What to use for a braid out

Like Tree1Likes

I'm trying to wear my hair in a braid out, but no matter what I do the style won't hold. It will be a nice wavy pattern at first, but then throughout the day it will start to lose that pattern.

I have tried to use gel, but that just makes my hair dry and the gel flakes. I have used some lemon and lime that I mixed together, but all that does is make my hair shiny and soft (not that that is a bad thing )

What products do you ladies use and suggest? Does using water work just as good as using a product? Thank you for your suggestions.

Oh, and can someone tell me about those Jessie products? Do they actually work?

this is been happening to me too lately!!! ladies, please help....last product i used was sheaM leave-in, Curls By Sister Smith Wet Set Pudding, and SIF.

i've done braidouts using coconut oil only! i had my hair done in cornrows, wore them for a few days and then took it out. another time i did a braidout from boxbraids using products from my asha, which included coco de leche, sun kissed and mane attraction.

but you can also use a hair cream or butter, something with a bit of heft to it if you know what i mean.

when i used to do braidouts, i used setting lotion and grease (of course you can substitute a non-mineral oil based heavy moisturizer). i achieved braidouts from box braids, and it helps to have each section saturated with product for the sleekest look and firmest set. if you want more fluff and less sleek then use less setting lotion/more dilute setting lotion.
natural since 1998. trying to adapt to this midwest weather while still keeping it simple. current length: MBL (stretched)

To get braidouts that last, I have to leave the braids in for a couple of days. This is the same with my twist outs. Nothing I use gets them really defined but time. Mostly because my hair takes like 2 days to dry.

AS for miss jessies...there are several threads around about the products. Just do a quick search and you should find several of them!

I've used pure coconut oil in the past. It really held the style and moisture for days on end. I did find it was a bit greasy. I know use a combo of several things. I section my hair piece by piece and that's how I apply products for a twist or braid out. I start with a leavin conditioner, then I apply a homemade moisturizer (a combo of a little this and a little that), I then apply IC Fantasia gel and twist or braid. BTW I do this at night. The next morning I spray on SIF and go. I leave the twist or braids in for a couple of days then take them apart. I have a LOT of definition. I just spritz with the SIF and apply moisturizer everynight. In the morning I just shake and go.

I've never done a braid-out, but I'm assuming they're similar to twist-outs...my 2nd fav style of the summer 08

I saturate my hair in conditioner and moisturizers (as Curlymami said) and twist. I only leave the twists in over-night (I usually do them around 6pm and take them out at 11am the next day). It really doesn't matter how much of the Jessicurl, Deva One C and SIF I use...my hair comes out fluffy but defined each time. I love this combo

Coconut oil also sounds like something I would use. Where do I buy coconut oil? Can I just make it by putting it in a blender? I did this with the lemon and lime and got nice results.

I'm sorry ladies. I hope I'm not getting on your nerves by asking all of these questions. I'm just trying to get back into the swing of things.

I like to do the braids at night like curlynikki and taken them down in the morning. Oh and by the way, curlynikki, I am so jealous of your hair! It's gorgeous!

long lovey locks has a product especially for braid outs. Its called Braid Boyeaux (I think thats how u spell it) it worked really nice in my hair, but her prices have gone up and I had to use so much of it, the bottle didnt last long enough.

I love Twist Out by My Honey Child. I usually twist my hair dry or damp (after a work out), this is the only product that even with my hair damp, will be completely dry in the morning even if I dont twist it until 11pm. It does build up though, so needs to be rinsed out every few day, but I work out daily so I need to do that anyway.

Last night I tried using conditioner for the braid out and it worked really good. The only thing I didn't like about it was how the conditioner has a hint of white build up on my hair. I'll have to find a conditioner that is not so heavy. Thank you ladies for your help.
