It has been a looong time since I posted in here and I just wanted to say Hello!!! Also NCC girl you are amazing. I've been working a horrible schedule for the last three weeks 430 am to about noon or 2 pm and it made me gain the 12 pounds I had just lost back

. So now I am about to restart my fitness and that was such a great thing to see. Thanks for sharing.

Protein does not "turn" to fat. Your body will store excess protein as fat...but your body stores excess sugar, carbs, and ingested fat as....fat. That's just the way the body works...excess everything is stored as fat.

I've still never fully understood this. Proteins are made up of loads of amino acids and fats are glycerol and fatty acids. I don't get how one becomes the other without lots of breaking down of the amino acids (whcih would produce a lot of energy, surely?).

Gluconeogenesis. Proteins are converted to glucose, then from there to pyruvate through glycolysis and then fatty acids.

Where are the bio majors!? Lolol! Last time I took this was in the 90's...lol!

Girl I was chemistry and I despised biochem with a passion that burned deep within....lol. But that sounds about right so I'm gonna go with it.

So I was thinking about you a while ago because I am back in Md and working in DC again. I was thinking I needed to get in touch with you again. I have been here since september.
Anytime you want some recipes I got you and anyone else. I've been on a serious clean cooking kick for a while now and you know I'm still a pastry chef so I got the yummy stuff on lock.

It is not my area of expertise, so I will not argue what you have presented here. But as you stated there is not any literature that fully supports [thus, nor denies] a 1:1 relationship. I'll just say that my intention was not to imply such a relationship.

I will also say that the all of the nutrition books that I have read have stated this as "fact" by professional nutritionists; one of them explains that the high protein diets from animal sources causes the kidneys to allow more calcium pass into the urine, which results in higher acid levels in the body. In order to neutralize/buffer some of this excess acid, calcium is 'leached' from the bones and excreted into the urine.

Again, I am not an expert in this field anyway, but this is just one explanation that I have read. I am certainly interested in reading your thoughts on this perspective.

Well, I'm not a nutrition expert, and they don't teach nutrition in medical school. What they do teach however, is endocrinology, physiology, and how to read, assess, and interpret scientific data. So, based on this body of knowledge I was trained to form an opinion. I can't tell you or anyone else what to believe or not believe, but I can say that the information and the data is out there. Emedicine is free, PubMed is free and easy to search for all the peer reviewed literature out there, etc etc.

Now, the way you originally phrased your response isolated calcium, when whether we retain or get rid of calcium is dependent upon multiple factors. Diet and lifestyle do have to be taken into account, but to isolate calcium as you state nutritionists have in relation to high protein diets is in fact a causal relationship. What defines a causal relationship in research is when a change in one variable (high protein diet) causes a change in another variable (calcium levels). A link suggests a correlation as you mentioned but to have that the two variables would need to have a relationship. This relationship is not well-established because there are too many confounding factors(Sodium/Chloride levels, Magnesium/Calcium ratio in the body, physical activity, sunlight exposure, renal function, Vit D levels, endocrine regulation, acid/base balance, fruit to protein intake,etc) as to why calcium levels are affected. Calcium regulation is dependent on multiple factors and I don't think one "link" breaks the whole system down. I'm throwing this out there for the person that's reading what you're saying, and what these books(which are not peer-reviewed, nor fully fact checked) are saying and taking it as the law and regurgitating it without doing their own research, examining the body of literature and forming an opinion.

Someone could possibly go out and have protein fear because of what was said here and we talk about so many different things we're doing or trying to do to lose weight and your diet/lifestyle is NOT a benign thing. It's more potent than any drug and it can help or harm you. I'm just here to be the divergent opinion.

Just like in all areas, when research is done or someone makes claims, it is important to find out what studies they are based on as so many variables should be considered, you should know in what context they are making the claims (or if they're just a crock of sh*t). Happens all the time in my field. In my mind that is implied, but I often forget (usu late at night lol) that sometimes on boards it's just "easier" for some people to take what a few people say in a discussion [on any topic] and adopt major changes without doing the critical thinking thing (or the "take the time to look it up like I did" thing) first.

I considered starting a thread for this, but I figure the answer will be so simple it isn't even funny. I tend to overcomplicate situations. Anyway, here goes...

I am a late bloomer. Until I was maybe 20 years old I was like, "Eww, boys." I even thought I was gay or asexual for a bit because I just wasn't physically attracted to guys. I mean, I had crushes, but they were based on the intellect or emotional quality of a guy, not on their looks. Whenever my friends had conversations about which guys or celebrities I thought was cute, I didn't know how to answer that question.

So now that you have a little background, here is the current issue I am having. I believe I am physically attracted to a guy I don't like too much. Whenever I am around this guy, I feel like I am on fire. I can't describe it. It is exciting...but scary because I feel so exposed and vulnerable. I feel as though he can tell. I don't know how true that is, but I hate it. It would be awkward enough to deal with this with a guy that I actually liked and vibed with...but in addition to the attraction I also feel uneasy around this guy for some reason (even though I don't think he is mean or anything).

What can I do to get rid of this feeling? Help!

Edit: I realize that I might be confusing physical and sexual attraction, which could be happening because I rarely experience either (although right now I may be experiencing both...:S).

No frame of reference--having him to talk to makes gives me additional perspective on how to stay true to myself while still dealing with outside people.

If I were to date him, I would have nothing that would allow me look at men objectively (beyond my own perspective). I would be a bitter woman with no intentions of changing. Knowing he likes me like that makes me uncomfortable because he's the one I would talk to if I found out a guy liked me--without that I'm at a loss.

There are other reasons too, lol, but that is the main one. I just want things to go back to the way they were.

I completely agree. But part of the reason my best friend is my best friend is because we didn't work in high school. Now 10 years later I realize how stupid we both were and want to give it another go. 😒 to bad he's practically engaged to an awesome girl.

I'm only a nutritional science major, and am currently taking my second semester of biochem (geez).

But yeah, excess consumption of any of the 3 macronutrients can turn to fat. However, I do think it's more likely for people nowadays to take in excess CHO than proteins, so I wouldn't worry much about it--unless protein is all you eat, lol.
