Default Curl Activator and Gel That Won't Dry Out Hair

Does anyone know of a good gel and curl activator that won't dry out my hair??

I've already tried Care Free Curl and Fantacia IC Gel. After awhile they both dried out my hair.

Long Aid Curl Activator is good for moisture. I think a few other ladies here like it too.

Long Aid is good...but my absolute FAVORITE is smooth and shine.

Slightly offtopic...are u using a leave in under your gel? I find i get better moisture retention if I use a leave in under the CAG. Also, if you are in a dry climate (which most places are in the winter) then no matter what kind of CAG you use, it will leave your hair dry because of the glycerine.

Just a thought.

Long Aid Curl Activator gel gets my vote, moisturizing and will not dry your hair.

This has been my experience so far so I've been using Aloe Vera gel.

Nappy Curly Crown u ain't never lied.. I LOVE Smooth & Shine CAG -for normal hair (the one for extra dry hair has wheat protein)

Right now, i'm not using anything other then my homemade curl cream(FOTE, Condish, & Castor). Which leaves my hair feeling great, frizz free, and curly. My PJism is kicking in and i'm just looking for other options. Plus sometimes you just need a good gel to "hold down" your hair depending on how you're wearing it that day, and curl cream just doesn't cut it.

I too love long aid but can't use it in the winter because of the high glycerin content.

I also love love love aloe vera gel. I also use Elasta QP Feels Like Silk and Garnier Fructis Curl Shaping Spray Gel. But I know exactly what you mean by a good gel to hold it down. I have found some good alcohol free gels at the dollar store and I also use the commercial aloe vera gel that is sold for sunburns when I need something good and thick to make this suiff lay down.

Lately nothing was working on my edges so I started using a bit of honey (over everything else) and it definitely did the trick but I found I had to be really careful with honey on dry hair (can create a sticky mess). I am gonna try to make a gel with fruit pectin, FOTE, glycern and/or grapeseed oil, and some honey. I love the aloe vera gels but I am in search of some way to make it thicker. Saw some videos with xanthum gum as a thickener and I have heard some suggestions to use unflavored gelatin....

try mixing the ic fantasia with melted shea butter and coconut oil (a few tb) and whipping it by hand. the oil may keep it from crunching. i loooooove this mix. great for curly leave out styles and slicking back a puff/pony

Elasta QP Feels like Silk is my all time FAVORITE gel!!!! I use it on top of blended beauty butter me up for awesome hair days!!!

Akilamonique...try this gel...it works well also and will define your hair like WHOA! It is very moisturizing (one lady on another board uses it as a leave in) and mixes well with other products.

I think I will give this a try, maybe over my homemade curl cream if it won't dry out my hair.

What kind of leave in are you using under the the CAG? I'm in need of a new one!

I've used a lot of leave ins that all give good results depending on what your moisture levels are. Also...I ALWAYS use a leave in...no matter how "moisturizing" the styler is, I still use a leave in. It's a MUST!

Good Leave ins

1. Shea Moisture Shea Butter Leave in...this is my HG leave in. I usually take 1/2 of a bottle, mix with a little distilled water and rice bran oil to increase the slip. This stuff is AMAZING I tell you. If you are having problems with dryness, then this is the leave in for you!!!

2. Blended Cutie Butter me up

3. Paul Mitchell the conditioner....i use this in the summer...its a nice lighter leave in, but still works well. Lately, I've been mixing it with the Blended Beauty Butter me not and getting GREAT results.

4. Elucence Moisture Balancing Conditioner (mixed with a little distilled water and oil)

As you can see, my hair LOVES creamy leave ins. I rarely do a watery leave in. My hair is usually on the dryer side, so the creamy leave ins work wonders on my hair.

5.

I've tried the first one and liked it, but didn't love it. I guess because I always had a hard time getting it out of the bottle! I hear a lot of people raving about this Leave in, maybe I should give it another try.

I'm currently using the Elucence MB mixed with water. What oil do you suggest using with it?

I'm a huge fan of rice bran oil...it absorbs really quickly and isn't "greasy" like most oils.

Other oils I've tried and liked (mixed with leave ins)

castor oil (this is a MUST in the winter time)
olive oil
grapeseed oil
coconut oil
safflower oil
soybean oil

I usually mix varying amounts of all of these oils and add to leave ins and mixes. If you would rather buy an already mixed oil blend, I HIGHLY recommend Africa's Best Herbal oil. I get it a Wal-mart for $2 and it is the ish for real!!!

Thank you again, ma'am!

I'm going to start off using Africa's Best Herbal oil and then progress to mixing my own oils. I can't wait to see the results!

I used to LOVE Long aid (blue label) and Smooth n Shine. When I lived in the midwest (climate) it was a perfect match for my hair.
