Experiences with Henna?

Like Tree61Likes

OK, I have been trying to finish reading this thread off and on for months. I really want to try Henna. However, I currently Aveda color. Last root touch up was in July. Has anyone applied henna over Aveda color?

TIA

I heenaed my hair last night & I dig it man.. my hair is noticeably stronger ( hardly any shedding breakage while combing after application... & I love the chocolate cherry hue of my hair. I mixed mine w/ lemon & lime juice. I let it sit for over 12 hours & then it sat on my hair for almost 6 hrs. I washed it out w/ a combo of ao island naturals & giovani 50/50 w/ a lil ao shampoo spiked in it. my hair was not dry , felt softer than usual after co washing,.. there was no marked loosening of my kinks, but it was def more manageable and a lil easier to comb through.... the "down side" to henna-ing my hair is the smell., which I masked with a lil evoo & avocado oil mixed w/cinnamon eo and my finger tips looks like ive been eating flaming hot cheetos.. I may try a lil peroxide & water to get my finger tips and palms back to their reg color

** for anyone in Chicago, I bought several boxes of jamila henna for 99 cents a box at patel bros. on Devon...
I tried Henna for the first time a couple nights ago and I have to say I like it...I mixed 200mg w/ 2cups of green tea and 4 tbl spoons of olive oil (maybe i was heavy with the oil, will use 2 tbl nxt time). Sat with it 2 hrs (could'nt stay longer). Washed with Chagrin valley poo bar and deep cond with Aubrey Organics Honey sucklerose. I was satisfied, with the color and the feel of my hair. Hardly any shedding or breakage especially after I tried cassia 2 weeks ago... Will be juggleing it along with Cassia...

On another note.. tomorrrow I have off work for Veteran's day so I'm a Henna head tonight

Jamila henna for $0.99!!! Will have to take a drive over there.

My relationship with henna did not start well. The first couple of applications, I lost a lot of hair (applying, rinsing and styling). My hair is in a better condition now and I've had a much easier time. I henna'd last night. Using a camomile tea helped because it's less acidic and not as harsh/drying on my hair. I colored my hair (Revlon Colorist) a lighter brown a year ago. That part of my hair remains to be the henna red. I can't see the red on my natural dark brown hair.

How long do you let cassia stay in your hair? I appreciate your help.^_^
I ordered my henna and I can't wait! Haven't decided the details of my first henna experience. Don't know what I'm gonna mix with or what, but I am EXCITED!!!!! The sad part is that I am travelling for work and won't able to do it until after the 21st! So, in the meantime, I will take any advise from you old pros......Spiral NC, Curly Nikki, you two are my henna heros and the whole reason this thread started. I 200mg of Catherine's Punjabi and 100mg indigo.....I am hoping for a nice deep auburn over my current color.

Nikki has your hair turned aubrurn? Also, is there a way to not dye your hair when you use henna. I want to use henna now instead of cassia. The benefits of henna outshine caissa. So can someone help me with this. I was wondering if i could mix it henna quickly and apply it to my clean hair detangled hair after mixing it. What do you all think? I appreciate your help in advance.

Tonight is henna night! Yippee! It's been a long time since my last henna - way too long. And this time I'm using Punjabi Prime instead of Jamila. I'll let you guys know how it goes. I'm still waiting for dye release.

A_la_Nap-tural, my hair is a medium dusty brown, and yeah - the red will definitely show. If you only want brown, try one of the mixes with henna and indigo from the HFH site.

Oodles, what henna/indigo ratio do you plan to use?

I'm also a cone user still, but not sure what I should use to get the henna out of my hair well. What do you suggest? AAAAANNNNNNDDDDDD, how did your henna go? It was so long you are almost a renewed henna virgin!

I was a bit pressed for time when I made my mix, so I didn't get to use the tea . I used ACV. I should have cleared my hair out the day before too. I hadn't detangled in days, so that slowed me down a bit when it came time to apply the henna - lesson learned.

I use some cones too, Oodles, so I clarify before applying henna so that the cones won't block any of the dye. As for rinsing - I rinse with water until most of the henna is out, then I mash VO5 conditioner in and rinse...again and again. I can go through most of the bottle. Sometimes I'll do a light shampoo to be sure it's out. If I have time I deep condition. But sometimes I'll just put in a leave-in conditioner and be done with it.

I 'm happy with the results. I don't have the doll hair effect back yet - that will take a couple more hennas. But the front five or six inches of my hair is deep coppery red, which matches my previously hennaed hair more and just looks richer. Yay!

My boyfriend helped me out by giving me a long overdue trim (I haven't trimmed in almost a year). I took off about an inch and a half all over. My ends look nice and fat now.

If you're so inclined, maybe you could do a test with the 50/50 henna and indigo on a small lock of hair and see how it comes out? I'm not experienced with hendigo, as it's called. In fact, I'll be asking you for advice, because I may hendigo my boyfriend's hair in the near future.
