Bentonite Clay. How often can I use?

I tried this for the first time today and I think my hair likes it! However, I only did in sections not the whole thing. I want to try it again tommorow. I have a couple of questions.

1. How often can I use it. I just did the treatment tonight and I want to do again tommorow so that I can do the whole head. Does any one use once a week?

2. Can I sleep in like a conditioning treatment. I loved the way my hair looked right after rinsing it out. I thought it might be nice to do this the night before my wash and go's and then I could rinse out in the morning?

3. Is it essential to use a conditioner afterwards. Any harm if I do not?

Thanks!!!
Hi Alsaxon..

I used Bentonite clay for the first time yesterday too. I got my tips on using bentonite clay from Nikki (curlynikki.com). She is great. Ck out her blog.

You can use Bentonite Clay once a week, or once every 2 weeks. Since you did yours yesterday...I wouldn't do it again until next wk..but that's just my opinion.

Yes, you can sleep in a conditioning treatment. JUST NOT THE BENTONITE CLAY itself. You're not to let it dry on your hair. Let it sit for about 20 mins on your hair...then rinse out and condition w/a moisturizing conditioner.

& Yes, it's essential to use a conditioner afterwards because if you don't, your hair will feel weird. Plus, your hair needs moisture, etc since the bentonite clay has since removed any toxins and such from your hair.

Hope I've helped.

Girl,

That's the reason why I'm trying the clay because of Curly Nikki. I love her blog.

Thanks for answering my questions.

Okay so you tried yesterday for the first time did you like and why?

I co-washed w/Aubrey Organics Honey Suckle Rose condish about 2 times..and it made the weird feeling go away totally. I did a T-n-C and my hair turned out great. Oh, and I also used SheaMoisture Leave-in too after I co-washed.

I liked the clay because it relieved my hair of the crap that was in it. My hair has been feeling icky all week. I guess bcz I've been trying new stuff. lol

I was a little afraid at first too but it seemed to moisturize and detangle my hair and stretch the curl a little. It really felt like a spa treatment!

I'm gonna take your advice and wait a week before trying again. I guess I will try my aubreys jojoba and aloe condish
Once a week is enuf. You don't want to super strip your hair or scalp. DOn't leave it in overnight. I did leave one clay treatment on abour an hour due to having to cook dinner on the fly, lol, without ill effect to hair, but I am too afraid to ever have that happen again, lol. My hair felt great after rinsing out the clay and before I put in any conditioner.

I follow my bentonite clay with AO Honeysuckle Rose. Alba Botanica Leave-in and AOMM Gel. Great results for me. I'm shooting for doing the clay once a month or two months depending on how often I henna. I don't do too much to my hair, so I'm mostly doing it to get rid of toxins/pollution from outdoors and heavy butters.

thanks! I've been eyeing the alba leave in. How is it as far as moisture?

The true test for me will be if it does great in the summer. But, so far, it's in rotation with Giovanni Direct and just using AO WC conditioner as a leave-in.

Great advice! Never knew about not putting glycerin on dry hair. hmmm. My hair prefers to be moisturized when wet as well. Right now what seems to be working for me is a leave in like aubrey organics sea buckthorn which works but like you I need to put something on top that holds in the moisture like Aveda humectant pomade. I am trying to use up the sea buckthorn as it smells disgusting!

I did twists on dry hair and used a butter that had been blended with glycerin. Next day my hair was extra extra cripsy. I actually heard it crackling and sounding like a random California wildfire was starting on my head as my hands went to unravel the twists. Took extra drenching in shower and baggy overnight to get my hair to feel and act correctly. Guess I did that because I loved how that butter blend worked on wet hair and forgot about how humectants can suck moisture from your hair shaft when they can't get it from environment.

I'm still looking for a leave in product that can work without gel, oil or pomade, but I think I'll eventually have to accept my hair is one that simply must have that extra something on top. What I do love about Bentonite clay is the clean slate, it seems to make every product I apply after the clay treatment work so much better and for a longer time. Even better feel than clarifying poos because the clay left my hair feeling moisturized for some reason. I barely need to use a conditioner afterwards.
