine? High or low porosity? These are factors too and it may help the posters recommend products. Eco Styler gel seems to work well for all hair types and you should definitely invest in a sealer as was mentioned.

And congrats on your BC!

I'm not obsessed: I just LOVE my hair!!

More moisture, less protein. Every conditioner you use has some form of protein. Also, I believe CJ Curls in a bottle contains a water-soluble cone.

Dislikes: Proteins (except occasional Silk protein), Cones, Oils
I thought about using Mop Top as a spritz leave in but I will definitely have to pay more attention to my reaction to protein.

My night time routine is just wearing a bonnet. This week I applied some of the luscious at night, it made it softer.
I also tried getting into the shower in the mornings but not really wetting my hair, (just the mist and steam) and then applied Luscious and jojoba oil. It was a lot better than before. I could use a little more definition but maybe dont need a gel.

Sealing: I've been sealing with jojoba oil. But im thinking it might be to light for the winter. This week I tried sealing with BM Luscious (applied on damp hair) I have to say I did see a huge difference in moisture.

Protein vs. Moisture: I didnt realize most of my products were protein based. I need to figure out if my hair likes it or maybe I'm just using a little too much of it. How exactly do I get more moisture? so I can maybe try to balance it out.

Porosity and thickness? I'm not too sure how to determine whether my hair is high or low porosity ... or fine/coarse. I have a lot of hair, tightly coiled so I would say I have coarse hair but the single strands seem to be fine. Can someone please clarify how to determine these?

Again, Thanks for the help!
I have a 3" TWA and I found out recently that my hair doesn't like cones.
I have thick, low porous 4a that is for some reason silky defined 3c/4a near my scalp and and 4a/4b coarse and frizzy, not defined, fro-y not near my roots.
Baggying helps me. So does a quick cowash in the morning. Make sure you seal before going to be.
But just like you, it's been 1 month since my BC too and I haven't gotten the hang of things yet
Shampoo: VO5 Kiwi Clarify Shampoo (monthly)

Deep Condition: Aubrey Organics Rose (1-2x a week)

Co-wash: Aubrey Organics Rose (2x a week)

Protein: Mega Tek (bimonthly, I'm sensative)

Leave-in/ Moisturizer: Vegetable Glycerin-Rose Water Spritz and/or conditioner (daily)

Sealant: Shea butter-coconut oil mixture (daily)

Hair type: 4a/4b?-0S, cottony, thick

Texture:
Also here are a few ways to determine your texture. If the individual strands feel thick..similiar to a thin thread..it's coarse. If it's about half that..it's medium. If it's less than that..more wispy..like you can barely feel it in your hand..it's fine.

I would say by your description that while you have a thick density to your hair..that the individual strands are fine. Usually it's easy to tell..you know if one strand of your hair feels thick or thin. A lot of tight curlies and kinkies actually have either fine or medium hair but think because their hair is densely packed and hard to moisturize then it must be thick. Can't tell you HOW many times I've seen WOC swearing they have "coarse" or "thick" hair..when they dont. I think it's because when WOC think of coarse hair we've sort of been programmed to think our hair is coarse automatically because of how it looks and that it's not smooth sometimes.

Porosity:
About porosity..if your hair is normal (medium) porosity it will get wet under water at a pretty normal speed. It will hold moisture normally with no problems and be able to support a wide range of products. It almost always feels balanced when properly cared for. If your hair is high porosity it gets wet super easy but gets dry just as quickly...seems like you always have to struggle to keep it moisturized..and sealing is your best friend. Low porosity..seems like it takes a while for the hair to get wet..the water even beads up on top of it first..it seems to get much softer if you use very warm or darn near hot water..but once the hair is dried..it feels very dry and maybe hard if it's not moisturized well. It's hard to get it moisturized at all and almost always feels dry if you don't put something very moisturizing on it while it's wet.

If you've dyed your hair with permanent dye for a while..your hair is most likely high porosity. Given, some people just have naturally very porous hair. Doesn't seem like your hair is normal porosity from your description. It might be low and that's why it's having a hard time staying moisturized. Now protein is great for fine hair within reason BUT if your hair is low porosity then you have GOT to find a way to keep it balanced with moisture..and you should lean your products more to moisture and use protein when you feel like your curls need a little boost or if you permanently dye your hair.

I highly..highly recommend a book called: The Science of Black Hair by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy if you haven't gotten it yet. Also a website called www.livecurlylivefree.com that has an excellent e-book about curly hair care for 10 bucks. Both those books can tell you pretty much all you need to know about your curly or kinky hair...well help YOU figure it out.
