Very happy to hear your news Chigaco Kinks! Didn't even know you were worrying about that. Keep doing what you can at the gym, too.

It irritates me greatly that my laptop battery is basically dead (~15 minute life). Only had the damn thing a year and I remembered to unplug it as much as I could. Now I don't dare! KMT!

Ion know. If I have my laptop in my lap (macbook pro) then the battery dies so fast...compared to if its just on my desk

The skinny fat article was in Women's Health, November 2011 issue. It's called "Young, Slim, and Diabetic," by Sushma Subramanian. The article says 15% of people with type ii are not overweight (source: NIH). A doctor in the article calls it "TOFI": thin outside fat inside. Fat covering your innards yields inflammation that makes your pancreas and liver unhappy, make you more insulin sensitive. The article says a big risk factor is not exercising or regulating weight through diet alone. The article says Asian Americans are hypersensitive to "extra calories" by genetics. Basically genetic predisposition.

The woman starting off the article is a 29 year old thin woman of Chinese-American ethnicity diagnosed as prediabetic. The article also mentions a 30 year old woman (race not identified) who is 5'10 and 165 pounds who was diagnosed with diabetes at 28.

When I read this last month I remember being shocked that a decent article on this was in Women's Health. Anyway, page 143 explains how type ii diabetes works.

If you want to know more about type ii diabetes, go to the CDC website. You will see the states with highest prevalence of type ii diabetes are something like Mississippi and Tennessee. When you look at the data for type i, Colorado has the highest prevalence. I don't think it's a coincidence that Mississippi and Louisiana have huge black populations (coupled with high poverty) and Colorado has a huge white population (coupled with relatively wealthy population). BUT overall, Colorado has very little diabetes in general. (I'm thinking people there are really outdoorsy, very active, very health conscious....big contrast compared to states like Tennessee and Mississippi where people may like hunting but they're not exactly hiking and doing all sorts of super active sports in weather extremes. And really good but risky cuisine here, too.) But those are my conclusions.

Notice on the second link the red in Arizona and New Mexico. Those areas are reservations. I'm betting those other red blotches in northwesterly states are reservations, too. From all of the data I have seen, I personally believe high, simple carbs seriously devastate non-white people. Our systems just can't take it. We're more likely to be poor and not have access to environments and things that help you remain healthy. This is not even taking into account predispositions for diabetes.

The metaphor I mentioned about central heat or whatever, basically my opinion is if you must eat simple carbs, you need to eat that with some protein to cushion the shock to your system. All that sugar hitting your blood suddenly like that makes your endocrine system go into overdrive. It spits out all of this insulin to take care of it. Then once it's gone you start getting the shakes and **** because you've got all this excess insulin floating around with no sugar to Pac-Man up. So then you eat more simple carbs and start the stupid cycle again. Over time, your pancreas just....wears out. It does not work in isolation either.

Once your pancreas gets tired and your insulin producing cells burn out, then you're up the creek. Suddenly you have glucose but not enough insulin. This is high blood sugar. Glucose is horrible for your blood vessels in high concentrations, it scars them up. Scar tissue develops on the "sticky" vessel walls, making them even "stickier". Coupled with a high bad cholesterol diet, cholesterol starts lining your vessels. Small blood vessels die first (capillaries are where oxygen/carbon dioxide transfer occurs; poorly ventilated parts is not good): numbness and tingling in your fingers and toes. Then you can't feel sensations and temperature there anymore. Vision gets bad and kidneys get bad because of dying capillaries there. The tiny vessels in your brain, heart and other organs are also effected. Next thing you know you have chest pain, weird headaches, and you're just not peeing like you used to.

People emphasize the amputations related to diabetes because people fear that (seemingly) more than the above. But it's all going to break, slowly but surely.

Anyone can get diabetes. But you can prevent it via diet and exercise (exempting predispositions, which just means you have to work harder). You can't "cure" yourself of type i. You will need medication for life, generally. But you can "cure" yourself of type ii with diet and exercise. You won't need medication anymore, and I'm going to be honest and say I don't fully get how this works off the top of my head. I should know, but I frankly can't remember. I think the idea is your new and improved lifestyle allows your body to run on what is essentially a burned out pancreas that doesn't have to work so hard anymore since you have a better handle on your diet and physical activity. Exercise gives your body better control over insulin production. Diets balanced (not to be confused with equal amounts, but adequate proportions) in protein, fat, and complex carbs condition your system to not shoot out insulin so fast. Your pancreas doesn't have to take off at a sprint to take care of glucose introduced to your system.

That concludes my soapbox! Maybe this will help someone.

Hope I didn't bore you to death! Find that Women's Health article, it's really decent.

This was so informative. I've never known much about diabetes but I've always wondered about it. Sure is strange Halle doesn't know her condition well. But at least she's not insulin dependent. Good for her!

I've been really seriously thinking about how I've slacked off in my diet and excercise lately. And I've got all the excuses in the world..I'm tired, I'm busy, I've gotta work, I gotta take my kid to school, I've got to go to synagogue, I gotta spend time with the hubs, I gotta walk the dog. Blah, blah, blah. I do not want to get diabetes and your information has sort of scared the living day lights out of me. It's given me the motivation to get back to what I had been doing and that's making time to eat better and exercise.

I will definitely be looking at those websites that you offered. Never hurts to be aware. So thank you!
I'm making this ish up as I go along!

Best news I've heard in 4 yrs....no cancer cells were found, I'm so damn happy I could spit!!

Bad news, my damn thyroid is swollen. So I've gained 15 pounds in like 3months and I just knew it was hubby's dulicious blueberry pancakes and bacon he cooks every Sat and Sun.
I feel good knowing it wasn't just the pancakes and bacon (I didn't want to give them up) plus I've been busting my ass at the gym or some type of exercise 7 days a week so I probably would have gained even more weight had I not been workout.
