Yeah... it's important to know that henna comes in ONE color. I made the mistake of getting a "black henna" tattoo once when I was in Vegas. I decided to google the product AFTER I had it done and got alot in info and pix with similar results to the one you referenced. Needless to say I was scared out of my mind but I was blessed not have any of the adverse affects. It was a lessoned learned, I now research products BEFORE I use them and try to get products that are natural.

I live in the eastbay and I know there are a lot of Indian shops in the Hayward and Fremont areas because of the large south asian population there. I purchased my henna from Cash Fabrics in south Hayward for about $2 for 200g. I was not able to find the brands listed on this site but I had great results with the henna I selected. The last of my stash has already been mixed and is in the freezer and I don't remember the name of the brand ....sorry.
As for cassia, I have only been able to locate the mountain brand version that comes in all the different color varieties. (remember to stick with the neutral to avoid all the harmful additives) I was able to find it at whole foods and the locations that I am aware of are downtown Oakland and in Berkley. I am 95% sure there is at least one Whole foods in S.F.

Cassia
Hey, I have an appointment with the hairstyler to get myself a brushing. I know, I know, I wasn't supposed to use heat on my hair, but I'm going to attend a wedding this weekend. Anyway, I've decided to boost my cassia treatment, I've already done it twice this week and was planning on doing it once more. I'm really afraid that all the heat might damage my hair. Hopefully, all these treatments will help!

wow, there's a lot of really useful information here! does anyone have a method for mixing henna & indigo to match your own hair color? i have a few grey hairs, and would like to cover them up without changing my overall hair color (dark brown, almost black). does using henna alone lighten dark brown hair? thanks.

Well, I henna'd and it came out ok. I think the honey had a negative effect on the process so I'll cassia this weekend with maybe olive oil. It's the only moisturizing substitute I can think of that has a thicker consistency than water. My hand in hair syndrome has led to orange fingertips which makes me think that my obessive rinse wasn't obsessive enough. If the cassia doesn't yeild softer results then I may have some henna to swap since I still have 100g left. Here's to hoping… I can't really say if my hair is stronger or sproingier for sure. What I'm seeing may be placebo effect so I'll do one more run before I sing it's praises.
I must say that Catherine's product shipped pretty quickly and was the soft fine powder that everyone spoke of. No twigs, leaves, or tree stumps!

question about dye release
I just got my henna in the mail and want to use it tomorrow afternoon after work. All the reading I've done on henna says to mix it with your liquid of choice and let it sit overnight. Will it be fine if it sits overnight and most of tomorrow, or should I wait 'til morning to mix it? I'm a little worried about there being too much dye release, or it getting funky or start going bad if I leave it out for too long.

My recipe:
2 parts indigo
1part henna
8 oz yogurt
generous amt EVOO
generous amt honey
some essential oil to kill indigo smell
My hair color comes out unchanged. Henna will add red but not lighten.

A few grey hairs? Oh-h. Henna alone w/o Indigo will turn your grey hairs a loud orange color. I'm 50% grey and use a henna/alma/indigo mix. 50% henna to 50% indigo adding 2 tablespoons of Alma. Tones down the orange. My hair looks dark red and it was originally brown and grey. If you only have a few greys then I guess you will be OK with orange strands. Henna can change your hair color, especially if you have greys. Also I left my henna mix sitting out longer last Friday because I got into watching the Olympics and did not put my mix in my hair until 2:00 a.m. instead of around 8:00p.m. This little difference really intensified my color uptake and colored my greys down to the roots dark red. Usually I have some orangey color close to the hairline. This time my color is a lot more even. I guess its good to leave the henna sitting longer if you want more color uptake. Best wishes and I hope this helps.

Henna Can Be Unpredictible on Grey Hair
Last month my henna session went haywire. Here is a photo showing a good example of what can happen. Photo shows dry hair with no product. You can really see the uneveness of the colors. I used 50-50 Indigo and Henna along with 1/2 cup of Alma for the session shown in the photo and left the mud in my hair overnight.
I re-did it Friday and it evened out. My hair is now dark reddish brown and much more even toned but shows red outdoors--used the exact same measurements and Jamila, Catherine's Indigo and Hesh Alma each time. What could cause such variation? I let the Henna sit out longer Friday because I watched the Olympics until 2 a.m. (13 hrs. vs. 18 hrs.) I guess if you let it sit a little longer (and it was very hot that day) you get a better dye release. What do you guys think? I'll add a new photo as soon as I can. My daughter borrowed my memory card reader.

from the info that i read, the dye release is relative to ur henna, the temperature in ur home and what u use to help release the dye. ex. i used rajasthani monsoon henna, temp in my house is roughly 71/72 degrees and i used tazo passion tea for release. i had a slight dye release after abou 8 hrs.

I fear that my henna treatments are making the hair on the top of my head straight. DO NOT WANT. I did one today and when i got out of the shower the front of my hair was all straight/ wavy.

Um. Holy freaking crap! I am a lifetime member of the cassia club! I just cassia'd with water and some evoo for 2-2.5 hours. All I did was rinse and the difference in my hair was instant. It was so soft that I didn't want to DT because I wouldn't be able to touch it. Who knows if I had to let the product build up(hennad 2x before, so so results) or if the honey I used dried me out OR if my hair just prefers cassia. I guess I'll find out the next time I henna. If I don't feel a difference then I'll stick with cassia.
Stupid DT and dryer keeping me from playing in my hair.
Kynnib, the curl pattern change may be temporary so don't fret just yet!

2nd Henna Experience
Hello, all. Well, today I had my 2nd henna experience. I was really pleased with my application as I had minimal mess and it really went smoothly.
This time I used H4H - Henna for African Hair which I recommend highly. This henna is a lot smoother and rinsed out a lot more easily that the Yemen that I used prevsiously. I also learned that this henna is supposed to give a more cooler red tone than the Yemen which is more auburn.
I mixed the henna with a combination of lemon and orange juice, water and apple cider vinegar and 2 t of cloves. I let the mix sit overnight and in the morning mixed with chamomile tea. I allowed the mix to sit on my head for 4 hours and went back to sleep. The mix was very heavy and gave me a slight headache.
I rinsed for about 15 minutes and then shampooed with Cream of Nature and slathered on a deep conditioner which I left in my hear for 6 hours.
As it is the first day, I still don't know about the outcome, but, I feel confident that it will be nice color.

i don't really like how this article ends on such a negative note. regardless of this woman and her child's experience, the article was pretty irresponsible about addressing the positive side of henna. if i didn't know jack about henna, after reading this, i would definitely stay away from all things henna too, as it certainly sounds too complicated to tell the difference between the good stuff and the evil stuff.
the least they could have done was printed a link to a site like www.hennaforhair.com so people could do their own research.

you can mix it in the morning and use it in the afternoon. you don't want the dye to start getting weak.
but, then again, some ppl let it release for 24 hours with no problem. i've done it both ways. either way, you'll be fine.

My husband (its so cool to say that, lol), is leaving town tomorrow morning...so....it's HENNA THURSDAY!!!! I'm going to mix it up and apply it tomorrow and leave it on as long as humanly possible. I'm in the mood for a double treatment, but my stash is low So, I'll have to do one mega treatment.
Happy Henna'ing Ladies!!!!!
