Experiences with Henna?

Like Tree64Likes

I bought my henna ladies! I got 500g of Jamila Superior Quality Henna for $12.25. I'm so excited! However, I don't have any gloves. I think I'm gonna bum some from a custodian on campus lol. Or just be extremely ghetto and use all the damn plastic grocery bags, wrap one over each hand and do it like that until I get some gloves. Hey, if it works it works. lmao.

The lady at the store when I went up to the counter to check out was like, "Hey you called me on the phone yesterday." I said "yeah that was me and you'll probably be seeing me often now."

If I prep the stuff tonight I can do it tomorrow night and keep it on over night then wash it out in the morning...sounds good to me.

Oh yeah Spiral In your album you said henna has not affected your wash and gos, why would you think it would?

I think she said that in reference to my posts about my sudden decrease in shrinkage. It does pull out the curl in some folks, so the wash&go may lose some of its POP w/henna. However, this is only temporary...

Congrats on your henna find Heather!

Nikki, I love how you wear your hair down in the front. I need to start trying that - I always push my hair back with combs or a headband.

I have to wear my front hair back; the texture is different from the rest of my head. It's straightish like you said spiral.

Guess what I found out and am doing tomorrow? I found an Indian store, called them up and they have Jamila Henna! So I'm going there tomorrow to pick some up. I really hope it's not expensive that'd make me so sad.

ETA: Guys, I've been having good hair days, everyday! Geesh...i'm getting the itch and my next scheduled henna'ing ain't until Friday night. Today, one of my co-workers told me it looked like I had on a wig When I looked at her puzzled, she was like...its a good thing, lol, your hair looks different and I like it. My curls are much more 'clumpy' and the shine is pretty darn ridiculous... I guess it is a different head of hair

I'm glad to hear that you guys are having success with henna. I've only tried cassia and I have to say that I wasn't that impressed. I did back to back cassia treatments and I didn't really notice a significant change to my hair. The only thing that I felt cassia did was strengthen my hair a bit. Other than that, my hair is still spongy, limp, and dull. Maybe I did something wrong with the Cassia? This makes me a little apprehensive to try henna.

From what you all are saying, I wonder if Henna is such a good idea for my hair, especially in the crown and towards the front. The crown has always been a kind of frizzy straightish, densely packed, coarse but fragile area. It's the part I was hoping would benefit most from the henna's strengthening and smoothing properties.

But if straightening has to come with it. . .I don't know. I've spent the last couple of years trying to coax the curl back into the front, which used to be springy S-Curls before pressing combs and tight ponytails took their toll. I've now finally got it back to at least waves, with the right treatment. i really would not want to lose that progress. And I don't want the crown any "straighter" either.

I know henna is supposed to be superior but I was leaning towards the cassia, as I have this love/hate relationship with my hair color and I might miss it if it's permanently gone.
Hey Jeamaria, sorry - don't think I was being clear. I had squiggles and a patch on my crown that was straightish before I started to use henna. I was watching to make sure the henna wouldn't pull out the squiggly curls or make my crown straighter. But henna hasn't straightened those areas, even though overall my hair shrinks less. So, I don't think you have to worry, but a strand or patch test might be in order, because everyone reacts differently.

Ajidahk, I'm sorry about the cassia. I would especially expect results after a back to back treatment. I'd like to know what steps you followed too.

PS. This weekend may be a henna weekend if my package arrives in time !

BTW, does the jamila henna come with a date on it to ensure freshness? If so, is it catherine's doing or is this the way the henna is always sold?

Jeamaria, it still might put your mind at ease to do a patch test (and mine too - I don't want you hunting me down! LOL).

Nope. Glass works too. I think on hennaforhair.com people in India use copper pots? I'm sure Spiral can chime in on this one...

I just used a regular metal pot like you might use to cook with. I didn't want to take the chance of ruining my roommate's bowls.

I'll go buy some plastic tupperware ones for next time i guess.

Oh yeah, can the color of henna vary? My henna wasn't bright green it was sort of more greenish brown i guess? I felt it to make sure it was ultra smooth like you said jamila would be and it is. It smells like hay to me.
