But seriously, when they first put the pics of the cast on on one of the magazine sites, the comment section was full of what your co-workers said. I was like what part of the book did you not understand? Some were saying she was supposed to look like Prim ( huh?--Katniss said she REMINDED her of Prim), some were trying to take the easy way out and say they thought she may be Hispanic or Indian. What about Cato from her district? I bet with all my money that they had no problem thinking Cato was a black!

I read all the books and enjoyed them. I'm in my 40's and only one other person I know in real life has read them and she's the organizer of a book club I belong to. In fact, that's how I got into them. She had the group read "The Hunger Games" last year and discuss it. Anyway, I've been on Hunger Games fan boards where the majority of the posters were kids and some of them were shocked or dismayed to find out that they casted a black girl as Rue. Which was kind of annoying. Because like you, I didn't miss the passage that clearly stated the girl was black. But then, we'd have to fault the fact that white people are considered the normative standard and people of color aren't considered "normal."

Rue was pretty obviously black. I'm not sure how people would miss that.

The only casting issue I had was that I thought Kravitz was a bit old (hot as he is) for Cinna. Seeing a clip of him and Katniss changed my mind on that one.

I still wonder if the Seam folks are Melungeons.

Well, I always thought Cinna was a "serious gay man" lol. It's hard to see Lenny in that role, so we will have to see what the chemistry is like throughout the movie.

She didn't want to be conscious. I heard that it hurts a lot, especially when you're an adult and you have impacted teeth. She got out of it though.lol She cancelled the appointment 20 minutes ago, when it was supposed to be right now, and rescheduled it with a surgeon that will give her general anesthesia.

Okay, just so we're clear, psychotic (aka "psycho") and psychopathic clinically aren't the same. FYI just for anyone reading this. I found this quick article that sort of talks about where I was going when I used that term. I am a grad student in clinical psychology so I personally wouldn't use that term loosely.

also, even if he was a psychopath, or had any other mental disorder, it wouldn't lessen his criminal responsibility (especially if he was a psychopath. from what my profs tell me, and from what i've read, he'd probably get harsher treatment if he was a psychopath). the courts only care that you're able to stand trial (btw, insanity is a legal term, not clinical), and they might consider your mental state at the time. the 911 proves that he was in his right mind when he called, and he was apparently able to communicate w/ the cops effectively when they found him, so mental illness or not, he'd (in theory) be treated like other mentally "healthy" criminals.

Hmm.. well for me when I remove my irritation and my emotion about this out of it.. I don't know if he was out "hunting negros" or not. Given, I do think he probably has some racist views concerning blacks. I don't know for sure that Zimmerman has no guilt or remorse for what happened. The man hasn't really told how he feels about it one way or the other.. he's stayed out of the public. I believe it's likely that he's scared and definitely fears for his life. Seems there are conflicting views about him. In the neighborhood ..a few black people have come forward and said basically that's he's a great guy and definitely a good guy. Others say he was very strict about "neighborhood security" asking about "young black guys that look like outsiders" and even stopped an attempted burglary. Also I don't know what all the circumstances were behind this situation with his ex-girlfriend either. I majored in Sociology and I'd personally have to hear more about him and his life..but from what I've heard and read.. it's not enough for me to label psychopath or having any other psychological problems for that matter at this point. To many conflicting stories, info, and lack of concrete info about him period.

I don't really put a lot of faith in the justice system when it comes to handling crimes that involve black people. I always take a "it remains to be seen" stance. I don't know how good a lawyer this man has nor do I know whether or not he'll be tried and convicted at this point. He hasn't even been arrested for anything. And if he is..what will come out of it ? So right now I feel like it's all rather moot until his story develops.

It does seem like the Sanford police totally dropped the ball on this though. But I'm not even remotely surprised by it. I found out that the Sanford police has a history of "overlooking" things. For instance, a Sanford police lieutenant's son was caught on video tape beating a homeless black man and the department declined to prosecute. The footage of the video tape ended up on Youtube and only then was the lieutenant's son arrested. And after it was all said and done..all they (his family) did was pay off the homeless guy and the cop's son got probation. And would you believe that the same officer that was in charge of that case is the same exact officer that was in charge of the Trayvon Martin shooting scene ???

Obviously we would need to know more for a definite diagnosis. But what I said was my opinion, based on what I have studied. And I certainly am not going to disagree that IMO this is also a racism issue, but I just think that the more info that comes out, the more we will find in Zimmerman's closet. If they ever arrest him.

All I was saying is, someone can be racist and mentally ill.

But honestly, if someone shouldn't label him as a psychopath because it's too soon to tell, isn't it too soon to tell if he is racist? The 911 tape of the alleged slur hasn't yet been deciphered, right?
We really won't know until it all plays out, so either way we are all speculating...

i don't know or care if he's mentally ill or not. i was just saying it has no real bearing on how he (in theory) would be handled by the CJ system.

I don't think it's too premature to call Zimmerman a racist or call this entire situation a racial issue. Regardless of the alleged racial slurs, he still committed racial profiling, believes in negative stereotypes about black people, and we know for a fact if the races were reversed a black man doing this to a white kid would be in jail or dead. I'm not sure what else they're speculating he said on the rapes, but I just believe that anything else that comes out at this point would add even more insult to injury.

And I still don't believe he's mentally ill.

And I said my opinion was that I couldn't make that call. I never said in ANY of my posts that others shouldn't label him as anything. I specifically asked if you ladies thought he was really a psychopath or not and I was looking for actual answers. As I mentioned sometimes people use terms like "insane", "psycho", "psychotic", "nuts", etc to convey the irritation with how a person is acting or has acted. You answered why you said it and I gave why I couldn't. It wasn't any sort of condemnation of what you said at all...because I just don't know one way or the other. I didn't major in Psychology like you did..I majored in Sociology. And frankly, in college I was and still am MUCH more interested in Comparative Religions and should have majored in that..not minored in it.

I think Zimmerman had racist views because of the neighborhood account of him going from door to door asking about "young black guys that don't look like they belong". I'm not sure how else it is for me to take that..besides that it is a racist view. Not to mention it seemed on the 911 tape he got very over zealous about following this young black guy once he realized that he was indeed black. So from that aspect..I don't need to listen to a tape of him saying "effin c**ns" to comprehend..sure he had some racist views about black guys. But maybe that's a wrong view to have ? Maybe I'm being to emotional about the racial aspect ? IDK.

I like to categorize every one as racist until proven innocent.

That's just me. I've been surprised way too many times by what comes out of "friends" or classmates or college students mouths when a POC is not around, because they assume that I don't count. So I decided to just assume, until proven otherwise.

and just because one black guy said he was a cool dude, don't mean ****, just like when someone says something racist and gets called out on it and then they're like "but my friend is black" SO.

Me too. She and Cato are the only ones that looked exactly as I pictured them. I would have liked Tilda Swinton for Effie. All of the contestants from RuPaul's drag race could have played the stylists lol. For Haymitch, I had Paul Giamatti in mind.

I think some people cannot picture an African-American girl as sweet, and pure as the driven "white" snow. No one questioned why Cinna was black, as far as read in comments.
