Mermade two more questions where did you get the pectin and did you use as much lemon juice as the recipe recommends? Sounds like it might be very drying.

I use 2 tablespoons of ACV or red wine, but you can also use green tea or hibiscus tea instead of water in the recipe, and that will release the dye as well. Also, I add 2-4 tbsps of oil to the mix to helps combat dryness. The gell helped the henna wash down the drain because you end up using less of it than making a traditional paste, and it washes out almost as easily as a henna gloss. I hope that helps. Happy hennaing!!!

I recently purchased a bag of henna, some amla powder, and hibiscus powder. I have many herbs and I have some spices. I want to do a henna treatment but
1. I don't know how much to use
2. I'm afraid that my hair will come out bad
3. I don't know what liquid I should use to avoid dry brittle hair.
I am just scared! So can some one help me? My hair is thick and dry so moisture is a huge factor for me. I'm not doing the henna specifically for color, but I don't mind a slight color- my hair is black. Any recipes?
Also, my hair is completely natural. I have never chemically colored my hair and I have grown out my relaxer. I had my last relaxer in 2006. My hair is about shoulder length streched and It shrinks massively. It gets tangled easily as well
And two more things: should you do it on clean hair damp, clean dry hair, not so clean dry hair, or not so clean damp hair? should I detangle it first?

If you hair is clean, dry and detangled, you can apply the treatment on dry hair. It'll just make it easier to rinse out in the end. If you are going to use a bunch of herbs, I would do 2 parts henna to 1 part of the other two herbs. If you are using more than two herbs, use 2 parts henna to 1/2 part each of other herbs. For example: 100g henna, 50 grams alma, 50 grams hibiscus. Or 100g henna, 25g each of alma, bramhi, hibiscus, etc.
200g of henna and/or henna and herbs is a good place to start for shoulder length hair, unless it's super thick. In any case, it's always better to mix more and refrigerate the leftovers for future use than to run out halfway through! As for liquid, some people use coconut milk to combat dryness. I have used water or tea and I add 2-4 tbsp of oil to the mix. And ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do a deep conditioning treatment after you henna! That should take care of any dryness issue. Also, alma tends to darken your results, so you won't have super red color if you use it regularly.
I hope that helps. Welcome to henna!

^^^ good tips, mermadelove!

cocoT: I've only used henna, so I can't speak on the other powders except for amla. Oh and cassia. I use either water or tea (green or red zinger) and just recently lemon juice in my mix. For me, honey is a must because it makes my mix much smoother and rinses out so well!

And like mermadelove said, always do a DT after you henna. I use Jessicurl WDT with heat. Others like AO HSR but any good moisturizing deep conditioner you like should suffice. I use V05 conditioner to rinse out the henna. I use about 2 1/2 bottles.

CurlyNikki has a really good tutorial vid on her site if you want to check that out...it's really good and pretty much what I follow. (www.curlynikki.com)

Good luck! and come back with pics once you take the plunge!

Oh yeah! I always forget to say the honey--or in my case, agave nectar. I try to be as vegan as possible! But it does help with rinsing and application, too!

I am thinking of trying henna, but all the info is a bit overwhelming I have type 4 hair and am currently growing out my relaxer. i would love to get more shine and health to my NG as i plan to be a LT transitioner.

1. What steps do i need to take with shampoo/DT'ing pre and post henna?
2. How will henna affect my hair colour? ( I have really, really dark brown (virgin) hair that looks black from far off)- I would love to have a glossy jet-black shade for a change
3. How will henna affect my relaxed ends?
4. Can i get the same benefits by mixing the henna powder with some moisturising conditioner and applying to my hair, since my hair tends to get very, very dry

Sorry for all the questions, but with all the beautiful henna-kissed hair of heads on this thread, i'm like:-
Thanks

If you hair is clean, dry and detangled, you can apply the treatment on dry hair. It'll just make it easier to rinse out in the end. Pure henna's color is red. You will get red shine in sunlight if you use henna on dark hair. More intense color will happen with repeated uses. If you want jet black hair, you can do henna and indigo. Henna for hair has details. They even have pre-bundled packages of all of the herbs you'll need to acheive your desired results. I have transitioning hair, too and I have found that repeated uses of henna have gotten my relaxed ends almost straight, and my 4a/4b curls to 3c. I have started adding alma powder to my mix, because Idon't want to lose my curls!
Mixing henna with conditioner like you are talking about is called a henna gloss and the first two time I hennaed this is what I did-- and that's what I've got on my head as we speak!! ( plus alma). I had great color and conditioning results doing that.
When you rinse out your henna, using a conditioner to do that ( basically co-washing rather than shampooing) will help to get the henna out and help to combat dryness. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS deep condition after a full henna treatment. No need to do so after a henna gloss, because it is a DT.
Hope that helps.
Happy hennaing!

Thanks mermadelove. I will use a different acid than lemon juice (like I usually do) and check for pectin in the supermarket.
Hi ladies,
I don't know if I've ever posted in this thread, but I wanted to post today because I used henna.

I had left henna for a while (to experiment with other herbs). But lately my hair just craved that thickness and strength and softness that I get from henna. I had been using henna since last year and stopped mid this year.

So today, I mixed jamila henna with about 3 tbls of fenugreek powder and warm water. The fenugreek made the paste soo slippery! I applied the paste to my hair and left it on for 30 minutes while I sat under my steamer. After I rinsed, my hair was soft, felt thicker and moisturized (I've never experienced dryness with henna). I DTed with Afroveda ashlii amala afterwards.

My hair is thanking me

Has anyone tried mixing their henna and herbs with coconut milk? What's the verdict? I'm curious to try this.

Henna glossing as I type. It's been on for about three hours; I'm about to put an electric pad on my head and watch Food Network. Gotta love Sundays.
It worked great and covered my grey/gray nicely. Red is a natural color for my hair and I love it. I like the idea of freezing and using leftovers with conditioner for Gloss. I know that I am in LOVE with Henna and will do this from now on!
about to henna right now ... oiled my scalp last night and about to put some coconut oil and glycerin in my mix to further soften my hair ... yeahhh !
Transitioning since Sep 17 2009
BC Due Date: Jam 30 2010
Oct 24 2009 - made henna and put in freezer for the day of my bc .. yes i know .. i prepare well in advance
Hey ladies! I did the henna and ayurvedic herbs thing with coconut milk as my liquid-- no other oils added. I did henna/alma/maca/brahmi/fenugreek and the milk. It wased out about as easily as the gelled henna technique and I LOVE the results! My hair is shiny and my braided roller set is holding up really well! I did do an AVC rinse after my DT and before leaving in KCKT. I think the reason my hair didn't dry as soft last time was because I did the air dry and I usually dry under the hair dryer.
I guess I'm going to have to break down and get a fokti so I can post pics!

I don't DT after my henna treatments and my hair never dries out or suffers any ill effects but then again, I condition and wash my hair before I henna. Maybe that's why.
