I figure if I'm going to take the extra time to do a wet-set style, it needs to look like I did something, lol.

Another thing--wet twists on my hair look a hot mess b/c of the shrinkage and the mixed curl size in various sections. So if I twist my hair, I usually blow out the hair and do smaller twists to wear them as the style. I almost never wear the resulting twist-out (my hair is usually pretty dirty by that point anyway, so it'd be kinda gross to do that ).

Also I prefer to do braid-outs because I hated them with a fiery vengeance back when I had relaxed hair, so the challenge of mastering them makes me like them now.
This is how my hair is with wet twists. Since the twists aren't tight like the plaits my hair curls up withing the twists so it just ends up looking like a WnG to me. Plus I don't like the shrinkage. I need to practice my flat twisting skills because I'm thinking I can get my dry twist out look on wet hair this way. I'm too lazy and don't want to be bothered with practicing though.

Word. Speaking of lazy, have you ever seen Dickey's [of Hair Rules] method for the twist out? Blow out and/or flat iron and then flat twisting with hair cream so the hair is damp enough to set the hair w/o the shrinkage? That's way too much work for me lol (though if you're hair is already straight it makes sense, but I wouldn't do all that just for a 4 day twist out).

My freshly washed twist outs also look just like my wash and go. So I really dont see it as manipulating my curl pattern.

I agree with adthomas. I don't do many twist-outs because they look basically the same as when I do a wash-n-go.

When I finally learned how to cornrow about 2 years ago, that was all she wrote. I will do cornrows or plaits to achieve the look I want.

I am on Team Braidout!

my braidouts suck

I have yet to have a successful one. I cant keep the braids in long enough unless I do it on Friday and plan to stay in the house the whole weekend.

My hair takes forever to dry.

I have a slight better chance if i do them on dry hair but I WnG a lot so .... I slightly gave up lol

This. Since I've gotten some length, my hair takes longer to dry especially if it's in braids. So I had to switch my wash day to Thursday morning so it can set the rest of Thurs and alllll of Friday just in case something is going on for the weekend and I want a good fresh braid out.

Last night I did twists and pulled the twists up in 3 pony tails then tied them up midway....similar to banding. Although it still didn't look the same as my dry twist outs it did stretch them good. It was a different look that I was happy with. If I'm in a rush and can't do braids I'll definitely do twist outs like this.

All my braid outs are either done after Curlformers or on old twist outs. That way I can mist my dry hair with just a little water then shea on the ends. Turns out great. But I cant do chucky twists or braids because they wont hold. Make braids to small and they are tedious to take down

What I do for my braid outs is sit under the dryer for 15-20 min and then air dry the rest of the way overnight and then undo them in the a.m. So far that's worked out well. Or if I have a lazy day I will leave them in for one full day extra and then unravel. Ex: braid wet hair sat night, unravel mon morning.

If I had to wait longer than that for good results I would just use a diluted setting lotion and sit under the dryer longer (like I did for flexirod sets when transitioning). Also for those who have trouble with all kinds of wet-sets: the wetter the hair, the better the results (once completely dry). hth

Twist outs. My hair is(assuming) too fine and not dense enough for braidouts to look decent. I can do variations on the twist outs and it be nice though. I'm trying naptural85's twist routine to see if it works better.

I do both. I do twistouts when I am looking for a defined curly pattern, and if I have the time and patience I go for three-strand twist outs.

I do braidouts when I just want a wavy pattern, and since I only need four to seven braids to achieve what I want it doesn't take that long.

I wish I could cornrow or flat twist...I love the results of those on people!

I really didnt kno u could twist 3 strands without making a braid..gotta try..

@artemis513 I tried a braidout on blownout hair w product and it dropped within the day.. I think maybe bcuz during my washing I was planning on straightening..
so did an oil rinse which kept my hair ridiculously soft for days plus I did my blowout w the TT and it made for much straighter softer hair than expected.. So evn after doing a braidout on that it really wasnt trying to go any other way..maybe if I did a twistout it would of held up?? Idk really think it would of mattered until that super softness subsided

Yeah, you really have to look at styling on blown-out hair a little differently because of how hair "works" in general. Blowing out the hair sets certain bonds in a specific position, bonds that would otherwise be broken if they were wet. So the styler you choose has to have more hold compared to if the hair is wet. And you have to give it more time to set sometimes even though the hair is dry (not wet). It's all about product trial and error (selection and amount used).

I always wear braid-outs. I like them because of the pretty crinkle pattern, nice stretch, less tangling and easier wash day detangling sessions (as compared to twist-outs).

I do my braid-outs on freshly washed, t-shirt blotted, damp hair. I do 16 braids total. I section, smooth on my leave-in conditioners (Alba Botanica Leave-In Conditioner + SM Curl and Style Milk), braid and twist the last inch. Then, I seal the ends of my braids and my hairline with castor oil. After that, I cover my hair with a satin scarf + satin bonnet combo, wear a turban hat (from a BSS), let my hair air-dry for a day. Finally, I unravel, separate and fluff. My braid-outs last for ~5 days.

Your hair looks AMAZING on this....and I love the touch of color. Was this henna?

I do twist outs, just because my ends are so fragile and braiding caused me breakage for some reason.

Yes, and I definitely recommend giving it a try. On my hair it results in better definition than a regular twist out.

It's a twist with three strands wound instead of two.
