Default PSA: Black don't crack...

But it does freckle. I now have a dusting all over my nose. Two days in the Hotlanta sun did me in.

Wear some sort of sunscreen, folks!

This has been a public service announcement for colored girls who have considered going without when they thought the melanin was enough.

Now back to your regularly scheduled hair programming....

In my family we either end up with freckles or moles. My older sister has a face covered in randomly placed tiny moles. I guess I will end up with the freckles.

Nothing against either, just don't know if I like them on me. Plus didn't realize I was out in the sun that much. Oh well.

Lol! I don't have freckles, but my grandmother, uncle, and auntie has freckles. Many of my relatives on my motherMs side has freckles. Non the less I always make sure I wear sunscreen, for that extra protection we all need especially in the summer time.

I always wear sunscreen because I burn very easy. It's crazy but it never fails...more than 3 hours outside in the summer and I'm peeling like crazy. I even burn with sunscreen at the beach if I'm not careful and reapply often enough. Im talking dang near 1st- 2nd degree burns that require medical treatment. Who burns wearing SPF 50?!? The dark skinned black chick..that's who.

This thread is too funny! My mom had freckles and moles. My dad would make her mad by calling them "frog dots"!! Cracked me up and she did bless me with moles but no freckles!

For the longest time I used to think "black don't burn". I've seen my dad get sunburned - he's light-skinned w/ freckles, but I thought that was just as an exception.

I took after my dad - I'm light-skinned w/ freckles, but for the longest time I NEVER burned - hence my "black don't burn" belief. As a kid I'd spend most of my summers outside (did they even make sunscreen back then?), but sun protection was never a thought.

But then I became an adult and started burning. I'm finding the older I get the easier/quicker I burn. I think (in my case) it's because I spend so much time indoors that when I do get some sun, it's a shock to my skin. (I spent part of my honeymoon 6 years ago feeling like this -> and )

Thanks for this thread, however. It's a kick in the pants to make sunscreen a higher priority, especially since I have a 2-y.o. When I put it on him, I should also take time to put it on me.

I have freckles but no one can tell unless they're all up on my face. There's so few I might as well not point them out but I can't help but love them. Haha. I also have moles, like my grandma and her mom did.

What's funny about this is that I have a painful sunburn on my right shoulder from sitting in the sun at my boyfriend's graduation yesterday. I'm so mad too because I almost NEVER leave the house without some kind of SFP lotion on...except for yesterday. Thanks, VA, for never bothering to have a SPRING.

OH. And is it just me or is it really annoying that the usual SPF in body lotions is 15? I mean can I at LEAST get a 30?

And what's up with SPF 100 being 11 dollars for a small tube? They want us to die, ya'll. Makes no sense.

That is very true, I get so dark, its bad and I get tiny mole and freckled. I didn't know the tiny mole was caused by the sun, I woke up one summer and notice it, but mow that I know I will be wearing sunblock!!!

I'm allergic to sunscreen. Last summer I touched someone who recently applied sunscreen that had not fully dried and I ended up in the hospital. I hate that almost every body lotion, cosmetic, and hair product contains sunscreen these days.

I never burned before, but I tan easily. I'm sure I'm at risk for a lot of skin disorders but the fam doc/dermetologist unable to find a solution aside from covering up. But for those who can wear sunscreen, cover up! Darker skin only provides a very slight protection really.

I used to think that black didn't burn either. I'm fair-skinned and I rarely burned as a child, even though I spent a lot of time outside. I didn't experience a sunburn until my 20's and it wasn't something I wanted to ever repeat. My skin peeled for a couple of weeks. It was painful to sit or lay down. Now I use a sunscreen with a minimal of SPF 30.

I never burned as a kid either but boy would I tan!! I would be like 3/4 shades darker by the end of summer thanks to the chlorine in the pools and hot GA and FL sun. My lighter skinned cousins would burn and peel but I just tanned and baked to a nice lobster red hue...lol.

I never experienced a sunburn until college and it was so painful that I had blisters and had to go to the ER. Since then my tolerance for full sun has gotten lower and lower (right along with my vitamin D levels). I LOVE sunbathing and just being outdoors in the summer so I slather on sunscreen and wear hats which do help but when I'm laying out and don't reapply the sunscreen every 2 hours or after getting out the pool then I'm all flaky and peeling and sore.

I wonder if it's because as adults we spend so much time indoors that our tolerance for the sun is getting lower or if is something else...

Your freckles may be more noticeable than you think. I thought mine werent prominent because i dont have nearly what most of my family has. But one day I was complaining to a coworker who was standing a few feet away about a zit and she goes "Don't worry I cant see it nearly as well as those freckles in your face." So my days of freckle denial was over. LOL

If that happened I'd be so happy. I love freckles.

I don't think I burn(my skin doesn't hurt after being in the sun) but I tan and have a reddish undertone.

I love freckles on people who you wouldn't really expect to have freckles. I have freckles on my nose and cheeks and they get more prominent in the summer.

I don't really burn. I'll tan...eventually. But it will take twice or three times as long for me to tan a shade darker than it would for someone else. I guess that's a good thing that my skin is sun resistant? The only part that will burn are my shoulders (just a slight reddening) or my cheeks (slight reddening). I've never had a "bad sunburn" before with blisters and all that.
