I really need to be pointed in the right direction hair wise. I did my second big chop where I was cut completely bald by my husband on January 22, 2013. Here I am, product free and would like to know my hair type really bad. I also need guidance in taking care of my hair. I'm clueless!!I'm New Here and....-imageuploadedbycurltalk1379340630.571922.jpg

Welcome! Your hair looks 4b, is it wet in the picture? Whats your current hair regimen? Also, do you know your hair properties(porosity, density, fine/medium/coarse strands)? What products have you had success with and what has failed(just to get an idea of what your hair likes).

To me it looks more like 4a but it would be easier if u showed us hair wet at a stage where it is just half dry and not manipulated. I have 4a hair. I recommend u checked old youtubes by mahoganycurls something. She is the one who showed me that trick is to comb or fingercomb (even better) hair while it is soaking wet (with Conditioner or gel), shake hair (if it is long enough of course) and NOT touch while drying. Try my favorite Hawaiian Silky Curl Activator gel. Google it.

It looks 4a to me. If you just BC'd it might be a little while to see your true hair texture/pattern. It took me 11 months. My hair is completely different from when I BC'd.

Hey ladies!! Thankyou for the reply!!! I did the wash and go and then finger combed Eco styler in my hair today. I found that wrapping the hair around my finger while its wet and with gel made my curls clump better. I then shook my hair like crazy lol and this was the finish. I am new to buying products so I can't say too much about what my hair likes and doesn't like. All I've been doing is cowashing and using evoo or coconut oil. And gel when I want to define my curls. I just bought a leave in today. I'll tell you how it works for me! What's porosity??

The pic in the original post is my hair wet and without product. It had just been cowashed.

Hi, KinkyKynah; welcome to the site!

I wish I'd learned about porosity and other hair properties before I focused on my curl type since that's way more important when it comes to caring for your curls. It would have saved me so much time and money.

There's a great post at Live Curly Live Free about porosity and texture (you can scroll down to it) that will help you figure out about your hair. There's also a good porosity test on NaturallyCurly.

Once you figure out your properties, you can look at the posts under the high porosity section, medium porosity section, and low porosity section. The posts in each will have info on what products work best.

All the best to you!
