4a maybe 4b knots (pics included)

Hi all,
I thought I'd write to a forum before I did something drastic and cut all my hair off!
This may be a little long,
I'm a 4a maybe with 4b I have a defined small curl pattern that ranges from pen spring coils to pen sized curls with looser waves in front. My texture is cottony fine to medium strands but medium to dense hair, I've been hovering around collar bone length for at least a year.

My problem is knots, I've been natural always but wore short shaved hair for four months because of knots, no matter what detangling method/product wet dry damp anything even if I detangle 2 a week my hair knots like crazy. Because the curls are small as soon as they touch each other they tangle and create little cross links which tangle with other cross links and I end up with meshed hair. Braids help sometimes but only if done on hair blown straight otherwise after a week my hair meshes.
This is no matter if it's moisturised freshly detangled it still meshes and knots especially the ends. I thought it was my technique but one if the best uk curly specialists also had problems with it my hair he spent an hour detangling moved me to another chair and it was tangled again within like 10 minutes it's crazy.

Add that with the increased shedding I have due to illness I'm fighting a loosing battle, I don't want locs and I can't use relaxer due to illness so my question is what to do?
Short hair again? I really don't want to go back short but it seems the only option, I have so much breakage from trying to loosen the knotty curls but I can't just leave them cause they are all over my head.

Just to note I wash in many small sections, always cover my hair with satin scarves, deep treat and all that good stuff it's just the nature of my hair as I said I am fighting a loosing battle!

looking at how your pic has your hair wet + loose which for me = tangles that could be a lot of your problem. I can do a wash and go. It looks cute and all but the tangles are not worth it to me unless I absolutely have to. For mr it is best not to let my hair dry unstretched. And I have heard some vloggers with looser curls say they also get tangles from wash and goes. Once my hair became longer I had to start washing and detangling in sections. And once I detangle my wet hair I take that section and twist it up and put it in a butterfly clip to keep it from retanglng. Butterfly clips are my bff and stay in my shower. Also prepooing on dry hair helps me reduce the tangles that I tend to get from shampoo. Actually I recently put one tablespoon the rest watet in an applicator bottle and poured that over my hair that was in a few big twist and it worked great. I take the clipped section down one at a time as I'm adding my product but after either blotting or air drying long enough so my hair is damp not wet.
Thank you for your reply!
I already wash in sections, 6-8 twists I keep them twisted for my entire wash time.
I detangle pre shower rather than in the shower so I don't think that's the issue I used to let to dry in the twists but I'd get meshing so I found applying product to p each twist and then diffusing for 20-30 mins until mostly dry and then air drying for the last 20 minutes worked. I will try drying in twists again though.

I think a lot if it is just the nature of my hair I'm 20 and my mom had the same problem when I was younger so she kept it blown out
