5 Things a Stylist Should NEVER Say to a Curly Client
We're doing an article on some of the things a stylist should never say to a curly client. We'd love to hear your ideas.

When I come to your shop, don't stare at my head like there's something alive and disgusting sitting on top of it.

"Your hair texture is very coarse.. I suggest a silkener, texturizer, relaxer, or keratin treatment." Don't offer the client chemical services to alter their curls or kinks that they didn't specifically ask to have done first. I just think doing that suggest automatically that their hair is unacceptable in it's natural state..which is hurtful.

Exactly. This is part of reason I havent been to a salon in more than 3 years. If a stylist were to even mention any kind of chemical treatment to me without me inquiring first I might not be so nice. And I dont like not being nice so I dont go. I trim my own hair and if I decide to get a major cut I have relatives who can do it.

Heres a good one.. dont just stare at my hair and say well... "we can take about two inches off"... let me stop you right there.. pick up those snips and ill take your hand off...some stylists are so intimidated by natural hair especially in a wash n go they immediately assume hell is breaking loose..and stylists already treat a trim like its sheep shearing time...

I totally agree! It is rude and offensive to automatically assume someone wants straight hair just because their hair is curly/coily/etc. It's like if a red-head client came in, and the stylist--without provocation-- immediately suggested they go blond!

To be fair if you are transitioning I would ask that too as a stylist.

+1 the same goes for heat to alter curls or kinks if they didn't ask first. I hate when they say, "You should at least let me flat iron it so you can see how long it is." Personally I don't care how long it is straight if I never wear it straight.

"I only work with customers with x-y-z type hair. Maybe you would have better luck with someone who has your type of curly hair."

I think this is a good thing. Gives you warning to run before they jack your hair up.
A few people have admired my twistout hair and ask me if I do twists for other people. I said no and they told me stylists around here refuse to do it. Odd to me since it would be quicker than braiding.

1. You sure you never had a relaxer?
2. Oops!
3. Your hair is too nappy for...
4. I'm going to get marcel on you.
5. (Saying nothing but assuming you want your hair bone straight).

In this day of natural love, I'd let the client ask for it.
I didn't go to stylist relaxed. Not going as a natural. Too many horror stories. >_<

Me too, cuz I don't want you to try and "fake it till you make it", on my head. Don't be proud. Let me know you have no idea what to do, so I can go to someone who does.

"You'd look great with a blowout."
"Your hair is uneven; one side waves differently than the other."
"The last stylist did a bad job."
"Why do you want to wear it wavy?"
"How do you feel about adding some blonde streaks?"
and the absolute worst thing to say, imo, is:
"Now which one of us is the expert here, you or me?"

"I'm going to comb this out to see you pattern better (dry)."
So breaking up my curl pattern is going to show you my curl pattern?

A lot of these things sound so horrible! I hope I never have to deal with any of those. I've had (dominican) stylist try to talk me out of a cut, I should just trim and let it grow longer. I've had multiple stylist (and many other people) talk me out of dying my hair, because it is already a 'color' (med brown w/ natural highlights). the last time I got my hair pressed (by a black woman) she was upset, look at the lady in the next chair she is about get her hair dyed your color and bought 2 packs of weave that is the same texture as yours, and here you come asking me to press it out and clip off some length. Lol I guess my story offers some hope for others. I've never had a bad experience.

Looking back I can only think of one or two hairdressers I had whose hair looked good to me. They had a short old Toni braxton style. Everyone else's head looked a mess but I grew up hearing stylists spent so much time doing other people's hair they dont like to fool with their own.

I must respectfully disagree. I'd much rather someone admit to me they're not capable of doing my hair than for them to attempt to do it, screw it up, and me walk out with jacked up hair.
