The Best Deep Conditioner

I just wanted to run a poll of what people prefer as a holy grail protein free/light protein deep conditioner. I have spent close to a year looking for a staple/HG deep conditioner and it seems each time I think I have found it, something goes wrong. So far Redken's Smooth Down Butter Treat and Curl Junkie Deep Fix came close to holding that spot in my arsenal, but one was discontinued and the other became hard for me to use over time. The honey in Deep Fix began to glue my curls together causing difficulty during the detangling process. It makes me sad because I really loved them both. Right now I have been testing Matrix and Aveda and while they give my hair a slick manageable feeling they aren't exactly rich conditioners per se so they don't give my hair that gentle weighed down feeling I get from butters and oils. I was wondering should I just toss in the towel and start making my own doctored conditioner concoctions or if there were some options that may save me the trouble.

The lines I have been looking at intently are
B.A.S.K.,
Sweet Nature by Eddie,
Brown Butter Beauty,
Pura Body Naturals,
and Camille Rose Naturals.

There is just soooo muuuuch out there, getting a few opinions would be very helpful.

I think there is already a thread on this. But anyhoo, I too have had trouble finding a good deep conditioner because I have highly porous hair. Nothing in the natural care lines work for me. So I have decided to go back to conditioners that have lots of conditioning agents in them and are not necessarily CG friendly, ie cones are ok. BTMS alone will not cut it for me. Now I have tried BBB babassu conditioner and it did work in the past but lately it has been a failure and I think that the pH of the conditioner is too high for me. I tested it and it was 6.5. I need the pH to be 3.5-5.5 and no higher. I suspect that she isn't pH testing her products anymore. As to BASK, high porosity ladies have said that her conditioners did nothing for them. I think it's the pH. I had no luck with Pura boday naturals, pH problem again. HTH

I've tried quite a few.

HG Grails deep conditioner

Karen's body beautiful deep conditioner
Koils by nature deep conditioner
Oyin handmade honey hemp
Curl junkie curl rehab
Darcy's botanical pumpkin seed conditioner
Sometimes I like to mix oils and/or honey with regular conditioner
I don't buy Bask yam nectar often, however when I use it with regular conditioner

Yeah I do have yet to try the Karen's Body Beautiful and quite a few people are a fan...I just might pick it up sometime.

HG deep conditioner for me is the Camille Rose Algae Renew Deep Conditioner. It's amazing! Makes my hair buttery soft. Very easy to over moisturize with it, though.

Hey, when you refer to KBB's deep conditioner, which one are you talking about? I don't remember one called specifically that.

I assumed it was the luscious locks hair masque. That one is notorious on the hair boards as far as I know. The only reason I haven't picked it up yet is because I was concerned about overconditioning. Oh and it is expensive for the amount you receive.

I love the Brown Butter Beauty, BUT my jar is pretty old and I havent tried my new jar yet (as far as any changes go)
For straight moisture (which I dont regularly do) Curl Junkie Curl Rehab has always made my hair feel amazing
Ii also like the Aubrey Organics conditioners (WC & GPB) layered w oil for an affordable dc. Which is what I usually do when I dont wanna use my BBB

I'm coarse, high porosity, prone to dryness (as we've discussed). My favourites after asking for suggestions on one of the other threads are the Curl Junkie Curl Rehab, Bee Mine Bee.U.Ti.Ful DC (I was actually quite surprised by this), my old dependable Aubrey Organics HSR: but I usually have to augment this with honey/agave and oils, or any random cocktail of conditioners I don't like on their own, supplemented with honey or agave (preferred) and olive oil. Oh, also the Shea Moisture Black Soap Purification masque deserves an honourable mention, but I tend to use this as a pre-poo.

secret_karma 05-04-2013 10:20 AM

My favorite is KBB Luscious Locks it has no protein though. For a light protein either Darcys pumpkin seed or Oyin are good. Next on my list to try is sdotbeauty dc, I hear nothing but good reviews of it.

Sistapopdemcurl 05-04-2013 10:46 AM

Bask beauty cacao bark is ok, but it is really good mix with the Yam nectar

SM black purification mask

Jessicurl weekly deep treatment was ok too.

ricotdorothy 05-04-2013 11:56 AM

You all are going to make me try Curl Rehab again lol. All I have to say is it had better have been a bad batch I tried out the last time lol. But yes, in the protein free category it seems to be number one for a lot of people.

ETA: @ Reeky, you know I think you may have point concerning balanced deep conditioners. Recently I have decided I don't necessarily need to do a deep treatment every week. This is because my hair has been holding moisture pretty well, it passes the stretch test pretty consistently and breakage has been at a minimum. Given this it may be time to incorporate balanced DC'S. Deep conditioners that can do moisture and protein at the same time.my issue is I really like them to do it at the same time, as in I don't like to have to do a separate moisturizing treatment. I am about to receive the BASK whiskey hair soak. We will see how that goes...

Sistapopdemcurl 05-04-2013 12:06 PM

Try to purchase it from aveyou.com, Curlmart (they have a20% sale now) and of course curl junkie.

ricotdorothy 05-04-2013 01:20 PM

I have been looking at open jars of curl rehab online and I am now convinced that I got a bad/possibly old batch. Next time I am ordering straight from the Curl Junkie site. It will probably be my next DC purchase. :icescream: I would like to give CJ another chance. I loved all their other things.

ETA: I got the Curl Rehab from the Curlmart sale just now, lol.

Naturelle Grow (from Etsy) treatments are great. I used the Chamomile and Burdock Root one today and it made my hair so soft.

Great ingredients, reasonably priced, reasonable and quick shipping!

Raquel28 05-04-2013 09:52 PM

HG Deep Conditioners/Treatments
Curl Rehab
Shea Moisture Purification Mask
Bask Vanilla Whiskey Hair Soak

Honorable Mentions
Darcy's Botanicals Pumpkin Seed
Any Conditioner mixed with Honey and Olive Oil

ebonyrose31626 05-05-2013 12:08 AM

My hair is low porosity and I've basically given up on finding a good moisturizing dc. I think most are just too thick. I want to try Kbb luscious locks but it's too expensive.
I tried the cj repair and my hair felt coated and not moisturized. I think it has shea butter and my hair hates shea butter.

I'm low porosity too and I had the same problem with curl junkie rehab cuz of the shea butter. The only conditioner with shea butter that works for me so far is shescentit honey rinse. That one and their avocado conditioner are really good and not too expensive.

Camille rose algae deep conditioner
KBB Lucious Locks
CJ Curl Rehab
Purabody Chocolate smoothie
AO GBP conditioner....it's balanced

Ogo'm 05-05-2013 07:59 AM

If you want something with the slightest touch of protein and with butters and oils in addition to conditioning agents, you have to try the Darcy's Pumpkin Seed conditioner. My only gripe with that product is it needs to container; it is too thick for the bottle it is in.
