I'm Bunnin' It...a grow-out challenge of sorts :)

Thanks CurlyNikki,

Its only like that before i leave the house. by 10am i'm at work and it's a totally different head of hair. And the shrinkage uggggghhhh. I'm hoping if i grow it out it'll get heavier and hang better. I'm sick of people at my job asking me if i cut it every other day. any advice on the trimming? i'm still in search of a nice thick leave in or moisturizer. i used to love hair mayonnaise (the yellow stuff) but after finding this site i realized the ingredients were bad.
I do that one sometimes and just call it a cinnamon bun as that's how I leanred it. I just have to watch how hard I twist, because, overdone, it doens't seem to do my ends much good with all that turning. A ligter twist and a couple of booby pins, and I'm good. I keep forgetting I can't twist like a straight haired person - different hair shaft. I just leanred so many of these styles from straight haired pics. There aren't a ton of tutorials with curly buns and stuff out there.

I have 3c hair that I haven't straightened in over 5 years. It's just past shoulder length when dry, and almost waist length when pulled straight.

Hey ladies

I did my bi-weekly assessment of my ends and I was pleased with what I found. I found about 2 splits...4 knots This is HUGE. I always have a ton of splits and more knots than I can count. I'm shedding less and tangling is a thang of the past

So, my question:

What are your ends looking like? If you had issues like mine, do you think they're improving??
The Blog: www.curlynikki.com

For me, so far so good. I did do a search and destroy end-trimming mission about 3 days into the bun challenge though so they should still be good now. I left my hair out overnight last night and slept on my satin pillowcase and they seem to be in good shape still.

I'm just hoping that I'm not over stretching my hair because I get splits very easily and the last thing I want to be doing is trimming off my ends every time they grow a lil bit.

What I've been doing for the past few weeks is keeping my buns in 6 days or more, 24 hours a day with occasional breaks. I don't rinse often, just once or twice a week. I apply a little bit of water and a dab of conditioner to the ends as needed (could be daily or every other day), and bun that bad boy up.

I just can't tell if I've had any growth yet (could be misleading cuz the buns stretch my 3c's way out), but then I'm not known for being patient.. I want long hair and I want it now, and I don't wanna wear a wig or extensions to get it.. lol

My staples: Mane n Tail (cowash), Garnier Fructis Sleek n Shine (leave in condish), Grapeseed oil or shea butter (sealing), Organic Root Stimulator Elasticitea (leave-in condish & light hold)
I trimmed a month and a half before the challenge and I checked the ends yesterday and what do you know no split ends or knots yay. I am wearing plaits so I oil with jojoba oil at nights and I put a little jessiecurl WDT on the ends once every three nights and I also co-wash plaits every 3 days. During the days I wear a plait bun. Doing good, doing good.

i was doing great with my ends until i messed around and did a shrinkage experiment. i had so many knots, and the sad thing is it was preventable. so, i snipped split ends and knots all last week. i think i found most of them.

my henna arrived today. hopefully, between it and my cholesterol concoction weekly DT i'll need less products on my hair to maintain moisture. and with fewer products comes less manipulation of the hair.

bekkapoo, i too was anxious when i first starting the bunning challenge. i was so excited and the short-term change in my hair health that i expected it to grow like a weed. i think it has grown, but it could just be my imagination :-). i'll have been in protective styles for two months in a few weeks, so hopefully i can see a difference then.

Hey Curlymami..
I just checked again today.. I still have splits. I wonder what the heck is going on. Maybe I should get back on the protein wagon. I trimmed off what I could see, which was a bit trying since they were all mostly in the back. I cut less than half an inch, so I'm hoping that will keep my ends from knotting and breaking for a little while again..

If I damp bun or wet bun, I put the ends underneath to keep them damp and moisturized. I've been having luck with putting some Knot Today on the ends if I do this, even better than I was getting with oil.

My ends have the same number of splits that they had in the beginning, which is good, as that means no new ones, lol.

I've had a few single strand knots, but I have always had these and have no idea how to avoid them.

I want to do an S&D, but am getting color on Thursday. I figure it's just better to sacrifice the already split end to the color as opposed to trimming and then coloring. I'll S&D after that.

As long as I condition every third day, I am good. I think I'm getting better overall hair health. But, I can't get lazy, I have to remember the conditioner or my caopy feels like crap.

I am torn between missing seeing my hair out and enjoying being "lazy" by putting it up. It certainly saves time putting it up. At least this challenge is forgiving enough to allow for the "out" day.

I'm trying to stay with it but I miss wearing my hair out. As far as my ends they have always been good with the exception of the single strand knots like redcelticcurls.

Thanks smokindiva for the compliment, I wash once a week with poo (no sls) and I don't cowash. When I spray my leave in before my work out I only spray it on the hair and not the scalp. I try to keep everything off my scalp.

Missmonie, I had that same funky smell with wet buns in the past before I went natural.

i hope i'm not cheating by joining so late but i've offically started curlynikki's bun challenge. i've been needing this. my hair has been sho since the heats really been attacking. i haven't worn it out nearly as much as i used to durng summer. i will also stop using a brush for the remainder of the summer. this will be hard because i always use a brush to slick my hair back. but i'm up for finding alternative ways to achieve a sleek bun. good luck to all who've joined!!!!!

Today I'm cheating on my bun. This morning I had it all bunned up. But, I live close to where I work (1/2 block) so at my lunch break I did a quickie braid out with some Aphogee Keratin spray and my setting lotion onto my dry (but conditioned and lightly greased ends from last night) hair.

It actually came out pretty well. I'm gonna have to take a picture when I get home.. yay.

I'm not sure if the buns are contributing to my split ends or breakage.. I hope not because I would really like to get the length going.

Hi!!! I am a newbie and would also like to join this challenge. You ladies are an inspiration!!! I love wearing my hair up during the hot sweltering months in the south. I usually wear it up everyday anyway except special occasions and Sundays. I just need ideas about styles. I too have some hair line issues. Being 4A relaxed and trying to stretch for at least 12 weeks presents a challenge esp balancing hair line sleekness and an attractive look. I have some Flexi-8's and I need an idea as to how to use protective hairstyles w/ this product. Thanks!!!
Welcome shake.....very pretty hair.Welcome Garner.....There is a thread on flexi 8 if you search properly.....you will both find lots of encouragement and tips from these ladies......good luck in the challenge

Hola Chicas

So, after going through a phase of extreme euphoria (completely elated by my new found growth after 3 months of buns), then denial and frustration (it couldn't be the buns), and finally acceptance (after looking at the facts), I'm ready to embark on another 3 months of protective styles. But, I don't want to do it alone. As always, I need the support of my fellow curly ladies

I bunned faithfully for 3 months and when I finally let it down, I was shocked to see thicker, shinier, longer hair. My ends have never looked this good..not in all the years I've been natural. I've worn my hair out since 2006 and never was able to retain length- I was stuck between SL and APL for an eternity. My hair grows really fast, but was splitting and snapping off just as quickly. Bunning must be the answer, as it is now grazing BSL. I spoke with a few long haired naturals, and most agreed that bunning (and other protective styles) is the way to go, and aided in the growing out of their waist-length hair. Ladies who hair isn't long enough to bun can join too...twists, braids and any other updos are allowed.

These are the guidelines (feel free to tweak them to meet your needs):

-Start Date- ASAP
-End Date- September 30
-Take a 'stretched' pic to show current length
-Bun or PS 5 days out of the week
-DT at least once per week (with or without heat)
-Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
-Check in for moral support periodically
-Take pics of cute earrings, headbands and other accessories to jazz things up a bit and inspire others

I'm going to do low and high buns and do my best to avoid putting undue strain on my hair. I'm going to wear my hair in a twist-out on the weekends (if I feel like it) to give my hair a break from being up. I'll use satin scrunchies (purchased from Ulta) and bobby pins that have the protective covering on the ends. I will re-moisturize every other day, and I plan to only use my fingers to manipulate the hair into the bun.

Anyone interested? We'll do the reveal at the end of September

people have different bun routines. some (co)-wash only once a week, others (co-)wash more or less frequently. it's really up to you.
