Experiences with Henna?

i don't think i'm ready for comments though especially after hearing about what happened with curli? i think it was.
I've had both comments and guestbook open since the start of my Fotki. You have a choice of opening either or both; you can open comments and/or guestbook only to Fotki members (what I do); and there are other levels of access you can choose. I've never had a comment that was even close to negative in the 8 months I've had it up. In fact I removed password authentication to hair albums after awhile. I've visited a lot of albums and haven't seen one neg comment. The curli thing was maybe an exception.

thanks so much Fleurzty & Suburbanbushbabe! i'm trying to learn from you ladies...i feel the same way about all of you and your beautiful manes of hair...my hair is soooooo dry. that's why this henna epidemic has really peaked my interest. and you all seem to have mastered daily presentable hair. i wear a hat more than i don't wear a hat unless my hair is twisted or put up...it's crazy work...but hopefully with henna and some of you all's techinques and product suggestions, i can be free of my extensive hat collection

Heather your hair looks great! You know you're doing the damn thing when you can look good after working out

I'm currently enjoying the benefits of my latest henna treatment too. My hair is a little looser, but that's expected on the first day. It should spring back up a bit after another co-wash. But it's official...my shrinkage, while not eliminated by any means, has been reduced. My hair only shrinks to just below my chin now! Directly after a henna treatment, it sits on my shoulders.

It is unbeleiveably soft, shiny and STRONG. My hair also has a much smoother appearance compared to a month ago. Like you Heather, my hair hangs loose and close to my scalp while in the shower and it poofs out after I rinse and wring and prepare to style. The overall volume has increased and so has my satisfaction with the health of my hair. I'll post pics tomorrow or Tuesday. Also, my hairline, which wasn't thin or anything is really thickening up. I'll take a pic of it too.

By the bye, I used SheaMoisture leave-in for the first time and while I didn't enjoy the 'rough' application process, my hair looks amazing! It feels as if I used ZERO products but I can tell that my ends are properly moisturized. I also liked using only 2 products: SM and HE Body Envy as opposed to my BB arsenal. The results are too similar to BB for me to continue buying the those products. If I get a whole week of awesome hair out of this stuff, I think I'll be adding a new HG to my sigi

Good question...I have no idea.. I never even knew I have cyber enemies! I uploaded my pics and haven't checked it since I got that haircut. I cut it down way more since then because there were some straggly pieces..

Anywho, on Fri? I said lemme look at it and I saw the comment. So, I'm thinking whoever posted that doesn't have much of a life & I prayed for them already..

That's it in a nutshell.

Nikki- Glad to hear it! How did you apply the SheaMoisture though? People said it was thick, did you have to cut it at all? Also you never answered me about buying from FNWL.

I'd like to try the SheaMoisture, but I'm seriously afraid I'm one of those people whose hair doesn't like shea butter. I have no evidence of this, I'm just afraid it's the case lol. Samples here I come.

I didn't cut it, but I apply leave-ins to soaking wet hair, so it's kinda like cutting it (plus I keep my hands wet too, to reduce frizz). I always divide my hair into the same 4 sections (2 up front and 2 in back...after detangling in the shower, I twist these sections to keep them seperated and tangle free) and I take down one section at a time, applying the leave-in (SM) in a raking/smoothing method and then adding the gel. It went on rough, so it took a little bit to work it in...but its worth it for the price and the results.

ETA: I had the 'fear of shea' thing too, especially since it's the FIRST ingredient on the list. It's THICK as hell, but after it dries, there is no product-y or waxy feel...my hair is as light as air. I have very fine strands, so if anyone would be effected by a 'heavier' product like shea, it would be me, I suppose. So far so good... Get some samples

Hmmm... well it's not expensive, maybe I'll try it out and get some samples of the nubian heritage stuff too. I've still got a buttload of samples from BB, (I dunno, I used HNS one day and was the results were mediocre so I haven't touched my other stuff) so maybe I'll get around to using them one day. I just dont want to commit to full size and then be stuck with something else in my cabinets.

Oh yeah Nik, how was it on slip? Sounds like it wasn't since you said the application was rough. Also, what's the consistency like? I'm big on consistency I like leave ins that have weight and I think i'd like something that felt almost like snot. lol. I know gross, but it seems like it'd really do what I'd like for it to do with that consistency.

Slip...non-existent. I get better slip with AO HSR and it gives less slip than some conditioners I've used (i.e. BB Curl Quenching, TJ Nourish Spa, etc.). I know what you mean about the 'snot' like consistency. That is why I liked PM The Conditioner so much...it gave great definition but not enough moisture. It did give my hair a little weight, but not as much as BB, which is fine. I just need something that is very moisturizing and cost effective. To keep my hair feeling slippery, I made sure my hands stayed wet.

Come to think of it, this stuff might be thicker than AO HSR... it doesn't look like it should work, but it does. It's annoying as hell to apply, but it gets the job done...and for only 9 dollars

I just got an idea, Nik. I bet I could add some flaxseed gel to the sheamoisture leave in and that would improve the slip. Apparently, it feels alot like snot. Worth a shot and it might even provide a little extra hold, thus making gel not as necessary. I'll look into this when I get the SM

So much going on in this thread but:

I cant wait to do a Cassia treatment. I ordered some from Hennasooq.com. I hope to experience less shrinkage with the Cassia as some of you are getting with the Henna!

Mothereartha, you have really cute and thick hair. I love it!

HeatherNicole, you can definitely see the curl loosening progression from your first henna treatment to your third treatment. It looks great. Is it a concern of any you gals, who are doing this treatment weekly. That your curl might loosen too much?

rockin' to the tune of her own beat...

I was readin a lot of the forum on the henna for hair site and some people were saying that leaving the henna on for 4 hours gives maximun dye uptake...is that true? Do you just leave it on longer for conditioning benefits?

Back on Cones,so now my routine is,wash with Deva No-Poo every other day or so. Occasionally use 365 sulfate free, maybe use low sulfate shampoo mixed with conditioner once every two weeks are longer. I condition with Aussie Moist or HEHH. I style with a little GF TN,and finish up with tons of GN Pure Clean Smoothing Cream. No frizz...slippy, happy hair.
Foxycus- Thank you for the compliment. Yes, the curl has loosened quite a bit. Especially the front which was already loose. I had done the my 2nd and 3rd henna less than a week apart. I won't be doing that again. I think that could be part of the reason.

Brown&Curly- 4 hours is the least amount of time I've left mine on. I won't be leaving it on for less than 6 hours now just b/c I don't think I got enough of the benefits color or conditioning wise from it. If I'm gonna slap some slop on my head, then I want it to do the best it can do.

I apply that over the CFP, which I use about a nickel size amount of for each section. Any more than that and my hair feels weighed down. Whenever I try new products, I lightly shampoo and condition (w/my normal stuff) and then apply. I try not to judge either way for a week or so, to give the new routine a fair shot. Try using even less of the HNS...or just focusing on the ends. Let me know how it works out!

B&C- I read that as well, and I'd have to agree. I don't notice much difference in color between a 4 hour treatment and a 15 hour one. I just leave it on overnight out of sheer laziness. You should be fine doing a four hour session...but I'd do at least one of those hours with heat.

Foxy- The Cassia didn't prevent the shrinkage like the henna has, IMO. It has great conditioning effects and smoothing effects, but the reduced shrinkage has really come from the henna. Plus, the effects of Cassia are not long lasting.
