Default Questions: Routine, hair health, products

Basically to make this as short as possible.... I just wanted to start a thread that would help me promote hair health and growth of course. I am new to my curly hair and go back and forth from curly to straight... I am a Product Junkie and try to take great care of my hair. So, with wearing it curly, I am not sure what is good and not. I have been addicted to the board for about 2 months now and I am using devacurl No Poo, deva curl one condition, DevaCurl
B- Leave-in, KCCC, and DevaCurl AnGEL.
My goal is for FRIZZ FREE curls... to boost the lack of curl on the left side of my head(sooo aggravating) and keep it moisturized so if you think something works better let me know... or what helps it grow and best for wearing both styles... Bottom line... I need help... Thanks ladies!!!!

Welcome!

If you are experiencing trouble with frizz it could be down to your application method. Have you tried sectioning and smoothing and raking. Here's a video of this method:

http://www.curlisto.com/new-stylingy...ky%20curls.htm

Also, I noticed in your fotki your hair has a lot of straight ends, maybe trimming them could add a little more spring to your curls and help them to form better.

Hi and welcome to NC! I agree with Jeamaria...I could recommend some other things to do but I don't want to cause confusion or overwhelm you with alot of information...I would suggest the rake and smooth method as Jeamaria already mentioned but I recommend you use a moisturizing conditioner...This method has worked wonders for me! Not everything works for everybody so I say just take your time and experiment and find what works for you...Sectioning was too much work for me and seemed to cause frizz but it may work well for you because everybody's hair is different...I wanted to also add that you may want to try deep conditioning treatments 1-2x per week as I believe it will help prevent tangling and keep your hair moisturized and strong! HTH

Thanks guys!!!I will definitely do that Jeamaria I heard about Giovani 50/50 conditioner and I went to Whole Foods super excited about getting it, then I saw there were 2 options... I was like...Hmm... well which one? lol So... I didnt get it. Is the Smooth as Silk or whatever a good one?
Frizzcurls427....Please feel free to overwhelm me... I also heard Jessicurl weekly deep treatment was great... Also BB products. Do you all agree? If so what BB products? Here's a big question...what will work for laying down the sides of my hair(the edges) If I do it at night I will tie it down and it will be flat in the morning, but what if I dont have time?
I;m sure there will be more questions to follow, so I am going to go ahead and apologize now. Sorry!

the looser side of your hair and your ends look like they are heat damaged, that is probably be why you have one side of hair that is dramatically looser than the other. i would recommend that you stop straightening or using heat. and if you continue to use heat you have to use a heat protectant.

jessicurl wdt is fantastic as a leave in. its a great dt too. but i love it even more as a leave in. its leave my hair very moisturized. i love elucence mb conditioner too. i use that as a co wash and a leave in. the protein in it would help your hair gain strength that it needs if youre going back and forth from straight to curly. plus its heavy enough so that i dont get frizz. i like giovanni conditioners (smooth as silk and 50/50) as a co wash, but their leave in was way too light for me.
as for laying down edges, what works for me is wetting a boad bristle brush and just smoothing them down. sometimes i'll add gel, jessicurl wdt, and ive even used blended beauty styling butter and then done the wet brush thing.
have you tried the rake and shake or shingling method to apply products yet?

thanks subbrock...The best way for me to address this is in # format...LOL...i'ma loser, I know.
1. I thought that side was looser because it was a different Texture. I can kinda see that looking down familial lines... so I was like ok.Thanks for dividing it right down the middle..(maybe I am wrong).. But I do use heat protectant in my hair when I straighten it.When I do straighten it,I use it once a week and thats it. So, is there a way for me to find out if thats the cause or if my head is just uncooperative? The ends(at least in the front are still relaxed and I get them trimmed every 6-8 weeks too. I did the gradual grow out thing while growing my hair longer too, so thats why they are straight. When my hair was permed, you didnt even know I had curly hair...
Anywho... I think I am going to rock my curlies...and lack there of on the left side... for a little while and see what that does for hair health.
2. my hair is actually ultra thick and laughs at water on my edges.... and pretty much anything I put on them... I will try the BB stuff and Jessicurl... I am so excited. I want to go buy it tonight and try!!!!
3. No, I just watched the video(at work....shhh dont tell) about rake and shake so I am going to try that tonight. Whats shingling?
4. so should I try jessicurl or elucence mb conditioner for leave in first? and where do I buy these

1. i think if i were going to figure out if it were truly heat damage or not, i would stop using heat for a month. by that time you should have around 1/2 inch of new growth. if the texture of the new growth is tighter than the loose parts, then you can tell that its the heat thats caused the loosening. if you cant tell where the new growth is, then maybe its just the way your hair grows. there might be a quicker way to figure out if its damaged or not, i just dont know what it is!
2. if you dont mind using a non CG product, then redken rough paste is excellent for keeping edges in place. a little bit goes a looong way.
3. shingling is taking sections of hair and smoothing product on. miss jessies website has a tutorial... http://missjessies.com/shingling101.htm
you dont have to do it exactly the way they did but the key is to section your detangled hair and smooth product on from root to tip.
4. hmm i dont know which one you should try first. theyre both great. as a matter of fact, i use them together. you can get them both from this sites curlmart.

Thanks... I am doing a version of shingling...yes... Thanks for the help... Guess I'll be curly for a month... This should be interesting... What can I do to make sure my hair doesnt break off, in the meantime...
Should I trim before I start this month of curly hair or after... does it even matter? Anyway, thanks and I will keep you posted.

if your hair needs a trim then definitely get one. but if your ends arent split or ragged then you probably are fine without it.
