shingling works!!!

I like the NP site still because it is informative. I care not to post often and I try to watch what I say. It is funny to hear them rant, I get a kick out of it. Yeah, hair is just hair it is not that serious. If someone wants to perm their hair that is their business not mine, got my own problems, LOL!! I love this site more than others but I try to checkout as many out as possible, never know what I might learn.

I must say though that I always lurk in the Other life topics and the Culture boards. Despite their divisive (IMO) stance about hair, there are some extremely intelligent and insightful women over there.

Lalapixie, I wouldn't worry if I were you. Now that you know, you won't make the same mistake if you choose to go back over there. We know you're not a troll.

I used to love that site. I agree there are some very intelligent black women over there and it is refreshing. But sometimes I think they go over board with the verbal assaults against some of the newer members who dont know any better (or they didnt read the rules). So I stay hushed and read what I need. I do like the culture board alot as well as the homemade and store bought products sections, so I limit my perusing to those areas.
I have kinks, coils and curls on this head.

As a member of the other site I highly respect their mission statement. However this is not the first time the members have gotten heated over curl definition. Truth be told topics of that nature have appeared since the site first began. It only takes one thread, whether innocently started or not, to get miscontrued. Then all hell breaks loose and before you know it the floodgates open and everyone comes in with their opinions. The one question I ask myself is do these women carry themselves like this in their everyday lives? Some of the comments go way too far but everyone has a voice so it can't be helped.

I've been wearing my hair natural for far too long to get all up in arms over how someone else chooses to do theirs. If shingling works for you then do ya thing. Personally my hair is way too fragile to be handled with a fine tooth comb so that the coils will hang just right.

I really feel for those of you who've left because you didn't feel comfortable there. I refuse to let someone I haven't met face to face dictate how I should do my hair or how it should look. My hair texture suits me just fine and if someone else disagrees with that then the problem is theirs, not mine.
Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.
DP, sorry!

I know that here, we support women whatever the state of their hair, and I respect that too. Doesn't mean I agree with everything that's posted, but that's okay. I also don't agree with every post on NP, but that's okay too. Because there is no "one board" on which I would agree with every poster, I belong to several boards, each with a different mission and comprised of different women.

I always make it a point to read a bunch of posts of any new board or email group I join before I post to get the vibe of what's acceptable and what's not for me to post, and so far that's worked pretty well for me.

Sorry to get off your topic lalapixie (about shingling). I look at shingling as a styling option (as I stated on NP too) and it's something I'm willing to explore at least once after I BC. I know you probably didn't mean any harm with your post, but once I saw how you'd worded a few phrases in your post (I'm sure innocent), I knew all heck was going to break loose on NP.

glad it's not just me. Geez, i've been blasted SO many times for standing up for people that want different options-curls,relaxers,ironing hair all of it. we dont need another layer of separation in our community and i found nappies to be quite judgemental..until I came here

it's sad, i've even been locked out after beginning a post. go figure? so,you're not alone.like the others said, i like to lurke-but i find myself less and less over there for those reasons-as well as poor access.

Here's my take on the whole curl thing:

I think a tough pill for many of us to swallow is that some people do not think natural type 4 hair (of any range) is pretty. But that's ok. Just how some people are attracted to say only black people with very dark skin, and generally do not find asian men attractive. It's not really PC to say or think these things, but the reality is that we all have our preferences.

It can be difficult to get over the idea that not everyone thinks natural hair is beautiful - especially when you are surrounded by people (online and otherwise) that support the idea that curls/kinks are beautiful. I know I've fallen into the trap of "what do you mean naturalness isn't beautiful. It HAS to be!". We cannot expect everyone to have the same values and perception of what is considered beautiful. Is it predjudice? Possibly yes, possibly no.

Now some of these preferences are not welcomed to be expressed in some circles - but again their house their rules. I'm sure there are people here on NC.com that straighten their hair and would never wear their hair curly. We dont turn those folks away (unless, of course they do somethng drastic to break the rules of posting).

What I hope is that whether or not people believe curly is the only way to go, or if they want to wear their hair in the biggest fro possible, or flatiorn their hair every day - that those choices, prefrences of beauty and everything in between are respected (even if they are not liked).
The thing that I noticed was that everyone focused on the "curls that deserve attention" phrase and ran with it. No one really asked Lalapixie if she was dissing nappy hair - they assumed she was. I took what she said as meaning that people have naps and curls. Their naps get attention and the curls they have (or may have) also deserve attention. I didn't hear her saying that curls are more deserving of attention. But it was twisted to seem like that.
