Going overboard and taking natural hair to the extreme

I remember when the founder of np.com was an active member on this site. There is a very good reason why np.com was created. Oh yes.

Anybody who criticizes np's mission statement and purpose just does not understand. Most of the veteran posters have moved on, but the fundamentals remain- for good reason.

Originally, when the aforementioned site was created, I didn't agree with many of the posters or the so-called 'militancy' I found on the site until I had my own hair epiphany. You either get it or you don't, and no one can make you get it.

For those who do not get it, np.com's filter (for 'perm',' press', etc. ) was meant as an inside joke. Too bad the effort was lost on many.

and how could the masses understand an inside joke? sounds contradictory to me. but i think the filters do serve as a harsh does of reality, which is a good thing. its just annoying. the way the filters here are annoying (to me).

another common scenario that i didn't like was how certain people would get cornered and tongue-lashed for daring to want to create or define curls. that "obsession" implied that one wasn't embracing the natural properties of her highly textured hair and still had residual hair "issues" to deal with. YET, those very same tongue-lashers were creating posts about how to combat shrinkage because they had 6 inches of hair that only looked like 2 inches. they were doing things such as banding daily to show length and were applying ridiculous layers of styling products to weigh down their hair so that it would hang down and not stick up and out. oh, but they didn't have hair issues.

there was actually a nasty topic a while back about those who relied too heavily on headbands to sport their afros. yes, it got that ridiculous over there. it was suggested or maybe flat-out stated (can't remember) that if you can't leave the house with an unadorned wash-and-go or picked-out afro, you still have hair issues.

topics like that were allowed to occur. but if someone shared that she straightens her hair in order to cut it, oh woe was she. she'd be promptly directed to a sticky about the dangers of heat (in addition to getting at least a couple of snarky remarks), which would cause defensiveness and a flaming topic OR the topic would be closed by the moderators so that no one could even reply to her.

They spell p.erm that way because if you spelled it the regular way it turns "perm" and "relaxer" into "chemical fire cream"

I don't like sites that do such censoring. It's simplistic and indicates they don't trust their readership.

LMAO what is the name of the site? This is too funny!
the nappy nazis over there run that thing like it's OZ or something instead of stinking hair forum. ah...no matter where you go you will always find people in power struggles with themselves.

I tell stories about different things said or done to me as a natural because I never had these incidents happen when I was relaxer. And they happen a lot more than I ever mention. Well one poster called me a liar and a few others chimed in, although they had never said it before, then all of a sudden they STOPPED talking to me period. I had a homemade challenge going on and most of the women just drop and stop posting in it period. So I read when I want some info and maybe ask a question other then that I don't go there much anymore. What I couldn't undersand is why would I lie about how I've been treated when it comes to natural hair? I live in an area where majority of these women are relaxed or weave up and when they see my napps they either make a nasty ass comment or point and laugh.

i appreciate the intentions and the motivation that the owner had when creating the site. but it almost seemed cultish to me in that women who were only a month or two into membership over there all of a sudden became preachy, as though they'd been chemical-free their whole lives.

so many people over there forgot that just a few weeks prior, they were in the same boat and had the same hair concerns and hangups as the people they talk down to. and it was pervasive in numerous threads and difficult to avoid. i stepped out of the majority of hair topics and gravitated toward the nonhair boards and eventually stopped logging on. i lurk every once in a while, but i don't go over there much anymore.

i appreciate women having a new-found love of their God-given hair texture. but i think that excitement and rediscovery causes some people to forget that they used to relax and straighten, they used to be ashamed of new growth showing, they used to use commercial shampoos and styling products, they used to avoid rain and humidity, they used to devote half a day sitting in a salon, etc. how soon, how soon they forget!

oh, and the censoring drove me crazy. i thought that was inconsiderate to the members and was borderline juvenile.

if you dont agree with the vibe then maybe it aint for you lol lurk instead that way you can pick and choose what you want. easier for everybody!

But by trying to bully black hair product manufacturers into selling up and pushing noncompliant ones out of the market by duplicating their products and arranging themselves into Korean gangs collectively refusing to stock the trusted original brands made by these more independent-minded black companies, and thus not giving the consumers the choice, the access to these products, including popular brands, is cold, dirty and sneaky.
