How long was your natural hair after 2.5 years?

Thats how long I plan to transition, I don't have that long to go and Im def. not getting the urge to big chop. My hair now is a pretty good length but not as long as I would like, hence the long transition.
I'm hoping for shoulder length shrunken hair and apl to grazing bsl when straight. I haven't trimmed my hair in over a year and so far so good. Is that a reasonable goal for kinky/course hair?

How often do you trim your hair and whats the current length?

How tall are you?

It's reasonable to expect 4-6 inches a year. Could be more, could be less because it's not only dependent on the health of your hair (breakage), but also the health of your body (growth).

Edited to add:

At 2.5 years, my hair was shoulder length, unstretched. It would have been longer but I am extremely scissor happy. I cut my hair every time I see a pair of scissors, lol. I'm 5'2" tall, but I'm not sure that really makes a difference. I have an average neck length and average torso (as opposed to long or short).
Nappy is not an 'N' word.

i only transitioned for like 4 months (i didn't even know i was doing it), but in dec of 09 it will be 3 years since i cut the perm out. im right around that 2.5 year mark, give or take a few weeks. straight, the back is like 1/2 inch from bsl. shrunken, its just about shoulder length. my sides are 4bish, different than the rest of my head, and the growth there is slower then the rest of my hair, so they're only at shoulder length stretched.
I've been growing my hair since I was 13 (I'm 35 now) and it's still only shoulder length! (bra strap length when stretched) I get it trimmed about twice a year, with only the minimum length needed taken off. I've only recently gone CG though, so I'm hoping it will allow my hair to break less and therefore get longer. I've always wanted waist length hair!

I'm nowhere near the 2.5 year mark, but... I have figured out that my hair grows about 4 inches a year. Tomorrow makes 1 year since my big chop, and at that time I had about 4-5 inches of hair (post-chop, that is). Now I have between 8-10 inches of hair stretched. This summer I plan to wear braided and cornrowed styles, not to just be protective, but because my hair is so thick and dense, it actually feels like I have a wool hat on when the DC heat and humidity rises. Doing that may encourage more growth since I have worn it out ever since the big chop. If it grows about 4 inches a year, then by my calculation, I should have about 14-17.5 inches if I keep taking care of it diligently. I'm not a mathematical genius but, oh well..lol
I guess I'll have to get back to you in a year and a half to really know.
hmm...well. i didnt keep track but i have been relaxer free for about 8 years. i was in 6th grade i think when i stopped. something like that. i had so much damage from salon relaxers. i got a mini chop but i didnt actually cut all the hair off. i started pressing my hair manually because i liked the way it looked. so because i didnt bc at all, over the years my hair was breaking off while it grew. because of that it almost seems like i have had the same hair length for a good few years lol even though my cousin always told me it was growing. i dont remember when the breakage stopped but i started trimming my hair sporadically. i stopped pressing my hair regularly 3 years ago. now i hardly ever straighten it at all. of course i feel like my hair should be longer after 8 ****ing years!! but i guess that was my fault for not wanting super short hair. anyhow my hair has slightly different textures but thats just how a lot of peoples hair is. you would have to know about hair typing to tell though. my mom said it all looks the same wild mess to her lol my hair sheds when i detangle in the shower but im 99.9% sure i have no breakage because when i take care of my hair correctly (moisturize daily, run my fingers through sections daily to avoid tangles when i cowash, etc. ) i get such a tiny amount in the comb when i do detangle.

but i definitely recommend chopping your hair off at some point. if you dont it gets very confusing well for me it was anyway!! plus i fee like my hair has stunted growth somehow because of it. idk ive just become satisfied with my hair and accepted that my hair doesnt grow as quickly as some other peoples. its a good length now but im never cutting it outside of my trims.

question what is the bsl, asl, etc. business folks keep talking about??

CoaCoaBean, go to the top of the page where it says Home, and then click on it. After that, click on FAQs, and scroll down toward the bottom of the page. There are a lot of abbreviations there. Bsl is bra strap length. Like where your hair reaches when either stretched or even unstretched. APL is arm pit length. Where the hair reaches there stretched or unstretched. Not all of the abbreviated terms often used on here are there though. But I'm sure if you ask, some nice person would be happy to tell you.
Thanks Stephanie! You are thorough, and I'm slow...LOL
Stephanie, my last relaxer was Nov 30, 2006 so I think I am at about 2.5 years. I am full BSL right now.

I was shoulder length when I did the BC and went up to nape length. I think you can trim every few months until your hair is completely natural. There are pros and cons to waiting 2.5 years. One pro is that you don't lose any length. One con is that by the time you cut your hair you will miss out on the milestones (first puff, products that worked vs didn't work, etc), but I know that as long as it works for you then do it.

Relaxer free for almost 5 years!

Stephanie198907, I think a 2.5 year is totally within reach for your kinky coarse hair. I have fine to medium strand hair but its really dense. I didnt really become very scissor happy until the last 6 months of my transition. I snipped whenever I saw a single strand not or a spilt end, but I did full on trims twice a year. When I bc'd my hair was an 1in past apl stretched, but unstretched it was neck length (yeah I have super shrinkage). My height is about in between 5'8 and 5'9.

What do hair typing, Santa, the bogey man, and the great pumpkin all have in common? My utter and complete disbelief in them of course.

After one year and half I'm about two inches past shoulder length. I think I will be APL by Christmas whic is two years. I figure with trims and everything you should be close to or at bra strap length by then.

and to everyone:
from what I've seen most women, regardless of texture/feel, seem to make it to, or close to, bsl around 2.5 to 3 years. Hopefully if I can keep up with this no trimming than I will be at bsl come 2.5 years and full bsl by year 3.
thanks ladies

I'm two years natural and my hair is 2-3 inches shrunken, 9-10 inches stretched (the top of my hair is longer than the back). My last cut was January 2009; I'll trim again in July, but I'm going for growth. I'll probably get another 1-1.5 inches shrunken by the end of the year, but it'll be 12-14 inches stretched (I kinda really love the disparity. It's so much fun to me!). I'm wearing more protective styles during the summer to encourage growth; I normally do a wash n go, so the change may help. I'm 5'4".
i'm at 2.5 years since cutting my locs off completely!! my hair shrinks ALOT. if i stretch it in the back it's a little past my shoulders. i would say it's probably 10 inches all around give or take again stretched but i haven't been so loving so i've probably lost a lot along the way. i've had 3 really major trims and i'll snip raggedy ends in a minute.

i'm trying to take better care so i can retain more hair length. plus i bought chicoro's book grow it and plan to get some tips from there. i guess i should have about 10-15 inches of hair so i'm on the low end.

Stephanie198907 i haven't followed all your threads/posts but having been natural almost 10 years (almost 6 yrs in the middle i had locs) i would highly recommend cutting your hair and just dealing with your natural hair. there's a transition when you first go "all natural" so better to do that sooner rather than later then your hair will really flourish. trying to hold on to relaxed ends because you don't want your hair to shrink robs you of the chance to really get to know your hair texture and observe how it behaves. so just my 2 cents. don't hold out on cutting because of shrinkage. besides, no two heads are the same your hair might not shrink as much or it might but you might like it. plus with styles and/or products you will likely get your hair to its happy place. just my 2 cents....
