This looks more like a type 3 than a 4.

I always thought of type 3 hair as curls bigger than pencils.

I agree with you. Hair can appear to be one or the other at different times & with different products, & also depending on it's condition. Here's a photo of mine to add to the confusion. When I did the BC in 2009 my hair didn't look like this. I'd had curly perms for 28 yrs & had a headful of scab hair that would not obey any product. KinkyCurly did not work & I gave Knot Today a bad review here. Carols' Daughter & Qhemet worked so so. After 2 yrs of ayuvedic oils,natural products, extreme pampering, & trimming off scab hair every few months the texture went back to normal & I grew a lot of little curls. My hair looks like this with KinkyCurly & now Knot Today works wonderfully. Soaking wet it can look like this but with less organized spiral curls but it does have a definite curl pattern.It also makes a difference what shampoo/condish I use. When I tried the Mane & Tail shampoos/conditioners everyone raved about, my hair hated them & I wound up with a wild, dry,wiry feeling, tangled up mess that bore little resemblance to the photo & was hard to detangle.Now Qhemet & Carol's Daughter work waaaay better than they did 2 yrs ago now that scab hair is gone. I just say my hair's type 4 & call it a day !! What do you call it?
I think there are so many hair variations you can go mad trying to classify them & then you might find out something for your "type" doesn't work but one from another "type" does !

:/ My hair doesn't hold a curl that well. It doesn't napp, but it doesn't keep a curl either. It doesn't really do much of anything. But this is it at 3 months. 4a?

Yes, only my curls never get that defined -_-; my hair really doesn't do much of anything. It's always soft and I've never had issues with napping or tangling before, but it doesnt keep a curl either.

i'm no curl or hair expert. but maybe there's a possibility that your curls are bigger than you think they are. if you say they aren't really showing. i can definitely see them on the top on your head though are you considering letting your hair grow out any longer? they'll probably looked more developed when they grow out a little more.

Hello y'all! *waves* i've been natural for nearly 2years now and i still dont know what my hairtype is. Neither do i know what my porosity is nor my strand size :/. i feel like such a n00b eventhough i've been natural for a while now. Ive been debating between 4b or 4a, but the longer it gets the more it resembles 3c (though i still believe that im 4a) i've got tons of pictures for you guys and i appricitate you guys input and advice!
My dry hair in a lazy puff. (untill a couple of weeks a go i discovered that my hair was thirsty and REALLY dry)

My ashy scalp

rocking a 4day old dry braid out

My shrunken fro, 30minutes after i washed it.

close up

My bun..ish

My finally moisturised hair thanks to all you guy's tips and advice on the forum!!! i transitioned when i was 16 and for the first time in two years my hair is truely healthy! THANK YOU!!
 (i sprayed it with water,glycerin and advocado oil)

@JosseyPossey...I see a 4a...I think it may look 4b because your hair was just dry.
@ms. tracy...you take me for a 4a too
Im not seeing 4b for either of ya'll...it is my understanding that 4b hair doesn't curl/coil even with product/conditioner
