I think that whether or not something is "offensive" is always going to be a matter of opinion. It's like sexual harassment in the work place. I can feel harassed without that being your intention. In this cases if there is a complaint that someone feels offended, I think it is important to address the offender and advise them that they cannot use that sort of language or whatever.

I don't understand why it's so hard for grown ass people to be respectful of one another.

But seriously...I always see things slipping past or not seeming fair to somebody. I mean I don't know..apparently other people have said racist things too.. I didn't even know about the Puerto Rican comment NEA mentioned (SMH). Heck, I didn't even know Wile had said some of the other stuff folks revealed.. I was like.. "whhhhhhhhut ?" when I read it.

Well some of it seeped in the carpet

but I was able to salvage most of it. In the spots where it had started to seep into the carpet, I just scraped my foot against it to get it on my feet. I wasn't about to let it go to waste. I also put some of it on my hair.

It was part of the old SIIDY thread that went up in smoke.

I hate to see sienna40 go too. But I respect her decision, which is based on her personal convictions. A lot of folks huff and puff, but they ain't really about it. We'll see how it (addressing the mods) all pans out.

I'm giving them 3 business days to let me know if they are seriously going to change things or not. Like you I think thats fair but if they don't then I know what the deal is. Inaction speaks loudly. Around 2006 there was a mass exodus of black posters (including me) that left the site because of inconsistant moderation and the fact that posters were posting veiled and not so veiled racist remarks that were allowed to remain while black posters were told to stop being "bullies" and mean (sound familiar?). During this time, there were really no other message boards dedicated to natural hair except NP.com and many of us had left there prior to coming to NC.com because of the cenorship and issues with "having defined curls". There was an undertone that discouraged people that had curls from talking about defining them. So those of us that left started a new board called Happy Curls. It thrived for a few years and then slowed died out around 2009-10ish.

Around that time is when I started back lurking here. I lurked for a while and I really didn't start posting back on NC.com regularly until around 2010. I actually started back posting because it seemed the atomosphere had changed a lot...there wasn't many issues with the racist posts and veiled comments and such and I actually thought that since a certain group of white posters left in protest around the same time as the exodus that the site had changed. As of lately, that has all been called into question yet again.

I can only speak for myself, but NC.com is where I come to shoot the ****. I like the posters in 4a and a few in nonhair and when I'm at work and I get tired of looking at chemical equations and toxicology reports, this is where I come to get my mental coffee break. Initally I used to order products from curlmart because it was easier than ordering from multiple sites that were not secure, but I long ago stopped ordering through curlmart because of the high shipping costs. After the exodus in 2006, I dayum sure wasn't giving curlmart any of my money.

So now here we are today. At this point for me, I could give a dayum about Wiley's comment or RCW posting it in her siggy. I'm used to dealing with overt and covert racism on a daily basis, so I'd rather know where I stand with a person on the issue of race. Wiley's made it clear where she stands, so I know how to treat her accordingly...no more no less. Ban her, don't ban her...makes me no nevermind. I usually can't understand the babble she posts anyway and I don't have the time or patience to decode the ish so its just another poster I can breeze on by when I'm reading.

What concerns me and what prompted my inital post was the return to inconsistant moderation and the claim/assertion by the mods that black posters are "meanies and bullies" and are constantly being told to "play nice" because some people like to twist things and play the victim. The fact that I've seen several of you post about not feeling welcome in other sections of the board bothers me because you should feel welcome everywhere here....espcially since 75% of the dayum ads are directed at you...**** we're the revenue generators around here.

NC.com blew up when more and more black women decided to go natural and began using the net for information/resources. NP.com can be mad intimidating espically for someone that hasn't taken off the mental shackles of "good hair" and are only interested in wearing thier hair natural if it looks a certain way (i.e with definable/visible curls). Hence the success of this site and its sister sites.

I see the writing on the wall and it seems that at least on NC.com, history does indeed repeat itself. The issues with moderation continue. Black posters are still accused of being mean and bullies even when it is CLEAR that other posters are the agressors and initiated any conflict. I know that Gretchen has asked for suggestions on how to make the site better and I fully plan to send some to her (and I encourage the rest of you to do the same), and I know it will take time to implement any changes. I don't know if those suggestions will help...I don't know if thing will change. I'm not even so sure I have the patience to even wait and see what will happen to be honest.
