Need Advice on Pro Hair Cuts: Ouidad Vs Deva or another curly cut?

Any 4a or 4b ladies ever gotten a ouidad or deva cut?
How did it go?
How did it grow out?
Would you do it again?
Can you recommend a stylist?
Do you have to stick with their products to maintain the look?
Please share any pros & cons. I am considering it for 2012 & I don't trust stylists very much.
I will probably get it done in NYC or LA.

I posted this in 4b but someone suggested I post it in 4a for more responses. I am starting to think I may actually be 4a but I'm not sure. When my hair dries I know it is not shaped well so I need a cut either way. If you have really thick hair and have had it cut successfully using one of these methods please share your experience.

Thanks for your help on this.

Also, Carol's Daughter Products...are they just over priced products with average results? (Did I just hijack my own post? oops.)

I had a ouidad cut done by Ana in NYC. It went very well and it was literally the best hair day I've ever had. Even though she showed me step by step how to replicate the look (which was totally easy in theory) I could never make it look the same, even when using the same products. But it still looked good.

I'd recommend the cut to people who have thick hair. I don't have thick/dense hair at all and while my hair looked fine in wash n gos, when I pulled it into a ponytail or flat ironed it was super duper thin. Another con was the frizz I got when the cut started growing out. Apparently that's a common "side effect" from those cuts if you don't keep getting them. It took me years to grow the frizz out.

Blame it on the cell phone...
Thank you. I am really on the fence about this. I cut my hair every few years and I'm going to be 30 in a few years & I think my growth cycle will slow drastically around that time. I need debulking in a serious way but what if my hair doesn't bounce back?

I have already given you my answer in the 4b thread (Deva), but just a quick one to allay any fears: I'm 34, and definitely not experiencing any kind of slowing down of growth cycle.

Good luck deciding on what cut to get. There are a few threads on here if you do a search- that was how I decided on Deva in the first place.
Products in current rotation:

Terressentials Pure Earth Mud Wash; Elucence MBC (now really just for cowashing, leg shaving or emergencies); Curl Junkie: Repair Me, Deep Fix, Curl Rehab; AOHSR (retiring); Oyin Handmade: Honey Hemp, Hair Dew, J&B; Qhemet Biologics: BRBC (retiring- prefer Oyin HD), AOHC, OHHB; Jojoba Oil for scalp; Castor Oil or Shea butter to seal; Henna & Ayurvedic pastes when I can be bothered.

Still searching for the perfect stylers, but loving CJ CIAB over everything so far
Thanks. Thats good to know.

I got a Deva back during the summer and honestly, for the money, I didn't see much difference between the before and after and I definitely didn't like the Deva products.

Ouidad.
I have always loved their cuts. My hair is fine, but dense. The cuts are hard to mess up. It doesn't matter who the stylist is the method is the same so they can't screw it up.

Been getting the Ouidad cut since 05', but stopped back in 09 bc I had such a horrible insulting experience with a stylist that I swore off the salon.

Then they changed their products and that made me angry.

I would go back for a cut again, but only if I could find someone I clicked with.

I am starting to see the differences between the 2. I am leaning toward ouidad. I will probably get it done in Feb. When I have a little more length.

Hi Sienna!

Not sure if you are aware, but with the Ouidad cut they don't cut length- per se. You hair will not be/or appear shorter after the cut. With the carve and slice they cut select pieces internally so that your curls will form better/have more definition and lay better (you hair will not stack out from your head, but hang) no matter the length.

I have always gotten more length showing after a Ouidad cut. Also after the cut product applies better and more evenly and my hair tangles less.

I just had my first Deva cut a couple weeks ago. Honestly, I thought I wasted $70 bucks because I could not tell that much of a difference. I will try the Ouidad cut next time.

I can see deva is not for me. I hope that the ouidad stylist isn't scissor happy. I don't want to have to go off on anyone.

I forgot to answer the questions.

1. For me, it grows out well. It can take 4-6 months before it starts to look crazy and time for another cut again.

3. I stopped using their products when they changed their formulas. The products used to be really good. I still have some of the old stuff left, but I simply conditioner wash and use aloe vera gel etc.

Also, the only way that your hair may appear shorter is due to the curl definition. They won't remove length. But due to the curls becoming more spiraly...

It is kind of hard to explain the cut. But if a Ouidad stylist wants to trim your ends then run as that is not how the cut goes at all! They never go horizontal across the hair at the ends. Like I said in all of my years of getting the cut I have never had a bad experience. And I have gone to different salons.

You said you stopped getting the cuts, how long did it take you to "grow it out"? Did it really look crazy when you stopped getting the cuts? Seeing as how my BC was 10 months ago, I don't want to be forced to grow something else out if I decide I don't want another Quidad cut.

I'm thinking about scheduling a cut for this week - because the thought of less density to deal with and my hair laying more downwards with *thrills* me, and I want it done for Christmas. But I don't want to regret it.

And what did it look like straight?

My hair doesn't look as dense when I straighten it...

Oy

Do you have pics of your Quidad cut days or the time you were growing it out?

I did a gentle blow out with a blowdryer once and it looked decent. I never straighten my hair.

What I mean by crazy is that you hair will start to not look as good as it originally did immediately after the cut. After about 4 months or so I noticed that I needed more product - wash and goes were more challenging. My hair tangled more.

As far as growing it out. Each person is different. I will say maybe it took a year or more for the entire cut to grow out. These are internal layers.

Your hair will never look as it did prior to having the Ouidad cut, which I don't see as a bad thing, but after a few months (4 for me) of having the cut it won't look as good as it did immediately after having the cut.
