Is it too late to join? Count me in, mainly because I get lazy with the summer heat.
I am one of the people who can't pull my hair tight when it's wet, it shrinks about 75% when dry, so wet ponytails make my head hurt as they dry. Strangely, it only happens when I make puffs, if I braid the ponytail then I have no problems.

U R Not Alone!
MoMo....I have the same issue....my hair line is very thin and fragile....I've complained about it several times on this board, I even started using boundless tresses. Anyway, I was weraing my hair up with a phony pony because my hair is not long enough or thick enough to do a bun with out looking like a duck's tail...last night I noticed my edges were strating to snap, so believe me you not the only one with this dilemma. Just don't want U to feel alone.

Thank you FCC and Maria. It's like, the hairline is the most important part of the head and w/o it, it would be hard to do anything. I've been practicing ways to put less stress on my hairline so that it will get better, and I'm making some progress Instead of slicking my hair SO MUCH with that denman brush, I mostly try using my fingers. I tend to overdose with that denman by brushing the crap outta my ponytails/edges to stay down. Come to find out, it actually looks cool using my fingers . Let's see how long this lasts. I will keep trying variations so my hair wont get stuck in a rut. For example, partial ponytails; taking a break from the elastic headbands and using the plastic ones more often; trying the half head wrap thing and putting my hair in an updo (that way I don't have to do anything to my hairline). I will post pics probably in a week or two to show my variation progress.

Your new bun pics are so hot. That bun of yours is HUGE =-O. I am still in shock @ your amazing hair growth. That is amazing. I was lookin' @ the pics last night and got the munchies from the buns cause it reminds me of a huge scoop of chocolate icecream.
RCC
OMG, your bun pics remind me of art. Plus your hair color is so darn vibrant. You got skills!!!!!! You should do a video on youtube or something!!!!! =-O

I guess in theory it would make sense, but honestly I have been bunning my daughter's hair every day since she was little and her hair is down to her waist. My hair grows faster when I'm putting it up in a ponytail and not fussying with it too much. Like Nikki said, everyone is different so I would just monitor it closely to make sure its suitable for you.
Plus I do everything Nikki tells me to do. She'd make an excellent sales person LOL

Thanks. I'm glad to have someone to relate to as far as that is concerned. The song "You are not alone" by Michael Jackson is playing in my mind right now, LMAOOOO!!
Does boundless tresses help you with that?
I saw your most recent pics w/ the long aid gel, and your hair is bangin' girl. The texture reminds me so much of mine.

Thank you momo! I can't take much credit for the color though since it' not my real one, lol.
Most of the styles are not super hard, but some of them just look different because I had put my hair up curly instead of straight - although I have a bunch of pics of updos after a blowout.
Weirdly enough, the one that gets the most attention is this one, and that is one of my easier ones that I got out of the book Strictly Curls.
Basically it is three little buns close together. I grab the top part of my hair, sort of like I was making a part from the top of one ear all the way around to the top of the other ear. I hold it in a ponytail and then twist it and make a little bun out of the twist. I use a couple of bobby pins to secure it.
The bottom part of my hair - I separate into right and left halves and make little buns out of them. So,I have one little bun on top of two little buns to make sort of a triangle. I don't make strict parts when I section my hair becuase I often do this updo with first or second day hair and I really can't part it neatly without tangling it. I sort of just use my fingers to get it into imprecise sections.
In the pic, I decorated it, so it just looked more interesting.
If I leave more space between the buns and don't decorate it, it turns out like this
I have a similar v-type hairline that you do. Honestly, I don't know if I get breakage there or not. I often have fine baby hairs there that I wish would lie flat, but I just have learned to either let them be or just put my hair up wet. If I pull to control them, I just get a headache and the bun hurts. It's not as neat that way as I'd like, and there are fuzzies (like you see in the plain buns pic) but I just try to ignore them because I haven't found a good way to control them, lol. If I am putting my hair up dry, I just use my fingers. I am comb and brush stupid on dry hair...

FCC, I really like your bun. I don't have to patience to get that smooth look on top and up front like that. I just let it fuzz, lol.

Thanks RCC, I co-wash with AOHSR and applied shea moisture direct leave without any other products...oh yeah hmmm I brushed ( I know, I know). Brushing bad, but it hasn't bothered me. In this pic the top was 100% dry but the bun was still wet.

I second that. FCC, your bun is awesome and so shiny.
RCC
I wish my hair would fuzz and look like yours around the edges. Some people with tight curly edges like mine can pull the look off. My edges would just look like a hot mess if I didn't smooth them down. Just think of taco meat or small lint balls around my face and on the back of my neck. Round my way, we callem beady beez, or buckshots, lol.

I'm in too
When I was little my hair grew very long. My mom never put anything into my hair, no leave-ins, gels etc. Wash day was once a week and that was it..but I remember that I always wore my hair in ponytails or buns..
I really think that bunning is the key to long hair for me..don't know why I didn't recognize this earlier

OK, I'm all set to start tomorrow. New fotki album all set with reference length pics and all that.
Curlynikki, I used your scrunchie version of a sock bun for a military gig earlier today, and it really worked well. It felt so much nicer than the traditional sock bun, and it still looked fine. No annoying hair pulling at my nape either! I have another gig tomorrow, so I'll use it again to start my challenge, although I may switch to your double scrucnhie bun afterwards since that one is even more comfortable. I just can't wear that big of a bun in uniform, lol.

RCC your hair is beautiful and I enjoyed your hair bun pictures. Especially the picture with the flowers in your hair.
FCC, I love your hair bun too! So pretty! I don't think I can do the sock bun with curly hair yet. Don't think its long enough yet.

I can't stop staring @ your bun pics in your fotki. =-O Did you use a sock or a scrunchi (I'm not sure if that's spelled right)? This new girl back in the dayz @ HS used to always come to school with a perfect bun and we asked her secret (well we beat it outta her cause she wasn't cooperating ...jus kidding...a lil jokey joke) and she said it was a regular old sock. That's the first time I had heard about sock buns. She had a perm though so I never thought I could do one back then. Man, I've gained alot of knowledge on this site (even though I don't plan on doing those types of buns right now). My friend may like to here about this.

awwww shucks thanks guys...nope no sock bun here...I didn't even know what those where until I came here. My hair is shoulder length wet, but I guess I perfected the bun over the years and I rarely use pins.....I just grab hair in a ponytail and twist and use scrunchie to hold it.

by default...i wore my hair in a bun all of last week during a trip to NYC. I just didn't feel like being bothered with the hair....so I think I will try this challenge too. i need to take an official length pic, but I know it's APL when stretched (in the back) and chin to shoulder length (in the front)
