Hello Ladies!

I don't post very often and I mostly lurk, but I've decided to make myself known! I've recently decided that I want to color my hair. (I'm aware that there is a section dedicated to coloring, but that section is dry :/) I've recently finished my transition to natural hair (started in 2010) and I have a decent length to work with. I just wanted to make things a little more fun! I know what I want to do, just not how to do it.

I don't want to color my whole head. I want the hair in back, the hair on the lower layer (so it's underneath, if that makes sense), and the bang area to be colored. I want to go lighter to maybe honey blonde or slightly lighter than that. I want to do it myself instead of going to a salon to save money (and salons make me nervous because you never know what you're gonna get with people you don't know!). I'm not sure if I should go semi-permanent or permanent.

My hair is sandy-brown naturally and I have never colored my hair before. My hair has normal porosity as well.

What kind of box-kits do you guys recommend? What tips should I keep in mind? Anything else I should be aware of? I apologize for the lengthy post, but I just need to be steered in the right direction. Like I said earlier, I know what I want to do just not how to do it.

I dyed my bangs hot pink (there is more in the tags about the process and dyes) in 2010 but I've never done the bottom of my hair before. I would invest in a good protein deep conditioner to deal with the fact dyed hair (especially bleached hair!) is even more fragile.

If you're only doing a section, take time to really check your parting and how straight it is. It will make the process easier because you won't have to go back and color sections that you accidently missed. I would recommend having someone you trust do the parting and dye application in the back for you because they can actually see the layers better (unless you have eyes back there...)

Tbh, it looks more bronze than red to me. Perhaps it needs to settle for a few days.

In 6 weeks I might go and get it professionally colored. Id like a nice hot summer look

I'm seriously contemplating getting light brown highlights for my birthday. I had them years ago and they were great but my hair was so dry. I think ive got enough "moisturizing and protein rich" products to ward off that dryness.

I've got to research somemore though. Did you do a protein treatment or DC before hand or afterwards?

Nope I didnt do jack diddly squat other than use the conditioner it came with.

Hair is nice and soft though.

This sunday I will do a protein/moisture steam treatment

I don’t know, I’m kind of anti boxed dye. I prefer to go to sally’s and buy the color or bleach, and developer of my choice. I have more control this way because I can choose the volume of the developer, the brand, the type (liquid or crème) and I can mix the colors to get the shade that I want. If you feel uncomfortable doing it this way and insist upon using boxed dye, I’ve heard good things about clairol's textures and tones. I think they have two or three blonde shades to choose from. Since your hair is darker than your desired shade, you have to use permanent color or bleach. Semi permanent color cannot lighten the hair. Semi perms are basically just rinses and veggie dyes like clairol’s beautiful collection, jazzing, and manic panic. They do not alter the structure of the hair in anyway, and they wash out completely over time. If your hair is porous and drastically lighter than the semi perm you use, it may leave behind a bit of a stain on the hair after it washes out, but it won’t be vibrant. Demi perms are deposit only colors that require the use of a developer (usually 10 vol. or lower), are ammonia free, and last longer than a semi, but are not permanent. Like semi perms, they cannot lighten the hair, but they can alter the tone, and/or make it darker. They also wash out, but last longer and are good for hair that is too damaged for permanent color. Many boxed dyes like natural instincts, and herbashine fall into this category even though they are sometimes incorrectly labeled as semi permanent. Permanent colors contain ammonia or an ammonia substitute, and are mixed with a developer to permanently change the color of the hair. This is the only type of dye that can lighten the hair. If you want to go lighter you have to use a permanent color, or a lightener (bleach).

If you do decide to color your hair, just be sure to keep it moisturized, increase the amount of protein that you use, and reduce or eliminate heat. I keep these things in mind and I have yet to experience any sort of setback despite bleaching and dying my hair unnatural colors.

some off my ends are lighter because i previously dyed some parts with cherrywood last year.

its been 2 months, thinking about dye-ing the front again.

Ive about 2 almost 3 inches inches of new growth, my hair grows super fast, its just Im lazy with retaining it lol/

i used textures & tones before. it did absolutely nothing. it was like i poured colored water on my hair. my fave box color for blondes is revlon's color silk. their blondes really dye blonde.

my fave box color for color (lol) is creme of nature. they never, ever fade. i've dyed and bleached my hair many times without any issues but i've been doing this for years.

op, you may want to go to a colorist and get your hair professionally done.

I use to dye my hair several times a year but for the past yr I've stuck with my natural color, just recently I dyed it black but now I want something different, maybe a honey blonde but I'm afraid it won't look right on me. Suggestions?
