May Hits & Misses

After ahiatus I thought we'd go bacvk to discussing what's our new holy grail and what's going in the garbage pail.

Mega Hit - Eliminating glycerin from my summer routine

Last summer keeping my hair moisturized was rough. So rough I ended up doing a good cut when summer ended because my ends were a mess even though I was cowashing every other day for hydration.. This summer I planned to do a lot of buns because for second day hair was not happening otherwise. Then when I started same problems this summer I got an idea. I typically add glycerin to my spritz in the winter and my hair loves it. The rest of the year I didn't add glycerin but I didn't avoid it either. So as an experiment I went through my products and anything with glycerin I put aside from my other stuff so not to pick it up out of habit. I started this about a month ago and My hair is doing so much better. I'm staying moisturized and soft. . I'm getting my usual three days before washing again. Pharell and I are singing the happy song.

I don't think I've ever participated in these before, lol. Here goes nothing!

Hit: Rinsing and conditioning my hair every 1-3 days when I'm at home versus stretching it out 4-5 days. I travel for work so it's the easiest way to shore up my hydration levels in between trips and then I don't have to bring a lick of product with me.

Combined with this other hit: Giovanni 2chic Avocado and Olive conditioner. One month in and it's made its way right onto my staples list.

Miss: KBB Hair Nectar and Sweet Ambrosia. These are NOT leave-in conditioners, despite what they say on the bottle. Shame on you Karen! I'd get more nourishment if someone accidentally spittled on me while they were telling me a story

Hits-
Giovanni Magnetic Force Styling Wax- I'm using it to touch up my edges between washes, it adds shine, and I am sure it will work great alone in less humidity. Right now it is not enough in Afghanistan.

I went to an Afghan market and got some strange products that worked well:

Fonex Styling Wax (It's a Dutch product, and probably the strongest hair wax I have ever used)- I bought it from an Afghan who swore by it. We have about 90% humidity daily, so I have had bad hair days out here for months. Gel stopped working a while back, so I switched to wax. Most waxes I put on my hair get absorbed into my hair and the edges lift back up. But when I used this wax, my hair is still shiny with laid down waves by the end of the day, and the next day. I plan on ordering from Amazon after I get home.

Ice Summer Natural Olive Hair Oil- the Afghan man also sold me this olive oil mix that I spray on my hair after it's dry. I am assuming it helps my hair hold just the right amount of moisture in or something. Before I started spraying the oil, my hair stayed way too moist/mushy in the humidity. It was like osmosis or something, just sucking the water out of the air. I hate oils but whatever this Chinese stuff is, it works.

Misses
Ecostyler- I gave it away to one of my relaxed coworkers. It just doesn't work in high humidity, it turns my hair into a sponge. I think I am done with gel now.

Mixed Chicks Leave In- Also turned my hair into a sponge in this humidity. I think it has too much vegetable oil for a leave in. It feels like it sets my hair up to be sucking moisture out of the air all day, if that makes sense. I will save it for dry weather.
No shampoo, no hair pins, no heat, no puffs... Just buns.

Almost MBL

Giovanni Ultra Moist conditioner, this stuff is amazing and is affordable. It is thick but easy to smooth into the hair and you don't need a ton of it for coverage.

Giovanni Ultra Sleek Conditioner, similar to ultra moist but slightly different. I have been alternating it with the ultra moist for my daily rinses.

Miss: Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie, my hair felt like straw 10-15 minutes after applying it! Which is never a good thing

Marley twist, I do believe I installed them wrong but this is a protective style I won't use again. My hair ended up being basically torn out from the twisting. Causing so much damage.

SM soufflé so far a two time miss. I tried it on stretch hair and was sticky. Freshly washed hair also sticky. I didn't think I used that much but I will try one more time. My hair looks HAM today. Can't wait to wash this out.

SM soufflé
So far a miss. I decided to try it because of sale although has glycerin. My hair feels really sticky. I didn't think I used a lot but IDK. Really want to wash this out.

BIG-TIME MISS: Shea Moisture Curling Souffle

OMG worst product experience ever! I tried to use it for a wash-n-go and Lord have mercy. I followed everyone's suggestions about pairing it with the smoothie, but neither defined my curls at all. I was still trying to savage my hair and avoid two washes on the same day by trying to finger coil my hair. DANGER!! My hair began to lock. I immediately washed that crap out and returned to Ol Faithful Eco.
Shampoo: Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine
Cowash: Curls Unleashed No Restrictions Conditioner
Deep Conditioner: Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque
Leave-In: Curls Unleashed No Boundaries
Oils: olive, argan, and Jamaican Black castor oils

Ok. I don't hate the souffle but not in love. I gathered hair enough for two medium twists, dip one finger dip of product, divided and twisted. Nice shine. No stickyness. But I mixed my conditioner with aloe vera gel and put that under it. My hair looked okay but didn't feel how I like.

Last summer my go to combo for my WnGs was a mix of the SM Souffle and WetLine Xtreme Gel. I did a 1/3 souffle to 2/3 gel. I usually steer clear of glycerin but somehow this worked fabulously and consistently.
