Smoothing Shampoos&Conditioners

I have a question about hair products that claim to smooth hair. I've read about them having benefits for the appearance of hair (shiny, frizz-free) but do they do anything for preventing tangles and knots? I have 4C hair that is plagued by single-strand-knots and I'm looking for a way to bring the amount down. I wear my hair in two-strand twists during the majority of the week. I take them down for two days, sleep in a satin bonnet, and wash on the second evening.
Some of the smoothing products have silicones in them that help the hair to not tangle so easily. However, the knots may be due to a need for a trim, a need to clarify and deep condition, or a need for a different style. This is just my opinion- the other members here may have more advice.
For me ssks come with the territory but I find certain things give me more of them

1- letting my hair dry unstretched
2- exposing my hair to a lot of wind
3 -not enough moisture
4 - overdue for a trim
5 - not enough throrough detangling.

I would say 1 and 3 are the biggies for me. Maybe your hair needs more moisture. My hair needs water every day. I find I can't moisturize my hair as effectively when in twists. I also find moisturiziing and sealing my ends with shea butter is a big help. Some people use castor which is also heavy. Maybe you can try spritzing and sealing every day or other day. Of course that won't get rid of what you have. You might try oil rinse during your wash. HTH

OP, maybe your hair needs more moisture before applying the smoothing products? My hair needs water-based products every day--max I can go is 2 days w/o spritzing or applying product. After that, I get good results with products that claim to smooth or minimize frizz.

I have 4C hair (though I am questioning this lately as my hair grows out and I'm getting more clumping uniform coils the more hydrated my hair is...), and I also have to say that I cannot leave my hair in twists larger than a pencil for more than 2 days. I cannot braid to save my life, so I wear an afro or do twists nightly. As adthomas suggested, I also add a healthy dose of some sealing/thick product (shea butter-based in winter...moisturizing gel for summer) to keep that smooth feel and look.

I also discovered I need to PREP my hair for accepting smoothing products:
Coconut Oil (lots and lots of it--especially if I will shampoo right after)
Shea Moisture Curling Gel Soufflé (If I put this on tangle-y/knotty ends with a spritz of water, the knots and tangles get slippery and I can work them out if they haven't completely *tightened* up)

I stopped sleeping with my hair loose, too. I either
1) twist it all up (I listen to audiobooks/watch TV--30-40 min tops) or
2) put in about 8 silky little hair ties to make mini afro puffs**
**Note: I can only do this if I have a lot of oil/curling souffle on my ends. Otherwise, I get tangled/SSK ends when I go to fluff out the afro

Finally, I have no idea why it works for me, but I did a Cherry Lola Treatment again for the 2nd time this month and if I work quickly enough to put on a leave-in straight from the shower, I only find about 3-4 SSKs that cannot be worked out. My hair products that claim to detangle and smooth are also working much, much, MUCH better. I guess what I'm trying to say is that honestly, I had to prep my 4C to get it into a state that would make those "smoothing/detangling/frizz-free" products work for me (Kinky Curly Knot Today, I'm lookin' at you!).

Please post back what products you are looking at, I'm interested!
