There is no "brand name" indigo, that I know of. I purchased mine from AyurNatural beauty. You can purchase 100% BAQ henna, as well.

I have dark brown almost black hair, but i have i guess reddish brown "highlights" when its in the light. Anyone think the henna would bring out those "highlights"?

Also, thank you so much MzMillion! So far, I love your videos and your cool vibes and find them to be of benefit to me.

I did the following:

Went over various recipes and instructions for mixing and plucked the most benificial info for me. Deciding that color was not so important to me as conditioning, I chose to substitute lemon juice/green tea/ anything acidic for just warm water.

Mixed the following into a PLASTIC bowl:
  1. 100 g Jamilla Summer 2009 henna
  2. 2 squirts honey
  3. 1 1/4 cup warm water (*just before boiling*)
  4. 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  5. 2 teaspoons sweet almond oil
  6. 5 drops rosemary essential oil
I mixed for about 5 to 10 minutes until all the lumps were gone, and I watched the henna mix change rom green to brown to dark brown with red swirls in it.
Then, I wet my freshly washed hair (so it would be damp), applied gloves and went at it, applying everywhere until all areas of my hair were completely covered. I thought this was going to be a mess so my friend placed a whole bunch of newspaper and plastic wrap all over the place. About 15 minutes later she comes in to look, and the place was spotless!! We concluded that maybe only the longhaired curlies have the splattering issues.... With nape length 4b hair, I only used about 1/3 of my mix, so that was the second thing that surprised me. I put the rest of the mix to freeze, and sat for 5 hours.

When I went to wash it out, I conditioner washed 2 times and that was it. The water was clear.
Deep conditioned for an hour and a half with ORS Olive Oil Reconstructing Pak mixed with 10 drops sweet almond oil. Rinsed that out too.

I noticed that my hair did more of a corkscrew clumping (which is shocking, should you ever happen to see a picture of my 'bush head' LMAO) and I got a great brownish color. The thing that confuses me, is how I got such a GREAT dye release after only 15 minutes of mixing, but my hair still feels so dry...

Do you all know of a better deep conditioner for 4b hair? I could care less what the cost is, because I feel like I have tried just about everything around me... except the pricey deep conditioners like miss jessies and carol's daughter, and uncle funky's daughter... but that's only because I have been disappointed by some of their other products with mineral oil, and all kinds of other unknown ingredients.

Also, do you think that I applied the wrong oils to my mix? Please offer any and all sentiments on the sweet almond oil, coconut oil, etc..

Thank you so much for listening, and thank you so much in advance if you plan to respond. I will be patiently waiting !
Have you tried Oyin Handmade's Honey Hemp? Right now that is my favorite. Nothing I've tried so far leaves my hair as soft. Like you I haven't been too pleased with Carol's Daughter products, but the Tui Hair Smoothie would be my second fav. However I haven't used it in a few months since running out because I'm not in to paying $20 for 8oz that I'll only get about 3 DC's out of, whereas Oyin HH is $18 for 16 oz. and that will last me a good while.

Mzmillion is right about not washing and/or conditioning enough to get all the henna residue out. Some have had to wash/rinse/cond quite a few times to get rid of it (I tried to go through all of the older posts lol!). Also another mentioned that someone from a Henna forum (http://www.hennaforhair.com/forum/in...WS_MAN_ITEMS=4) said that sometimes you have to do back to back applications to jump start the process. This could very well be true because something as simple as Oyin's Honey Hemp Cond took 2 tries before it worked wonders in my hair. The first time I used it I was mortified! My hair felt horrible. Weird. But now I looove it!

Now I've seen a few people say that henna loosens your curl pattern if you frequently use it. I'm sure this could vary from person to person, but I would like to know if any of you ladies have tried it for close to a year or longer with no change in curl pattern. Does anyone know if this is true for cassia as well? I really want to try henna mainly for color, and then use cassia about every other week for the deep treatments since it can thicken hair, which is what I'm hoping for along with the strengthening.

She has some good info in this post. I'm also about to read a small e-book from this site on henna.
http://www.hennaforhair.com/forum/in...HPWS_MAN_ITEMS[]=8402

Sorry for the rambling lol.
Hmm... thanks for your reply!

Oyin is a company I've been looking at in terms of reviews from other users... I think I may have to make a purchase from them.. soon!! Right now I am on a budget so I'm using my cheapie stuff (vo5)... Do you use any other Oyin products? I hear good things about the Greg Juice and that other spray...

And as far as the henna... My hair is now a beautiful, not loud dark red/brown tint. It only really shows in the sun, though. I have been using it once every week for the last 10 weeks and there is a definite change in my curl pattern. The cassia has done the same thing too. I was a 4b, with the tight tight coils, and now it is still 4b but it just looks MUCH looser, not like a 4a or a 3c, still 4b.. I can't explain it lol.. and it is as thick as all heck! Can't run the pick through it anymore, now only a wide tooth comb!! Need to find something to do with it.. because the every day pick it in a fro thing is not working anymore... but it's not long enough to do anything else... AAAAHHH WHAT A FIGHT !!

@QueenOfKinks I went Oyin crazy a few months back in addition to the Honey Hemp Cond. I got the Honey Wash which I love. So far it's the only shampoo that leaves my hair really soft without that stripped feeling. The Whipped Pudding, it's good. I was using it for twistouts...it kept my hair moisturized and it absorbed well. Burnt Sugar Pomade...I love this stuff. It's been working really well at the ends of my twists or braids, and I'm thinking it would be great for smoothing pony tails. Juices & Berries spray....this stuff is good diluted, it leaves a sticky film so I started diluting mines with water. I would buy again only if a couple of other sprays I want to try do not work out. And the Shine & Define. This is the only thing from Oyin I did not like. It balled up @ the ends of my hair and when I would touch my hair I was grabbing these little white balls. Gross. However it smells delicious like ALL of Oyins stuff!

When you say henna & cassia loosened your curls would you mean before you had tight coils (like the spring in an ink pen) and after they were bigger/looser like spiral curls I guess??? I worry about loosing curls but if it only loosens mines enough to keep them from coiling around each other that might actually benefit me when detangling. I think I've lost some of my thickness from detangling.

I just found this picture so try not to pay too much attention to the letters and stuff on it... but basically my hair went from letter A to letter B. I (personally) could care less about curls and curl definition, so that's why I don't mind it... my hair seems stretched and the coils seem a little relaxed. Yippee!!

I have hennaed my hair 3 times this month looking for shine that I get with my old demi color and it is so dull now. I was wondering if I could apply my demi on top of the henna just for shine or will my hair turn some kind of crazy color I wouldn't want? The reason why I hennaed was for the strengthening property and shine, but only got one success with it. Can someone help me with this shine factor that I want? My hair is 4a, 4b.

Okay, so I finally decided to do a henna gloss. Mind you, I have successfully hennaed about 5x now and I "had" it down to a science. Henna YAAAY! Henna gloss. . .not so much. . .

I was thinking I would do a gloss to make things a bit easier on myself tonight. Wrong! what an ordeal! It took forever what with all the gooping and glopping. I have never made such a mess with my henna paste as I did with that gloss tonight. Henna EVERYWHERE! Henna paste was easy peasy compared to this. I never had any significant drippies or mess with the paste.

Also, I had to double, triple, quadruple, wrap my hair, heck I lost count as to how much saran wrap and how many baggies I put on. I had to tie down at least 3 layers of plastic as well as put in cotton balls to catch the drippies, and I am still not 100% confident that it will not leak.

I should have known when I looked at that mix and saw how thin it was that this was not going to work, which in hindsight, yes, I did. My hair was even a bit too wet as well. I'll stop ranting as I am sure you can all imagine the mess I had on my hands/head.

I did manage to muddle through, thicken up the mix and finish the job. Now I have this goopy henna mix on my head for the night.

I have already sworn off doing this again because of all the trouble, but you and I all know if it comes out well, I'll be back at it again!

Ladies if you will please forgive my rant, can you tell me the secret to a successful henna gloss? I cannot appreciate how you can keep the mix thick and more pastelike if you are adding only a bit of henna to cheapy conditioner. Wouldn't that tend to make it a thinner mix? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What kind of conditioner did you use. If the conditioner was relatively thin, try a thicker moisturizing conditioner. Adding dried herbs may make the mix thicker

Has anyone tried Yemeni henna? I wanted to try it because they say it stains the best but it says its stringy and I don't really know what that refers to specifically. I just don't want it to be hard to rinse out and I have used Jamila and rinsing was a breeze!

Should have followed the advice I read here. I tried Rainbow brand henna over the weekend and it was a mess and totally didn't work.

I did a full henna last month and a henna gloss last week. The henna gloss was much easier and less messy than the full henna. I used 100 g (1 box) of BAQ Jamila henna, full-fat yogurt (approx. 3/4 cup), and Yes to Cucumbers conditioner (approx. 4-5 tbsp...maybe a little more). I really didn't measure...just tried to get a pancake mix consistency. I also added 1 egg yolk.

Good for you

I just did my first ever Henna Gloss. I used Jamila and used about four conditioners: HE Break's Over, Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle, Organix Vanilla Silk, Lustrasilk Shea and Mango and coconut oil( I put this one in right before I applied it to my head). I didnt leave it in for an hour, maybe 56 mintues cuz I was so scared

While it didnt loosen my curl pattern, it did the opposite and just made my curls POP. Before my curls used to stand up after the henna gloss treatment, it hanged down.

I used Giovanni Smooth As Silk Shampoo because its sulfate free and I wanted to combat the drying effects of Henna. It was my first time using SAS and I dont think I'll be purchasing it again. I dont know. It made my hair have a wtf moment... Like it wasnt used to it.

I wanted to use Henna because ever since I went to get my hair trimmed/even at the Dominicans, my hair has been shedding A LOT I was hoping (assuming?) Henna would stop the shedding a little.

Right now I'm sitting here with HE's Breaks Over in my head as a deep treatment....

I got my Jamila Henna for $4. I only used one box...

For anyone that was paying attention to my post, I hoped it helped

I am so glad you had henna gloss success. For me, the full henna paste is waaay easier and i like the effects much better. I have some greys and the gloss just didn't quite cut it. Perhaps if I did it every couple of weeks they would get darker over time. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I think I may try the gloss again but it will be a while. Yesterday someone looked at me and asked if I colored my hair. It was said somewhat in surprise and just not in a very positive light it seemed. Anyway, she called it, right there in what I consider dim, indoor lighting.. . "is it reddish brown?" I replied yes, I have been coloring with henna. No response followed. Guess it doesn't look very good. I knew it was a bit dull after the gloss and the greys were a little brassy. My henna wasn't as red brown as usual as I think I overdid the amla. Since then, I have not been able to follow with a full amla/brahmi/kalpi tone paste to tone down the color and bring up the shine. I am doing it now! Off to the other thread.

Thanks!
