Experiences with Henna?

I'm going to do my second henna this Friday. I'm going to use Indigo immediately after. I'm craving really black hair. I feel like the henna really did make my hair stronger and shinier. Hopefully I'll see even more benefits show up this next time!

Thanks for the colorfix and indigo info RiotCrrl and Clarita.

@Clarita- I tend to see some red as soon as I start mixing up the henna. I only leave it to dye release further for the amount of time I'm washing my hair before applying it. The first couple times I let it dye release in a warm place for a few hours and it demised. You couldn't see the effects even though I left it in overnight.

When I do the same without releasing the dye beforehand, I get red color that shows up surprisingly strongly on my dark hair. I think I leave it in 8 hours or so, but I'm not sure at which point my hair has had its fill of lawsone, lol.

Okay, I had an AMLA relapse. I was in for a rude awakening though because, this time I used Bhavani Amla powder for food instead of the one I used before, Hesh Amla for hair. The Bhavani one was so ANNOYING. It was like putting brown grits all in my hair and it was getting everywhere. LIttle gritty pieces were splattered everywhere and it just felt so, ew. It didn't smell bad though I must say. It smelled spicy and sweet. I don't think I'll be using it on my hair again though since it was EXTRA difficult to get the brown grits outta my head. The Indian stores I went to seemed to have run out of the Hesh Amla, I guess it is very popular. I may try Kalustayan's (however u spell it). Maybe I'll eat the Bhavani one. I shall see...

This thought just popped up in my head...does henna stain your sink/bathtub as you are rinsing it out?! I know it will stain clothing and towels and skin, but what about the tub? And the walls...dear lord if I got henna on the walls my mom would murder me.

I hope that all sounded about right, lol. HTH
Agreed, green stuff tends to get everywhere but it doesn't stain if you rinse it.

Hey Momo, what if anything, does amla do to your curl tightness? I read such wildly differing reports, I suspect it is a total YMMV thing, but I'm curious about yours.

I still haven't visited Kalustyan's to see if they have the Hesh Amla but I may try tomorrow.

What does YMMV stand for?
Sorry! Your Mileage May Vary, meaning that if we all used the same amla, very different things may happen.

It may depend on the curl tightness to begin with, I've seen a lot of folks with straighter or wavier hair saying that it increased their wave and gives them more volume. The result almost seems to reverse itself somewhere along the straight to very curly spectrum. I'm almost in the middle so I don't know what would happen!
Ah, that's good to know, thanks.

And just wanted to let y'all know that I purchased henna today from mehandi.com! I ordered the "Henna for African Hair" lol because I thought hey why not and it's a dollar cheaper than the Jamila. :P I ordered 500g which may only last me 2 hennas, but hopefully will last 3....this stuff ain't cheap.

The thing is, I'm getting a haircut June 21 so I don't want to waste henna by henna-ing now, when I'm just going to get a bunch of that henna'd hair cut off. And I have family staying until July 8 and I'd kinda rather not embarass myself by henna-ing when my grandma etc is here so I'll probably only henna after that. But we'll see...curiosity may overcome embarassment.

But yay! I'm excited!

Well ladies, I completed two henna treatments. My first treatment was this past Friday. I followed the usual instructions, mix, let dye release for 12 hours, put mixture in hair, and wrap with a clling wrap (without a heat source). I then put on a heavy wool hat on my head and let it sit on my head for three hours. I was determined not to get henna all over the place, because I didn't want it to stain anything other than my towel or shirt. I washed the henna out in the tub. No stains. I was happy with the results but it did turn my ash blonde dyed hair auburn. My natural dark hair (roots) had a hint of a cherry cola color going on. Immediately, I noticed that my HAIR STOPPED SHEDDING. That was my main goal. It wasn't until the next day that I saw how shiny my hair was. I then decided to henna again on Sunday because I heard that I would get even better results. After the second henna, I did notice a little more managability, more pourous, and hardly no shedding. My next treatment will be next month. I will also rinse my hair in the kitchen's metal sink. After my second henna, I noticed a stain spot on my bathroom sink. The henna didn't even sit on that spot for a long period of time. I did put bleach on it, but it is still (faintly) there. I hope within a short amount of time it will go away completely.
Okay I've decided to give henna another try after seeing Curlynikki's photo album and the gradual results she got. (She had something like 11 -12 treatments and their results). My 1st try w/ cassia made my hair dry like a rice crispie. I moisturized constantly for a week to compensate for the dryness. Tis time I'll use henna/ indigo (cause I want my natural black color), w/ chamomile tea and honey, and DT w/ Qhemet butter. I just ordered from Mehandi today so hopefully I can try it this week end. Hoping for the henna jackpot

Is there anyone who uses cassia on a consistent regualr basis? What are your results? I would think that with enough moisture hair would begin to hang more like many of the henna users speak of.

Hair Type: small 3c patch in the center, mostly 4a with a patch of 4b at my temples
Shampoo: Suave daily clarifying ( when I feel that need)
Conditioners: AOHSR, MM, olive oil

I want my henna to come in!!

While styling my hair today, I checked on my lone gray hair turned fiery red after millions of henna treatments. I swear I measured it at the beginning of the year and it was 2 inches or so. I can't remember exactly when I looked at it, but today I measured it and it was 8 inches long!!!! Um, I'm not sure what kinda growth that is, but it's either the henna or the vitamins or the protective styling, lol. No matter if I measured it at the end of last year or the beginning of this year, 6 inches is a ton, IMO.
just thought I'd share

If it's not bedtime yet, maybe you can lie down and watch a movie.
