what should i do with my fro?!?

hi, i have what some people call a "jew fro" lol
but im thinkin its the 4b hair type. im pretty new to this hair thing and i was wondering what i should do with it. usually i just get out of the shower, shake it,and go but i want to try something new. any suggestions?!?
1st congratulations on looking to try new things. And if you do have 4b hair there's really not enough that you can do for your curls as they are very fragile and naturally dryer. So yes you may have noticed your hair is high mainentanence or doesn't like to grow but on the flip side, with the right care your hair type is the most versatile out there and will reward you with some awesome styles.

2nd It's important to type you right. You may indeed have 4b hair but sometimes I find people only think they have 4b hair becuase their hair forms an afro when really there are people with 3b curls who can have an afro if they let their hair air dry or brush it when dry without product amd it's short. It's hard to tell from your small avatar so it's possible. A good way to tell is to wash your hair and rinse with cold water. Step out of the shower and look in the mirror right away. Can you see a curl pattern? If yes, this usually means you are not Cnapp and the curls you see wet are curls you can have when hair is dry if you apply the right product the right way. There are plenty of threads here about defining curls so I won't go into detail about that. If there is no visible curl clumping, then it's possible your hair is 4b.

3rd If it turns out your hair is type 4 then super congrats becuase you have the most versatile hair type out there. I'm not really sure what you are willing to try but the sky is the limit when it comes to kinky hair. You can let it be the awesome undefined fro that it is, pick it out even bigger and let it grow. If you have small curls you can define them with product for a wash and go. You can cut it short, cut designs into your curls. You can do a fro hawk (like a mohawk but with afro hair). You can dye it a crazy color. Then there is the unlimited amount of protective styles you can do like braids, cornrows, twists, flat twists, palm coils, bantu knots that are made for your hair type and just look awesome and unlike looser curls yours won't need rubber bands to keep the braids together. Then you can let these styles out and rock the resulting texture from them. Then you have the perfect texture for locs/dreads, those with straighter hair have to get afro perms to achieve the right texture for dreads. Obviously dreads are the most permenant of the above styles so it's something you should think about first.

My Fotki
the term "jew fro" might be offensive to people, but from the picture I can interpret that you mean your hair is curly and thick and fluffy.

Grab some of those 1/2-1inch wide elastic head bands WITHOUT the metal thing on it from dollar store, walgreens...target??. Put one around your fro when its wet and slide it as far back as it will go or as far back as you like. Shake, and bam you will have a new look. You can use 1 or 2 depending on if you want a color variation like black and white, red and white...etc...

hope that helped.
3c + 4a/b = ME!

just started CG and I'm liking it so far.
My son wears a fro, twistout, wash n go or pulls it back with a headband, like these:

Haha at your screen name. Fros are sexy

But yea. When it come to hair type, ethnicity takes a back seat. There are certain things most folks with curly texture hair do (check out th CG routine on this site, fyi), and then you modify to fit your hair's needs.

For example. You like shaking and going? Work in conditioner on your strands before you shake and go. All curls love conditioner, and the link Suburbanbushbabe posted is from a curlyhead who uses conditioner only to manage and style her hair.

People will be able to advise you, if you give them more detail about how you care for your hair on a day to day basis. Also suburbanbushbabe gives sound advice

Your routine sounds pretty carefree and simple, are you bored of that?

From your avi you look like you have curls that are dry or brushed out a bit, any better pics of your hair when it's just washed?

As to hair styles - Most guys with your hair seem to wear it exactly as you do - or pick it out to make it bigger or wear headbands as suggested above. you can probably pull it back too into a puff. You could probably do a curly fro too.

here's a link to the youtube vid for that style:

anyhoo, have you tried defining your curls with gel or conditioner. You could always do twist outs, coil outs, bantu outs, the only problem with those styles is that it takes some time to set. If you want to define your curls more and just wear it out than ic fantasia is a good gel to use. rake it through your curls with your fingers or use a denman (sally's) and brush the gel through your hair to clump your curls together.
I googled jew fro styles and nothing came up...sorry. Youtube has a lot of hair videos if you want to learn how to use gel to define and clump your curls.

This is an interesting thread...I've always wondered why my hair looks so different wet than it does dry...

I usually get the sides of my hair cut short like a #3 or something, let some up at the top, sometimes I will let them shape into a faux hawk-y type thing, or I can keep it normal. It is short enough to make it curl at least once (some of my curls are kinda loose, I'm a 3b) and use Mousse and it works out well. As soon as you get out of the shower, make sure you wet your hair with cold water as it will help it de-frizz, I usually let my hair very damp so that my curls are in big chunks and I use a curling mousse, I let it air dry or I use a hairdryer ON THE COOL BLAST SETTING (if it has one) and not TOO MUCH cuz it will frizz you! my curls get big and shiny and defined when dry... try that!! OR!!

I get some straitening gel and dry my hair completely (with the process mentioned above) and use a flat iron to straighten it (I have a small 1/4 inch one) and my hair is usually all over the place! BUT get some pomade or wax and run it through your hair, you can spike it up! or shape it in any other way of form you want!

GOOD LUCK TO YOU MAN!

JEW FROS CAN BE AWESOME lol
