Question..

I see lots of naturals applying products by combing or raking the products through their hair and getting great results!!

Well, is there anyone out there like ME who can't do this because their hair tangles back up as SOON as the conditioner is rinsed out?!!

Or is my hair just... Odd... (Old school translation="BAD HAIR")

I mean, it looks ok, but.. I don't know. Just wondering.

For my wng's I make sure to use a rich slippery leave-in (I allow it to "sink"), then I spray each section with water mixed with oil. I use a modified praying hands, downward smoothing technique to apply gel to small/medium sized sections. I make sure to pay close attention to my roots....smoothing from the root to the ends...making sure to saturate to the ends. By doing this my hair naturally clumps and I dry with very few tangles and the style lasts for days.

If I combed/brushed product in my hair I'd just get a big frizz ball. I've used the praying hands method (and need to try that one again) but right now I'm scrunching product in my hair--but I don't get perfect curls this way, which is fine with me. So no, your hair isn't odd, it just can't do what another person's hair can.
I never do that that would be too much manipulation. I'd get more tangles and breakage than ever.
4c wiry thick nappy low porosity hair
Poo: SM black soap
Rise out/Detangler:
DC/: Avocado+ oil + Honey
Spritz: Oyin J&B
Moisturizer: OH Dew
Sealant:BSP/Bask tapioca cream
I don't get as much clumping. When it comes to styling my hair I learned not to get discouraged when something doesn't work that most others swear by. My hair just doesn't like it. If your hair can't do it it just can't do it. It doesn't make it "bad" by any means.
3c/4aish, high porosity, fine strands, medium density cottony curls.

I'm not obsessed: I just LOVE my hair!!

I only comb during detangling, and I smooth products in sections using my palms. Combing and raking products yields more frizz and shrinkage.

I was wondering. I get great definition and everything- well it's still frizzy, but defined. I was wondering because I want to try different products, but I'll see naturals- some with looser curls, some with the same 4a's I have and they are shingling and raking away! Which makes me wonder if I can even USE the product because I can't rake!! LoL!

And I agree, I think that's too much manipulation as well. My w n g is basically a protective style because I comb once a week and just refresh daily.

I guess I was feeling funky that day looking at all them Tubers raking away. I'm the FIRST to say not everyone is the same and do what works. Honestly I don't think I NEED to rake. My tight curls are easily defined and hold.

STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT NOTHING, JENNIFER!!!

This is what I do, I try not to use a comb and so I rake with my fingers instead. It also helps me to separate my curls while I am putting in my gel. Otherwise if I just smooth my products in my curls get all bunched together with more product outside and not enough inside. I like my curls to be able to move individually, and smoothing them together prevents this.
I should also mention though that my hair is wavy rather than curly while wet, so they do not catch up on eachother while I am styling my hair. If you have more curly/coily while wet then it may not work well.
I had to take a long look at what I was complaining about.. And realized I was being silly.. I am in a pretty good position actually.. Sure, raking my products in would tear my hair out, but I don't actually NEED to shingle... I can do the flip method.. Which is flip upside down (your head, that is not your whole body.) Get my underside good with gel, then flip back and get the top.. Maybe section the middle of all that to make sure I get the inside.. And my curls are actually pretty much fine..

So basically I was complaining because I don't have to spend 2 hours shingling product, and twirling my curls to get them to form... That is a blessing.. Not a problem...

Sometimes... I think I'm a bit of an idiot..
