Default humidity hair routine

I will be spending my first summer in new york and I am wondering how I should change my product routine. I have already read some stuff on dew points and humectants/anti-humectants, but I still need some things clarified.

1. Should I use a gel? strong or soft hold?
2. Should I stay away from glycerin?
3. Does your hair become more protein sensitive?

I have 4a/b fine hair. Currently I use SM restorative conditioner and/or SM cul smoothie. Depending on my mood I will seal my hair with olive oil and/or castor oil. I will also use royal crown on sides of my head (my hair is shorter on the sides and longer at the top), but i'm trying to find a replacement without petroleum.
