Experiences with Henna?

Thank you Momo

Actually the color levels in my avatar are messed with using a graphic editing program. Forever I was having a really hard time getting my hair to photograph a halfway realistic color. Inside with flash it still looks almost yellow from all the glare. I played around with my avatar trying to get it to look more like it really does, then gave up and just made it really orange, lol.

This is the most realistic picture I have been able to get. It is outside in the sun right after my most recent henna, so inside in poor lighting it does look browner than this. And remember I started hennaing over blonde so if yours is dark brown or black it will not go this color.

I also didn't wait for it to dry long enough, so I'm sorry for the straight, stringy and crispy looking parts.

Okay, sry if I'm askin too much:
-What type of henna do you use?
-Do you recommend Jamila?
-Could I use it like cassia since I don't really need dye release?
Thank you so much!

And no such thing as too much hair questions, or this site would not exist!

I have been using Yemen from mehandi.com. I have also tested a small sample of Jamila from that site, and I was very pleased with it. I think I had better dye uptake on my pigmented hair test from the Jamila actually, but the Yemen was better on greys.

I would definitely recommend Jamila, even though I have only done a small test with it, myself. It made the hair conditioned, and if I pulled it flat it almost looked like the hair samples at the drugstore or Sally's. It was gross and dull before that. Yemen had a color I liked more (and color was a big point for me since I was blonde at the time, I would pay way less attention to it if my hair was all black or dark brown) and covered greys more, which was also a big point for me. I did think it smelled trivially better than Jamila when wet, but neither of them smell awful to me.

You can definitely just mix it with water and apply immediately. In fact I did that the last time and still got this much dye, lol. It varies a lot with individual hair and water. Everyone seems to agree though, if you do something to henna to not get dye out of it (like don't leave it long enough to release, or cook it first) you still do get the conditioning properties. For me it took about 3-4 applications before the texture of my hair really showed a difference.
I read on http://www.mehndiskinart.com/facts_a...mila_henna.htm
that there are two types of Jamila (different box appearance): one for just the hair dyeing; another for tattooing and for hair dyeing.
I want to buy some boxes of Jamila asap @ my local indian store b/c it's so darn cheap. I feel like a fiend right now. Aaaaahh!!!!!!!!
I looked on mehandi.com and couldn't find the yemen henna.
My mission to gradually depend less on gel for my hair and more on oil, leave in conditioner, and henna/cassia.

Got the Jamila henna in my head. No staining or nothing, it was such a smooth application. Just mixed and applied. Planning on leaving it in for just 2hrs. Only one drip on my t-shirt that my older bro referred to as "poop". It was so funny when he saw me mixing it in the bowl, he had a puzzled look like...is she seriously mixing poop...I told him it was henna. He said I don't wanna mess with that voodoo...it was so hilarious.
I had purchased some Dabur Jasmine Hair Oil since Amla is so high in mineral oil. It's like a cool/hot oil treatment b/c you leave it in hair for @ least an hour then use a conditioning shampoo (I used a clarifying conditioner) to wash out. The box recommends using it 3x per week for best results. I really like the smell. I used it (then washed it out and stuff as directed and towel dried) prior to the henna and, to me, although the edges were fuzzy, the texture of my hair felt and looked so nice and felt so silky and the curls were so shiny. I was like . The henna was so easy to put in that it almost felt like I was getting away with a crime or something. I could even finger comb the henna through my hair without any tangles...I was like 8-O WOW!!!! Anyway, I'll try to post pics asap sometime this week with my results and stuff. So long for now my fellow henna headz!

p.s.- this is my first henna....I feel so.....well like this...
It looks very shiny!

I saw your note about the picture of the back, but I think the caption got cut off so I couldn't read it all.

Do you think that could have something to do with the sectioning that it had been in previously?

Or, are you sure it's rinsed really well? Leftover henna-dust in it can cause weird crispiness in a hurry.
how did u getyour hair to grow sooo long-i took a look at your pics-your hair looks so good

-The caption @ the end was supposed to say "doesn't cooperate".
-The sectioning may have alot to do with it b/c I've been depending on one way of sectioning for years and it isolates the back and has gotten more coarse over time.
-I rinsed kinda well, but definitely not as well as I should have. I have to improve that next time.

If you are referring to me then, thanks a zillion.
Momo how do you get your hair to look so shiny? I absolutely love it. My greys are longer... they're taunting me. I can't henna until next weekend because I'm having family stay over tonight.

Oh by the way, I refer to the henna substance as applying "baby poop" My kids make fun of me when I have it on my hair

Like I'll wash my hair with the conditioner, then rinse and apply the same thing on my head again but in sections, and leave it on for like 2-4 hours....never overnight for me with VO5 anymore, I had bad experiences doing that back in 2005...then I try to rinse with cool water. (I use: Free Me Freesia, it makes me sneeze sometimes cause it smells like a flower garden; Chamomile Tea; Kiwi Lime Clarifying; Vanilla Clarifying...I try to stay away from the Moisture Milks soy protein ones cause they caused buildup in the past).

Yeah, that can be hard doing you're regular hair routine while the fam is there.

LoL, yea, it does look like baby poop. Last night was my second henna and after I mixed it I thought, man, if only this were some chocolate pudding/cake batter then, the grass smell got to me and I said wow, let me stop fantisizing b4 I actually eat it.

But when I ordered from sears.com recently, it took several hours to receive my confirmation. I usually copy and paste the last page where I complete my order and send it to my email just in case.

I have been hennaing my hair pretty regularly since I last checked in with this thread. I got quite a bit of it cut off in September and it was a little above my shoulders. Originally it was below BSL, now it is almost back to where it was before I cut it an I am hoping that it was the henna that allowed it to grow so fast. I tried my mixture with green tea last time and no ACV, it seemed to work pretty well. Does anyone else use green tea? if so how was your experience?

Back on Cones,so now my routine is,wash with Deva No-Poo every other day or so. Occasionally use 365 sulfate free, maybe use low sulfate shampoo mixed with conditioner once every two weeks are longer. I condition with Aussie Moist or HEHH. I style with a little GF TN,and finish up with tons of GN Pure Clean Smoothing Cream. No frizz...slippy, happy hair.

well originally I was doing it weekly until my hair got over conditioned. Then maybe once ever 3 weeks or so. Lately I have been noticing roots that were less red than the rest of my hair so I have been hennaing to cover them. It seems to be growing really fast. I just hennaed Saturday with green tea, I left it on for about 5-6 hours.

Also how long after you henna do you get orange tinted water when you wet your hair. I had done a dt with oil friday and when I rinsed I still got orange run-off, at that point it had probably been about a month since my last henna.

I make sure I have no "orange tinted water" before I even style my hair. I just keep washing and washing like my life depended on it. I did two hennas last week, and since then I don't see and type of orange in the water at all.

Do you think it could have been the oil you were using that may have looked orange?
it had to be the oil because up until that point I didn't get the orange tinted water. So is oil always supposed to rinse out henna regardless of how long it has been since you last hennaed? If that's the case, do you guys lighten your henna evertime you dt? getting it all out can be a challenge for me, I don't shampoo and I have a lot of really thick hair.
