i just moved here for college and im living in the upper east side of manhattan...i doubt there are any ethnic salons around here for black hair let alone natural black hair. where can i go ? places that arent too far away would be great. : )

also can i buy all these products ppl are talking about on here from any stores in new york city? i havent tried any because they are too ****ing expensive but if i could get them without the excessive shipping charges....that would be great.

I'm not sure about salons, so can't help you there. But I regularly go into NY to buy products at Ricky's (www.rickysnyc.com) that I can't find at usual drugstores or beauty supply stores; things like Kinky-Curly and the like.

Almost everything you read about on these boards you can get on the ground somewhere in the 5 boroughs, if not at Ricky's as suggested. Sadly, I'm still tempted to have the Karen's Body Beautiful stuff I want to try shipped just because getting to BK from the northern tip of Manhattan via subway is a LONG trip.

We are home base for multiple curly and natural hair salons. Ouidad, Devachan, and other curly salons are in Manhattan. The ones that specialize in natural black hair tend to be located in Brooklyn. I've yet to visit any though, so I can't give you a recommendation. It's been several years, but the salon I used to visit was just a typical black hair salon in Harlem where I got a blowout & trim.

I buy everything from Rickys. Its my favorite store . I also go to Wholes Foods & Carol's Daughter (Harlem). Karens Body Beautiful would be easy for you to get to because its not to far into Brooklyn (Clinton Hill). Even though I dont use her stuff (some products arent cg), we also have Miss Jessies Salon. I believe that the salon is back open.
