DC before shampooing?

Anybody do this? If so, does it work for you?

I "accidently" did this last week when I went swimming with the family.

I wet my hair down then applied generous amounts of conditioner and oil to my hair; slapped on my swim cap and went swimming.

Later when I went to detangle before shampooing, my hair hardly had any tangles and the few that were there just melted away. I jumped in the shower and shampooed and my hair and scalp felt incredible; clean yet not stripped and moisturized.

Out of habit, I did a DC after I shampooed but thinking back, I really didn't need it. I think I could have just applied my LI and homemade FSG and thrown my TST (two strand twists) in and been done in record time.

Hmmmm, for those of you who do this on the regular are there any ill effects over the course of time? Tell me about your experiences (if any) with this?

Thanks!

Sooo, I use B.A.S.K Cacao Bark DC on dry hair (I do this every month or so...I'm not consistent). I cover and sleep with it then wash it out the next morning. My hair feels so good afterwards. Not stripped or anything.
Also, I use oils for my weekly pre-poo's during the summer which helps keep my hair moisturized when I do wng's. Same process add the oil at nite, cover and rinse the next morning. If I'm feeling fancy, I will pull out the steamer for 20-30min then cover and go to sleep.

ChicagoKinks, I was thinking the same thing you were about what I described not being a prepoo because I used conditioner and oil. I always thought a prepoo involved oils only? Anytime conditioner and oils are mixed together whether I do it before or after I shampoo, I always thought that was a DC treament?

Anyhoo, for 2 (going on 3) years I have DC'd weekly after shampooing my tresses. With this recent "accidental" discovery of applying conditioner and oil to my hair before shampooing I found that my hair really responded well and seems to like that slight change in the order of things.

So how long have you DC'd before shampooing? Have you ever DC'd after shampooing? Does your hair seem to respond better to one over the other? Over time, does your hair start to feel dryer with shampooing after the DC?

when i pre poo

I use conditioner and oil

Deep conditioners

oil

moisturizers

Anything that caters to keeping moisture or protein in my hair.

so for me , i dont say deep conditioning , i say prepoo
I rarely deep condition after shampoo

What I usually do is steam in a deep conditioner if my hair isnt the best, but every wash day i pre poo, and just pick something out the stash. it doesnt have to be oil only for myself
Lol, maybe we should call it Pre-DC.

I "try" and Pre-DC with conditioner monthly (I'm not consistent thought). I Pre-Poo (oil only) weekly as I re-do my wng's weekly.

I rarely DC after because I'm lazy so I use rich conditioners as my leave in...I normally use conditioners that are advertised as rinse outs like CJ Curl Rehab, KBN Shea Aloe, Tresemme Naturals and many more lol.

I like to do it this way rather than after cleansing. I usually use SM purification masque, coconut oil, or both either over night or for a few hours before hand. It's just easier for me since I won't have to jump back in the shower to rinse out a DC and my hair will be detangled so washing will be faster.

I think it is actually named after the order in the process. Pre-Poo is not something I do regularly, but since I was out in the Florida heat yesterday, and my hair is dr-dr-dry, I decided to do one before washing today. I have a dc mix of 11 conditioners, argan, and macadamia oil. I love it but it contains at least 4 conditioners I won't repurchase, but are good in the mix.

This is also my DC Mix. Does anyone pre-poo and DC with the same mix?

But I suppose any treatment involving any product applied to your hair before you actually shampoo the hair could be considered a prepoo...

I prepoo with just oils typically but I have used oil and conditioner. Prepooing helps me reduce tangles that shampooing tends to cause.

I do it sometimes, for the past cpl of weeks thats all ive been doing lately though. Its convenient when its late on wash day and I know I need to get a dc in..
I usually just pre poo dry hair with oil, then shampoo & dc. But when I dc I also dampen w warm water and add conditioner.
Ill put it on.. do what I gotta do then wash. Only con is that I find it needs to sit longer than usual to give me the softness a normal dc would, and if my hair is too dirty/producty it doesnt give me the best results. Otherwise its great
I did it by accident about a year ago too, and loved it. So I dc every week before I cleanse. I still consider it a dc cause I am deep conditioning. I put mu dc on dry hair, put on a plastic cap and a beanie. then go about my evening routine(make dinner, give baths etc). Then I detangle( this has become a breeze sice I started doing it this way) and rinse. Once a month, I include a betonite clay cleanse, but other than that I'm done. I have just put on oils and detangled, then jumped right in the shower - that's what I would consider a pre poo, no matter if it was oil or conditioner- but it was just to help with tangles. IMHO a dc is used to restore moisture into the core of your hair. I don't see them as the same, but what's in a name?

When I first became natural and used AOHC for the first time about 6 months in, here is what the instructions state:

For deep conditioning: Apply to dry hair and distribute from scalp to ends. Leave on for 15 minutes, then shampoo and condition hair as usual.

I have been doing that every since with any conditioner have to use as a DC.
