Default Coconut oil makin my head itch

My head is on fire. It feels like I have chiggers in my damn scalp. Does anyone else itch like this with coconut oil or another oil?

yes! my hair loved coconut oil, but my scalp hated it. i had extreme itching to the point where i had scalp tenderness.

oh, and cocoa butter in any form breaks me out in contact dermatitis.

100% pure aloe vera gel (the real viscous kind, not the thick hair gel type) breaks me out in little bumps on my face.

That used to happen to me also..so instead of using it as a sealing (it was somehow very heavy too) i use it in my hot oil treatments or as a pre poo and it works great like that. But for sealing i use almond oil is not heavy and it doesn't each plus it gives me a pretty luster

My head itches alot and sheds when my scalp is clogged. Too much product, not a good cleansing shampoo etc. Are you applying it to your scalp?

When I apply it. I just add it to my hair lengths.

Yeah I use it during my straight styling to like grease my scalp, but the **** is itchy. It absorbs in and doesn't sit there, but for the next few days it's itchy as heck. I don't think I'll be doing that anymore. I like the shine it gives, but I'll just use it like you say and apply it to the length.

Default Itchy

I did a search for "oil" and "itchy" to see if anyone else had this problem. People always say you should moisturize you scalp but when I put coconut oil on mine I thought I'd have to tear my head off. I eventually went to using it as a pre-poo and that worked better.
But tonight I put Castor Oil on my scalp. Big mistake. Within minutes, I was dying. I had stick my head under the bathtub fawcet to get any relief. My hair loves oils but my scalp hates them. They make dandruff worse for me too.

something about that title makes me giggle...

I don't have a problem with the real oil, but for some reason when I leave suave coconut conditioner on, I get the itchy scalp too. Becareful with placing in your hair period, because if you play in your hair it may re-distribute to your scalp.

Hmm... My scalp has been kind of itchy since I've started using this and castor oil although I haven't put it directly on my scalp. It hasn't been an unbareable, but it does itch and I haven't had that problem before.

Great, now what do I use this stuff for now?

Maybe you're allergic to coconut oil, or there's buildup on your scalp. I find that when my scalp pores are clogged, my scalp tends to get really itchy. I just massage my scalp with a little Afroveda Shikakai Hair Growth Elixir and the shikakai cleans the pores. My scalp feels better in about 2 minutes.

If you're allergic, you could try combining it with another oil or steep some herbs in it such as amla or shikakai, to add cleansing/strengthening/moisturizing properties to the oil. HTH!

Yes you are probably allergic as I am.
What i did to solve the allergic reaction problem was heat up the coconut oil in a hot pan and let it cool.

Problem solved! It's weird. I'm not sure exactly why it works, but it does.

Which ever property of the coconut oil that you were allergic to was changed due to the heat. I remember from chemistry class that heat chemically changes a substance. That may be the reason you can tolerate it now. JMO.

I think coconut oil sorta dried out my hair unless I just used it as a pre-poo. Olive oil is better for me. But ever since i started using MSM my scalp is all tingly? And I would consider thinking it's build up since I don't shampoo ever, but if I scratch there's no prod buildup and I do ACV rinses? I dunno...so random how everyone's hair hates diff things.

This is 100% accurate for me. I don't think I could've written it out this well though, lol. But this articulates what happens to my hair. If I leave a PS in too long, my head itches like crazy! Clogged scalp from the products I used for the PS and my scalp needs to be washed.

Haven't heard this word since I was a kid

Castor and almond oils make me itch like crazy.

i even got hives from the almond oil one time.

But, I love castor oil so I just seal with it.

Default Having the same problem!

Hey, Ive been having the exact same problem with castor oil.
I decided i wanted long thick hair, so i went and bought jamaican black castor oil and applied it to my scalp everyday, not thinking to wash it out or heat it up. After about a week my scalp started tingling, i didnt see any growth. The next day my scalp was on fire! I didnt know what to do so i washed it, yet the itching wouldnt go away. Since then ive had around 5-10 washes as this promblem was around 2 months ago. But... the itch is still here!! My scalp feels really bumpy and dry and i cannot stop itching. It got so bad all i used to mousturize was water! I was thinking of using coconut oil on my scalp but now as ive seen your post (and many others), im not so sure. Ive heard that both castor oil and coconut oil have special acids that get rid of bacteria and fungi and that explains why the itching happens because your scalp is cleaning itself, bit surely this doesnt happy for 2 months?
Anyway, maybe you should try using the coconut oil in your scalp before washing, so you will not have any itchyness. If thats not for you, then simply use it in your hair to protect it from drying out. Ive only used coconut oil with petrolatum in it which i soon found out was not good for you. But i have been doing LOADS of research!

PS: Still itching

I never specifically apply oil directly to my scalp and haven't since going natural again in 13 years. Even my hairdressers only apply products to my hair. Then again I do leave a maximum of 3 days before putting water on my hair.

I read a natural hair book years ago implying there was no need if you wet your hair regularly enough. I only have dry scalp if I get caught out in the rain. So if it rains and I get caught I have to wash/cowash my head.

I do use oils like olive oil a lot and coconut oil but I found my hair condition reflects my diet so if I'm in good health the styling products I use are enough.

It tends to make my scalp itchy so i jus put it on my hair-mid shaft to ends and it helps.
