What's your Gel application technique

I have type 4a/b hair and I was wondering how all type 4s
apply gel to their hair? Basically, How do YOU apply gel to your hair?

I apply gel to dripping wet hair and use 4 fingers of both hands (excluding
my thumb) to kind of glide over my hair in a forward motion for the curls to form. For some reason if I try to do it in a backwards or back and forth motion it completely backfires
Hmm. That would never work for my hair. My hair is long and dense. Gel has to be applied in sections in order for me to get it to all my hair. I rake and smooth with hands. Some people brush through with Denman to smooth. And I don't apply products to soaking wet hair only damp otherwise my hair won't absorb it.

Wow, this video really got popular. It only had a few thousand views when I first saw it.

I also have long, dense hair. I use the same method adthomas uses to apply gel:
Thoroughly detangle hair using the 3 comb method.
Apply gel in a smoothing motion
Ensure hair is damp or gel will not get absorbed.
I have to use small sections or areas of my hair will get missed.
Then I use my Tek brush (similar to a Denman but with solid wood pins) to distribute it.

I notice a lot of type 4's use gel for edges. I never understood this since the rest of your hair didn't match the way the gel made the texture. So I never used gel, plus I like that my edges match the rest of my kinky 4b/mostly 4c hair. Also i feel afraid to use gel simply because i heard it causes buildup, which means I'd have to wash my hair more often(especially the edges) ruining my stretched out fro or braidouts. So it's just best to leave it alone. Also I have a lot of hair so when my hair is stretched my edges aren't that noticeable anyway, and even when it is(with high winds blowing my hair everywhere) it don't look bad to me and I don't like buns or updos because it makes me look older(like grandma).
